So why wasn't my question answered? Why are these magically treated differently than other means of private communications? We've had screenshots of tells, IMs, and even E-Mails that have gotten away without mod intervention. You said it was your decision to yank the message from the Dejavu thread, Miros, but what caused that decision? Was it at the complaints of any amount of person(s,) or just mod discretion? It's pretty obvious that Audino didn't care either way, or he would've removed it sometime around his first post of the thread.

If it was the former, than alls fine and dandy so long as you allow people to request that other conversations meant to be private be removed from topics and posts as well. If it was the latter, why hasn't the same discretion been extended towards the same other conversations? Troglodytes that don't understand the concept that all private exchanges are meant to be private and should be treated equally need not post here.

This isn't me "taking on the mods," it's me wondering why theres a lack of consistency. Surely you wouldn't like police or military personnel enforcing their own judgment/rules as a normal practice.

People have expressed the fact that they would not like to have private messages be shown on the site. I have gotten numerous PMs and actually /tells in game where people have thanked me for my stance on this.

My disdain with posting private messages came a while ago when people were just completely taking frustrations out on infractions and whatnot. Infractions are sent through PM, and in I'd rather the infraction stick to just the user.

Tells and reputations are not something I consider a means of receiving infractions. That's my main reason for not wanting private messages to be shown. Other people believe it for other reasons, but ultimately they agree with me that private messages should not be shown.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I have enough respect for the members to not put in a hack and read all their PMs, or even add myself or anybody else to whatever private forum they want to see...so I ask that the same courtesy be handed back to me when I ask for something this small.

There are people on both sides of the fence though, in regards to anything you say one on one, private or public, should or shouldn't be assumed to be protected. A PM, an IM, a Tell, or an E-mail are all the same thing in my opinion, and should be treated as such. How they're treated is of little concern, as long as they're the same between them all. There is absolutely no reason one should be held as "more secret" than the other. If they weren't meant to be directed at a single person, they'd be Threads/posts, Chat Room messages, or public chat channel messages in games.

IMs and e-mails I can understand. I don't remember seeing many posts with those in them. I do not clump /tells from XI in with IMs.

And why not? They certainly aren't available for the public to read to begin with.

Gonna have to agree with Skaw on that here. Normally onlt the person whe sent or recieved the tell can read it. All that has to be done for other to see it is to take a pic of it and post it, like for any other form of private communication. If the PMs from this site are not to be posted, I would expect the same thing to be done regarding the /tells in FFXI.

Thing is the people using the boards have rights here and so the higher ups can do what they want but like they said. They are nice enough to not pry into our personal areas. As for screenshots that's the intellectual rights of SE's which QCDN mods have no jurisdiction over. It would be like complaining about posting a pic of qcdn on FFXI if the function was available the GM's wouldn't give a damn unless it was inappropriate.

We're not talking about a screenshot of a video game character here, but a recorded log of a private conversation.

it's still is theirs though..this is the company that would sue you for as much as possible if you took one small icon or anything of theirs if they could legitimately do so

I dont think private conversation screenshots should be allowed in public view here either, people say things in private they may not want to be publically known. Information can be a deadly weapon at times.

It's no more different than an E-Mail, IM, or Chat session. The same exact thing message board PMs are.

All I'm saying is that if one method of private communication is protected, all private communications should be. If one isn't, than all others should be fair game to be made public.

Keep it up folks. This is what I need to hear and see. Let the discussion go on, if you are for them or against them speak up please. :)

I don't think PMs or any of the other stuff need "protection"

Once you message someone, I think its fair game if the other person wants to publicize anything you say. You should be responsible for what you say at all times, private or public.

Personally, I have no opinion either way. I just want consistency in how private matters are handled across all interactions.

Ditto. I believe if one is not allowed to be posted, all other must as well. If one is allowed, then I believe all the other should be as well.

personally i think as long as you have permission from both parties the pm was sent to, it doesn't matter since you have their approval(unlike in deja's flame). That was the part of it that made it downfall so quick imo

Well, the way I look at it is this way:

1) You can call a GM about harassment if someone were to begin shouting your PM details from QCDN ingame. Why not be able to ask QCDN Moderators/Administrators to remove private information sent from FFXI?

2) Both are forms of information given in confidence. You don't sign a waiver of liability upon sending a PM stating "by the way, this may be used in a public forum so I can (attempt to) make a fool out of you"; and if the user on the other end of the /tells specifies as such, you should be wise enough to terminate all conversation from that point onward.

You either forbid all posts containing privately sent information or you forbid none.

I agree with Sharpe. Consistency is what needs to occur in these instances; by default, if one form of a private message is prohibited, so should any other types.

This is also a great point to make. If both users grant their consent to a PM being shown, then by all means, it's an exception.

i.e. Reya and Raesvelg's "Bed-Breaking" /tells.

Information can be a deadly weapon at times.
Above all else, this statement alone needs to be taken into deep consideration concerning this matter. Information, used as a weapon, is deplorable. QCDN isn't a bloody battlefield where 1's and 0's are the ammunition.

While I see why some people agree with the ability to take screen shots of /tells, /pchat, /lschat (since screen shots are used to display /tells which is the proof behind flames), if SE had wanted us to take screen shots of conversations, wouldn't they have allowed every user to capture it?

As far as I know, a third party program must be used to record this information. That being said, I suppose no conversation is held sacred. Any /tell I send to someone, as private as it may be, can been be ss'd without my knowledge or permission, which I always find to be very invasive.

It is the person's own private message. IMO, they have the right to post it being it is "theirs"
