Now I'm of the opinion that who or what you do is your business. But I have to wonder, how many people will "call in gay" to work.

SAN FRANCISCO — Some same-sex marriage supporters are urging people to "call in gay" Wednesday to show how much the country relies on gays and lesbians, but others question whether it's wise to encourage skipping work given the nation's economic distress.

Organizers of "Day Without a Gay" — scheduled to coincide with International Human Rights Day and modeled after similar work stoppages by Latino immigrants — also are encouraging people to perform volunteer work and refrain from spending money.

Sean Hetherington, a West Hollywood comedian and personal trainer, dreamed up the idea with his boyfriend, Aaron Hartzler, after reading online that a few angry gay-rights activists were calling for a daylong strike to protest California voters' passage last month of Proposition 8, which reversed this year's state Supreme Court decision allowing gay marriage.

The couple thought it would be more effective and less divisive if people were asked to perform community service instead of staying home with their wallets shut. Dozens of nonprofit agencies, from the National Women's Law Center in Washington to a Methodist church in Fresno collecting food for the homeless, have posted opportunities for volunteers on the couple's Web site.

I said elsewhere that I'm calling in bald.

"Sorry, I can't come into work today. I've come down with a terrible case of gay."

IDK.. I like the idea. Although individual companies may not see in great numbers a massive effect, the number crunchers that will eventually gauge the overall effect may bring some much needed light to the issues our "gays" want resolved.

It implies the same connotations of being ill, sentiments that I thought the homosexual community was trying fervently to dispel?

It doesn't make sense.

Sorry to post again so soon, but Trist I don't really think that's accurate.

I believe they're more or less trying to prove the NUMBER of gay in our everyday lives, how important a piece of society they are. To bring light to the fact that we depend on them the same as every Jack or Jill in our society yet when it comes to their personal lives they've been denied their rights. But they can still process our invoices, give us over the phone tech help, serves us our coffee, but damn them if they think they can marry whom they want lol.

Not to make this, them, or their struggle sound trivial, but does anyone remember the SHEER ECONOMICAL IMPACT from the boycott/walkout for a day of the Latino immigrants a couple years back?

Me neither.

Terrible..

Listen, there probably won't be a HUGE impact... I'm not doubting that, like I said though in my first post, WHEN the numbers are crunched.. it will be published.. which will get read.. AND I'm willing to bet someone will likely post it here on QCDN.

None-the-less it will get some attention.. who knows.. it COULD get enough attention.

I'll remain skeptical of any real impact, even locally to the greater SanFran area.

What's more, is it shows a great amount of forethought on the part of the organizers to try and get a day-long strike going during already tough economic times.

Way to think there, organizers.

Saw this elsewhere. Might've been Facebook. Huuuuge shitstorm ensued. What confuses me is that members of the homosexual community want equal rights, which is great, but then single themselves out and draw some attention to themselves that I think most would consider unnecessary. For some reason, Howard Dean comes to mind.

Byahhhh!

"Sorry, I can't come into work today. I've come down with a terrible case of gay."

"I've come down with a terrible case of gay. It must've been something I ate."

I very briefly considered this, but immediately rejected it on the grounds that my department is gay-friendly (the ones who aren't tend to keep their mouths shut these days) and I don't really need to teach them anything.

Besides, it's an old joke. "If homosexuality is an illness, I'm calling in 'gay' to work."

"I'm blonde, I can't come in today"

-That's me protesting all of those retarded jokes.

"I wont be coming in today"
"Why?"
"Im military"

Running joke about me around the office. Its my way of protesting.. something..

On topic: All I have to say is. "You're gay, Congrats, Big whoop, Can I go do my job now?"

I think comparing it to something like "I can't come in today, I'm male(or female)".

I'm sure if every man(or woman) refused to work for a day it would prove absolutly nothing, but cause a huge shitstorm.

That was the point. 1 day is not going to change peoples minds or attitudes.

Just like every time the gas prices go up, you get that damn chain email telling you to reserve off <insert random date here> to not buy gas. THAT WILL SHOW THE GAS COMPANIES!

I'm gay and at work... the SHEER ECONOMICAL IMPACTon my bank account would be seen and heard.

I can't afford not to get paid.

While, yes I do support it, I personally can't support doing it.

But whatever. QUEER POWER MY BROTHAS!

There you have it. The impact for most of them would be in the opposite direction.

I'm surely not saying to not fight for your rights as people, or as gay people. That's cool and I'm all for it. Just...gotta go about it the right way. This sure isn't the right way to get any kind of point across.

I'm confused.. the lockout for the NHL got a massive response... I won't even go into great detail about that, lets just say this Hockey Raised Canuck chicky hasn't watched a game SINCE the lockout.

Why couldn't this work?

How many ways, for how long have they been trying to get their "Point" across.. and yet here they are still fighting.. so what gives? I say try any god damn way you want, if a massive volume of the gay population goes with it and boycotts the day and all it does is leave more room in their pocket books, another effort lost.

C'mon.. if it doesn't effect everyone overall, if no one is going to notice, if it won't have a negative or positive effect..........why care?

amirite??

Missing the season likely didn't hurt any of the members of the NHL, since they're athletes, and thus, make large amount of cash - especially so since they're under contract. Missing a day of work would kill someone who is in the unfortunate position of living paycheck to paycheck, or can't afford to miss a day because they'll be canned otherwise.

If any of the hockey players seriously lived one huge paycheck to next huge paycheck and the strike resulted in a life changing impact, they need to prioritize their spending methods.
