Well, this is a help me out thread, cause i'm quite computer-retarded.

Here's the deal - my old computer finally died out on me and i lost the bajillion songs i had, however, i have them all on my ipod, and i really don't wanna lose em. What i want is to transfer the songs, or copy them to my new hard drive from the ipod, someone told me it wasn't possible, but i doubt that...

Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Ipod's become parented to your computer, so you cant "share" songs with other comps. As far as I know you cant get your songs off your Ipod if it isnt the same one you set up with.

I know when you plug it in to the other computer it says it has to wipe it clean. Im sure someone out there has figured it out tho.

You need windows for this.

  • Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
  • In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
  • In the Tools menu -> Options, in the View Tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Navigate to the Music folder. On my 2nd gen 'pod, the full path is
    Portable Media Devices\Robio's Ipod (F:\iPod_Control\Music
  • Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.

Dude, you just saved me hours of downloading.

You can. You have to authorize the new computer with your account in itunes, and when you connect the ipod it should ask if you want to back up your songs.

edit: or you could use Kotsu's more "underground" method. heh.

Yeah, you ipod can be authorized to several computers at once. I've heard it's limited to 3, but I've used more than 3 computers with mine and haven't had anything happen yet.

Kotsu's method is really useful, but at the same time the music files aren't named in a way that you can tell what they are. All of the information is still there(you can see the info if you set your window to detail mode) and they're still MP3's, but they just have random names. If you're just doing it to back them up on your computer, you shouldn't have to worry, but if you wanted to organize them or play them through your computer, it'll be more annoying.

Yea, my method is a pain in the dick in regards to what Baja is talking about. I'm a meticulous person though and I sort my songs by Name - Title so I would actually take the time and do like 100 songs a night for 10 days and sort out 1000 songs. >.> lol if you're just flipping them though, they may come up with names and stuff in iTunes due to how it's coded. I dunno; take a look.

You can authorize up to five computers. More than five and you have to de-authorize.

Search for ilinkpod or xpod, those programs will copy your iPod files back to your computer. And to bypass the authorize 5 only sht, copy the song/movie to a CD and import that copy back to iTunes.
