Heh, gotta hand it to this guy, makes a good point as far as the "sanctity" of marriage goes. If gay people can't marry for that reason, straight people shouldn't be able to divorce either, all for the sake of preserving said "sanctity".

it's definitely thought provoking. A refreshing form of protest after those code pink nuts.

tho I think it'd be hilarious if it backfired on him and it actually passed. That'd never happen but i'd love to see his face.

If it passes it'll set the funniest precedent ever.

That wouldn't work anyway since the 3 "main" religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have had "escape clauses" for divorce for a long ass time already. Good try though I suppose.
Then again now that i think of it there probably more than enough people retarded enough to not realize that.
Besides even if it does pass it would have the fun effect of making people actually think before they get married until they realize they could just become swingers once they get sick of each other.

I need to start the Church of Raes. I can be my own Archbishop. It'll be mandatory for all devout Bastokans to attend on Wednesday evenings, and tithes will be mandated at 1% of your current gil.

Valid point, but I wouldnt vote for this for the simple fact of the couples kids. Not letting two parents sever ties would cause alot of tension and hardship that could negatively affect the lives of their children.

The escape clauses would be irrelevant, since it would only be dealing with civil marriage. The difference between civil and religious marriage is the key factor that never seems to get drilled into anti-gay religious folks' heads.

I applaud his efforts for pointing out their objections have fuck-all to do with "protecting marriage" and everything to do with punishing gay people and keeping them in their place.

this is one point i actaully agree with you on halif(hard to believe i know =P)
That's one thing I've always butted heads with my dad and some of my more conservative friends on.
They say it'll destroy the American family or some shit and I'm like uhh how? It's not like legalizing gay marriage is going to wakeup a shitload of married people and cause em to go "holy shit, I'm gay"
I think alot of conservatives, sincerely believe homosexuality is a CHOICE.

I counter this with "Could you, under any circumstance, EVER see yourself having sex with another man?"
Thier response is of course "fuck no!"
Then i say "Well then obviously there something wired different isn't there?"

Yeah, I have this argument with my dad as well (he leans Democrat, but is a highly conservative Mexican) and he doesnt seem to understand the very reasons you and Halifirien bring up. The "sanctity" of marriage was destroyed a long time ago, and has been ravaged even more now (49% divorce rate says wut?) so, why is letting gay people be as miserable as us heterosexual couples such a bad thing?

I've never understood why people would think homosexuality is a choice. Let's get ignorance out of the way straight away, it requires about 20 seconds of thought. Assuming you're heterosexual, did you choose to be attracted to the opposite sex? No, you realised when you were 6 that you didn't hate Betty as much as the rest of the "Icky" girls. It progresses from there, and I'd imagine it's the same for homosexuals too - I say assume, because I wouldn't know. But logic tells you that if hetero's had no choice, homo's have no choice either.

On the topic of banning divorce, as much as it wouldn't make a difference to the amount of people wanting out of shit marriages, it would certainly increase the number of people who give marriage more thought before jumping in to it like it's a new car. Like most problems, it's solved by looking at the causes, not the results. Divorce won't realistically be banned, but it might force California into rethinking it's stance on Gay Marriage, as the reasons for keeping only heterosexual marriages legal are hypocritical and a contradiction at best.
