While I prefer the mask since it's part of his original design, I can see your point. Except those who grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series, most people who haven't read the comics will probably only know Bane from there. And the less that reminds people of that thing the better.

One thing to remember though is that, in the comics at least, Bane is a 6'8" pain-train naturally. The Venom just enhances his strength to superhuman levels. I'd think it'd be easy to bump him up to there with CGI and clever camera work, so hopefully the travel-sized version in all the shots...

I'll admit to not knowing who Tom Hardy is nor his skill as an actor, but after a quick search I've got to say that I'm not looking forward to seeing someone who stands just 5'9" playing Bane. I'm hoping there will be a stand-in for when he's pumped up, because otherwise it'll just look silly...
