Expectations and the Reality of Advanced Jobs

1. What was your 'dream job' and did you end up snaffooing it?

My dream job was RDM, however when I started playing this game on Halloween I had NO clue on how this game worked lol. Didn't know about Signet so I wasn't making any money selling crystals. The AH wasn't working for me because my firewall program wasn't configured correctly. So basically I got to lvl 10 RDM, with lvl 1 gear, and died half a dozen times before I seriously started researching this game  After that I switched to monk, got to lvl 30 to unlock some subjobs, then I started playing all the other mage classes and haven't touched RDM much since.

2. Was your 'dream job' what you thought it would be? If it wasn't are you okay with the way it's implemented?

Now that I know how this game works I think I'd be a good RDM. I'm still kinda disillusioned because of my cluelessness at those first 10 RDM levels tho lol.

3. After playing a few levels of your dream job are you thinking of taking it all the way to 75 or did you decide it really wasn't your dream job in the end? If it wasn't what job are you going to level instead?

Might pick up RDM again if I really get bored with Summoner, but you can't really solo as a RDM like you can as a SMN. :D

When I was reading up on the game before it came out, the job that really caught my attention was the Bard. I love music and I play piano, flute and sing so I thought it would be cool to do the same in the game. I'm still enjoying it. I started out with WHM and still really enjoy that, and it's even better with Palum as his BLM...i really need to catch up to him.

I really didn't know what to expect except that there was a lot of running around involved hehe. That has proven quite true...I was a little disenchanted with it at first as you don't have very many useful songs at first, but once lvl 25 rolled around, things started to pick up and get really fun^^

Bard is the 1 job I know that I want to take to 75. That is still a long way off (LVL 43 right now) and I feel almost physically sick thinking about how much time that will take hehe But the thought of playing Chocobo's Mazurka and giving my entire party (almost) Flee makes me pee my pants.

1. My dream job was Samurai when I looked through the manual before I installed the game. I just think Samurai are cool.

2. Samurai really wasn't what I thought it was when I got the job and played it for a little while. Alright job, just not what I wanted to play.

3. After a few levels, I thought of it as a job that I'd level when I was slightly bored or once I was done leveling another job. My starting job was Warrior, and my level 75 job will be Warrior, hopefully. I've had hard times with it, but I still enjoy it. And no matter what people told me (Someone from ls: "Go PLD or DRK. WAR isn't a real job." Me: "STFU. I don't say you should change your job. And is it not a real job because I don't have magic? That's stupid. /breaklinkshell"), I still stuck with it.

(I didn't really break their pearl for giving me crap about it, but at times I felt like it.)

I knew nothing about ffxi when I bought it, I am however a big fan of ff in general, just not into video games and such. I didn't even know dif between adv jobs and reg jobs, just started as a elvaan rdm from windy. Now I know that is an odd combo. Once I got to the mid 20's as a Rdm/war I realized it wasnt going to work, I choose Rng as the Job that would be for me.
Now that my rng is 22 what do I think?
Yes I'm glad I choose it.
I hope to bring it to 75, but we will see the expense.
Its a very fun job, you can set pace of pty by pulling, and you can contribute a lot to pty by keeping yourself well equiped. Yes it is expensive but so far I've been able to handle it, barely.

thats why it didn't work out, you subbed WAR with RDM as Elvaan, IMO, BLM is the best sub for RDM, and more MP for your low MP Elvaan.
At 30 as RDM/BLM i run out of MP rarely, and i'm Elvaan

yup I was the noob who wouldn't listen. luckily when i got to quifim I noticed how gimped I was an immediatly stopped playing rdm/war.... wish eveyone was smart enough to read ff boards to improve their game ^^

Excellent topic, Sabia. It's something that's been on my mind a few times :)

1. What was your 'dream job' and did you end up snaffooing it?

When I first heard of FFXI, only the six basic jobs had been announced. I also had not heard of the job system yet (I figured you chose one job, ala FF1, and stuck with it), so I was thinking of RDM. Thought that if I was locking myself into one job, it might as well be a versatile one. I'm very glad I didn't do this.
Later on, the advanced jobs were announced, and finally Samurai as well in Zilart. I never really liked the Samurai class in the other FF games, until I realized that in FFT they were exactly what I wanted from RDM (versatile - they could even heal with their Katana techs), but with a bit more melee, which I've always liked. I ended up choosing SAM on that basis, even though I didn't really know anything about how they worked in FFXI, and just never changed my mind until I got the game.

2. Was your 'dream job' what you thought it would be? If it wasn't are you okay with the way it's implemented?

It was not. It was very, very different. In fact, it had absolutely nothing to do with the FFT incarnation, as I thought it would, other than wielding katanas.
However, there was another part of the game I hadn't heard about until just before I got it: Skillchains. Before I even knew what SAM did, I fell in love with those, and used them proudly from the first time I was ever in a group situation (usually as the only one who knew what they were, simply because I was obsessed with them).
The rest, I'm sure, you can guess. Suffice to say, I'm happy as can be with my job choice, even though it wasn't what I expected.

3. After playing a few levels of your dream job are you thinking of taking it all the way to 75 or did you decide it really wasn't your dream job in the end? If it wasn't what job are you going to level instead?

Absolutely sticking with SAM. I'm having a good time messing around with other jobs, but there's none that come close to my appreciation for SAM. I'll be skillchaining big-time all the way to 75 :)
