Thoughts on this subject?

I was in a rockin PT in the nest yesterday chaining beetles. We had just finished a pretty tough fight and were getting our rest on. Low and behold a player (name withheld to protect the stupid) ran by with a beetle on him. He called for help running in circles around our pt while the thing was popping him pretty good.

Well, I like to help, and I did. Even though our pt was in no shape to fight the beetle, I voked, and we fought and killed it. Now the thing that irks me is that he didn't even stop and help fight it. I saved this guy's ass, and he left my pt in dire straights fighting his battle to run off and wait for the next beetle to pop.

Ok, I know... Some may say, "Well, you should have let him die." At least that's what I got from his pt leader after we took the beetle from him. If his own pt leader said that, without a "thanks" or anything of the sort, why should I help?

I don't know, I like to be helpful, but that just pisses me off.

Why protect the stupid shits who do stuff like that. It really gets on my nerves when you save someone and they do not thank you.

If I were you, I would expose this moron to the board so everyone can /slap and /poke him in Jeuno. Just my 2 cents.

I also saw that I was the 3999 post on the flame board, and could not resist to be the 4000th as well. SO hahahahahaha, fuck all you noobs. <-- only in there because this is a flameboard, so why not flame people.

If I were in a resting party, I would consider the action of bringing me a beetle training. As such I would most likely let the one who brought the mob die to teach him not to run mobs into a crowd of other people and potentially getting them killed.

I don't expect a thank you anymore. I don't even know why I help much anymore. If people don't appreciate it, why help them? And even if they do, it'd be nice to know so I don't get in this "You're screwed" kind of mood. Even though I say this, I'm still going to help. It's just some kind of... thing I have.

I love helping...I usually end up being the first to die but I always help....It makes me absolutley go bonkers when people call for help and dont' stay and fight. On the rare occasion I call for help I'm standing there with 10 HP and hitting it as hard as my wussy taru ass can hit it. Never call for help and bail....Help being "My god help me fight this mob" not "Fight this mob for me." It's called the Help feature and not the "I'm a pansy-ass running away wuss" feature for a reason...

PS If you need help, like say if you've got a bad pull like a PUGIL following your ass to the Selbina zone and there's a bunch of higher levels sitting there killing trains....CALL FOR HELP! I can't do anything for you when the Pugil's name is purple and if I cure you as your run by and this Pugils starts mashing on my taru flesh and I can't mash it's back I get a little frustrated :?

Recently I was in W. Sara leveling my blm (I was level 9 with whm subbed at 4). Happened across a lil taru who had taken on more than he could chew with a crawler. I started healing him but it was evident pretty early on that I was not going to have enough mp (I had gotten agro'd earlier and used my 2hr). I told him to call for help but he thought he could do it (probably could've if i'd had enough mp for one more cure) but he died with the crawler having just a sliver of life left. Having only recently started leveling mage jobs I've realized how dangerous it can be to "help" someone.

I don't understand why some people get really sensitive about this (the person calling for help not actually joining in the fight).

If I'm nearby and someone calls for help, I help them if I can. I don't really expect them to continue the fight. There are a few reasons:
  1. If they started the fight on purpose, and are on-par with the mob they are fighting, they already EXPECTED to win. If they're calling for help, it's because they're NOT winning. Either they picked up aggro *or* they've somehow been unlucky and are losing more HP than they expected and are projecting their impending death. When this happens, most people will not call for help with 90% of their life remaining. They'll see if things don't turn around or if they can build maybe enough TP to get in a good crushing blow to re-even the odds. They call for help because they're probably just about out of HP and about to die.
  2. They did not start the fight on purpose. They picked up aggro while crossing an area with mobs substantially more powerful than they are. This is pretty common. If they were in a full party, it wouldn't be a big deal, but fighting solo, they're screwed if they don't get help. In this situation they are probably taking a beating because they don't have a mage curing them or a tank absorbing the damage. They *might* be able to help fight, but only if people jump right in at the beginning.
    [/lilst]

In general, it's my expectation that the person calling for help will be in a world of hurt and in no condition to fight. If I'm in a position where I *can* help, then I will.

It does annoy me when someone calls for help, I help them, and they don't bother to say 'thanks'.

Speaking for myself, that isn't what I am sensitive about. I find it absolutely irresponsible to bring a mob to another group, effectivly making sure that the mob will attack them if the one who brought the mob dies.

Calling for help is ok, but keep your distance so that if you do die, you don't kill a bunch of others as well.

Man, that reminds me of one time in Palborough Mines. I was following my friend who was soloing mobs as a RDM13 with my MNK14. I told him that I'd take care of links, until he'd finally level and we'd group up for a bit of duo fun.

He gets bored of little (and quick) xp off Quadavs, and decides to take on a Scorpion-type monster there, that was waiting there, next to a miner. As I see the fight taking a turn for the worst, I tell him to Call for Help... No dice... He dies.

Seeing the weakened Scorpion, the miner (a MNK of equal level) takes it on, in spite of him having low HPs. I tell him to call for help...

Miner: "/sh Help! I'm being chased by <t> at <pos>!" ...and stays engaged.

As I saw him not calling for help, I simply stepped away, to show the miner that I wasn't trying to "steal" a kill from him. I engaged in /tell mode with him, telling about the marvellous option that appears when you press the 'right' arrow key when you highlight Disengage. I tell my friend, and he didn't knew any better either.

Ay... It's sad when people don't get curious about that message that appears when someone else does call for help and neglect inquiring about it when it can save their arses (or tails for Mithras) in a later case.

Yep. Sad isn't it. I blame in on Squeenix's default macros. I think it was ctrl-2 or maybe it was ctrl-3. I don't know for sure because I over-wrote the useless macro with something else. Alas I digres.... the original macro was named "Help" and if you hit it, it says "/sh Help, I'm being chased by a <t> near <pos>!"

Now that's just great, but it doesn't actually do a *REAL* call for help (what you'd get if you hit "Ctrl-G" (give-up) or right-arrow over the word "disengage" -- the menu option a lot of people didn't even know was there.

Now when I see people who look like they might need help, I /tell them to "Hit Ctrl-G if you need help!"

Wonderful Squenix has disabled by default the use of Ctrl+G and Ctrl+T... Not sure for the second one, the "Throw" shortcut. Too many people accidentally hit them and that must have caused an overflow of GM calls. Too many "HELP ME!!! I LOST MY EASTER EGG!!!" or "WTF?!? HOW COME THE MOB'S NAME TURNED ORANGE?!?" for their liking I suppose.

Now... If only they did add in that confirmation question whenever you try selling a Rare item that's not Ex to a NPC... It would have saved me a lot of grief... :P

*reads up his quick reference charts*

... Maybe /help (or /h for short) would work. It's not the same as /helpdesk at least.

/help does work...that's how I always call for help anyway....I didn't even know of all these other Fandagled ways!

After reading this thread I feel fortunate. I have helped the high, the mid, and the low lvls. ALL were grateful. I really enjoy helping people. It makes me feel good AND it makes me , in some cases, more knowledgable about the regions and job classes. I also benefit by helping others. If a situation developes where I die I have no one but myself to blame. I volunteered.
