(**Quick note: It was recently brought to my attention that this name was used in a vampire movie recently, and I was accused of "Ganking" my name instead of being orig. Well I assure you all, I have not seen this "Under World" movie yet, not do I care to, but my name was my old DoomII Frag teams name in Tournies. Just to clear the air. Well heres the little story thing I wrote at work today
)
The history, of Deathdealer
The place, Bastok Market. A bustling hub of engineering and craftsmanship. The bleak landscape surrounding the city on all sides, the result of the Galka and Hume drive to the top of the world with their machines and technology. The land has been strip-minded to the point that almost no vegetation can grow. But the people of the city have little time to stop and admire the world around them. They are too busy to notice and bask in the sunlight that shines over them in the early morning. This is partly due to the fact that by sunrise, most people are in the mines or tucked deep in the smithing guilds. Toiling away making new and more rare items for sale and distribution to the farthest reaches of Windhurst and Jeuno. Infact, there is not an army in the world that cannot attribute their arms and weapons to anything other than the crafters in Bastok. Simply, without them, the peaceful people may have never stood a chance in the Great War.
The price they paid? The serene beauty that nations like Windhurst and San ‘doria cherish so much. But you will find very few Bastokians losing sleep over that point. Young, aspiring, adventurers instead find a humbling thought in the fact that they are the most well equipped and prepared for battle. And adventures, find this comfort in other places instead, which only fuels their desire to seek out new places and new adventures, but still come back to lay their head upon the same resting place that they have called home since they can remember.
Which brings us to one young “would-be” warrior, by the name of David Minton. Who, after the many years if training under Xavier Thornton, his late-fathers best friend, shed the one tie that he had to his former family and life, and instead took up his sword and marched on, not knowing, or caring, what was ahead. The loss of his last remaining family member, his father, was not as harsh on him as it would have been to others. For his father was in failing health for almost 2 years before he left to join the Bastok High Elite, and he had been preparing himself since the news first came to pass. And as a result David found himself finally being caught up by all his life’s hardships; the passing of his mother, his brother and sister and finally now his father. It had been building deep in his gut for a number of years. Not one to lash out, David simply keep it deep inside him, never showing much emotion, either good or bad. Thus his decision was final, we would do as his Uncle had suggested, and enlist in Bastok’s Elite Corps.
The training wasn’t as hard as his uncle had made it out to be. Infact, David found it to be rather “Easy” and flew through his training with ease, not getting into trouble, but not lighting the torches of self-proclaimed fame either. During the last week of training the now aspiring warrior found himself next in line for the “HUNT”. Referred to by many in Bastok as the ultimate catch for warriors from Bastok. This was almost a right of passage for all members of the Bastok Elite at this stage in their training. However this was not something that the instructors could “Fail” or “Reject” a student on, because many of them were never able to pass the “Hunt” successfully. With the most meager of gear and just his Training Great Sword by his side, the young war went to the Camping Ground where he was to find the devious, and notorious monster that he was to “Hunt”. Upon arrival, he noticed a large pillar of stone to the top of a hill with a few smaller stones scattered around. In amongst these stones, David thought he could make out fleeting glimpses of what he could guess would have been Humes moving silently in and out of sight leaving no more than a trace dust cloud. By this time, dusk was settling in and the sun starting to set, creating a soft red glow on the already amber tinted sands. After looking around a little longer, he noticed a figure perched on a rock to the south of the giant pillar. The figure was kneeling on his left knee, shrouded in the darkness of the unsettling night, so much to the point that David almost over looked him. As his eyes focused, he noticed the figure was keeling down facing the west, with Stone hard eyes peering out into the darkness. The figure didn’t move a muscle other than his right hand. In it he played with something very small, almost like a stone, or maybe a dart. The figures clothing started to come through a little more as the sun actually started setting. David could see a warm green glow from the pants and Vest of the man on the rock. He had a short blond haircut with what looked like an insect wing stuck in it above his right ear. The boots he had on were fashioned with an engraving of another set of boots with angel wings on them. The mantle that was over his shoulder was fashioned around his neck very loose and was very road worn and slick rabbit fir and had been with him for many travels near as he could guess. After David spent almost 10 minutes watching this strange man on the rock, he started getting a funny feeling in the pit of his stomach that something was wrong. He silently and slowly reaches his right head up to grab his great sword free. Still unsure of what was wrong he noticed the man on the rock shoot his head around quick as lightning and look directly at David. Shocked, and a little taken back, David turned to look behind him to see if there was any danger. Alas! As he tuned his head he saw his target! The lizard he was sent to collect! Just then he heard the gust of wind from behind him and a blur of green out of the corner of his eye.
“No! I will not have this!” David thought to himself.
Quick as he could muster, he took off running at the monster as fast as his heavily armored legs could take him. As he got closer to the monster, he noticed the figure from the rock, sneaking up behind the monster with a dagger out, creeping towards it, and with that David Let out a ferocious rawer at the Lizard in hopes of gaining it’s attention. It worked! The beast came charging at it’s new found threat at an alarming rate. Taking his sword in both hands; he charged headlong at the attacker. With one critical strike from the gullet up through the neck, a massive blow was delivered to his nemesis and prey; all that was left now was to finish him off. Trying to stay away from the body of the creature as to still have some proof of the kill to take back, three more headshots, and the creature fell to his feet, motionless. It was then the David looked up and saw the figure from the rock standing only a few feet behind the monster, grinning. When David eyes locked onto his, the man simply smiled roughly, nodded and fled the scene at an alarming rate. By this time a few random adventures and passerby’s started to appear around him. Not one to waist time or take chances, he grabbed the monster and rolled it onto it’s back. Looking around the body trying to figure out the best way to carry it, he noticed something unusual and rare. A Lizard was wearing some sort of boot! Fashioned so, that is actually looked like lizards feet at first. Not wanting to take any chances, he quickly and secretly slides the boots off the creature and placed them in his pack. He then tossed the creature on his back and proceeded home. Catching many glimpses from others that saw the killing blow. Some in awe and excited, others angry that it was not them that had the pleasure.
Never the less, David returned to the guards with his catch in tow. The captain, shocked and astounded, ran to him and inspected the body. As he did, David noticed the captain pay close attention to the feet, and then suddenly his head dropped. And he seemed very disappointed but said nothing. As he half turned his head, he glared at David in question, but said nothing. Whilst giving the inquisitive eye to the young warrior, he ordered the guards to take the carcass to be skinned and de-tailed. The captain approached David and asked him to walk with him.
“Young man,” he began, “Do you have anything you need to tell me about? Anything that may have happened on your Hunt?”
A little un-nerved, David tugged the straps from his pack a little tighter around his shoulders as they walked, un-sure of the captain had any clues about the boots in his bag. “No Sir, not at all! Wait, there was a strange man, that seemed to be hunting the Monster as well, he wasn’t one of our men, that’s for sure.”
The captain seemed indifferent at the news. “Yes, he’s a Thief. He’s known in the area for out hunting all the Recruits for the monster when he’s around. Which is why I’m very surprised you brought home anything other than empty pockets!” The captain half turned a raised eyebrow to him. “But! You did manage to outfox him, which is why you’ve finished top in your class! Not bad for a little orphan!”
This comment had angered David a little, but he bit his tongue. He still wondered what importance the boots had that would make his captain want them so bad. By this time David had become pretty sure that’s why the instructors had the students hunt the creature, so they didn’t have to. Maybe to find these boots? He wasn’t sure. By this time, the captain had stopped and started talking to a few other brass in the area and ignored David completely. As he turned back to head back to the student Barracks, he noticed his classmates at the door and windows hooting and hollering at him like a crazed bunch of drunk Hume will at the end of the week.
“Death has been dealt to the lizard!” And “David the Death Dealer” Were among the random drunken phrases that were being shouted at him as he approached. David couldn’t help but break a smile and drop his chin to his chest. He didn’t take complements too well; they embarrassed him a little too. As his already drunk buddies were running out to congratulate him, he felt an un-easy feeling. Something needed to be done.
“Hey guys, I need to run real quick, I’ll be right back!” David said as he picked his pack back up and darted out the door.
His friend L.B. looked at him as he took off out the door. “He’s always doing that!” And began laughing out loud at the thought. While the party stilled raged on, David made a mad dash to the Auction House in the middle of Bastok Markets. After fighting his way to the least crowded window, he asked the teller, and old fatter male Hume with a beard and mustache, “I’d like to price some armor please” he forced out, now short on breath.
“Well what do ya wants! I got tons!” The man replied.
“Well they look like they are made of lizard skin, that’s all I know.” David said in an under toned voice forcing the AH keep to lean forward.
“Hmmm, lets see…“he turned and grabbed a pair of lizard greaves and set them on the counter.
“No, no, those aren’t the ones, the actually look like lizards feet a little.” David replied to the first sight of the boots.
The man gave him a squinted look, “Hmmm., you wouldn’t happen to be talking about these would ya?” The man set a pair of boots on the counter that looked almost exactly the same as the ones he found on the Hunt.
“Yes! Those are they exactly! Are they for sale?” replied David.
The old man burst with laughter at the young warrior. “My son, the Bastok Armies don’t pay you enough to afford THESE boots! You’d have to save for a long time young fella!”
With that, David reached into his bag and with a grin on his face, set the boots he had gotten on the hunt on the counter. Taken aback and almost falling out of his chair the old man’s jaw almost hit the floor. “How much are you going to give me?” David said with a devious grin on his face.
As David made his way back to the Barracks, the party was dyeing down and L.B. stepped out in front of him as he made his way to his rack. David stopped and looked at him, a little confused and then saw his friend holding out a small package in front of him.
“Here, me and some of the guys got you something as a gift for finishing top in the class.” L.B. said.
David simply looked down at the package, and began to open it amidst the chaos and the few friends who knew and were watching from their bunks. Inside his hands, he found a small beautiful dagger, fashioned of silver and wood, and on the blade it was etched with the name “Death Dealer” in scripted writing.
“One of the new ideas that the engineer Cid has been working on. Hope ya like it man.. Now,” L.B. said as he picked up the dagger by the blade, pummel facing David, “Get the hell outta here soon, and do something with yourself, we know your better than a basic grunt warrior, you better prove us right real soon. Your not a warrior, you’re a hunter, a killer, a Death Dealer.” L.B. explained to him with some laughs and smiles from his friends and L.B. They laughed about it for a good while. But David or now referred to as Death Dealer, was thinking a lot to himself now. He was rich beyond his dreams from the boots he had sold, he was top of his class, he started to realized that maybe L.B was right, he shouldn’t be a warrior, maybe he should be a hunter, and killer, …..A thief.
With this all fresh in his head, “Death Dealer” now, finished off his training and continued on down the chosen path of the War for many, many days to pass, and would always carry with him his past and his training where ever he may go. But where he ends up, he’s not even sure of…
