Laptop Users, I got questions...

I use a real high end laptop, I got a Radeon 9700 128 DDR ram on that, 1 gig of ram, a Intel Centrino 2 GHZ, 80 Gig HSS and a 17 inch widescreen monitor. In short the game looks gorgues. The bad side is that I lack a number pad, that can be a royal bitch at times, I have to hold down the Fn key when I am running, so pulling can be a nuisance.

woot! I'm glad I found this topic, I'm looking to get a laptop myself since I'm moving next week and won't have my desktop avalable until June or so. XD Plus I've wanted to get a laptop for the longest time anyway, in case I get deployed somewhere. Thanks for posting all your specs and such as well, now I know what to look for. 8)

This Laptop fucking rules. No Ifs And or Buts about it. Just amazing.

And tit's Super Quiet and No heat generated at all.

KK gonna poke around in the forum and go back to playing.

Picked up a Toshiba Satellite A75-S211 just now. 3.2 GHz P4, 512 megs of RAM, ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP. Gonna install FFXI shortly and see how it runs. 8)

Damn..... Now I'm getting laptop envy.........

Just remember... Size does matter.

Look at the Resolution of the screen,
The screen I got is 1920x1200. It was the upgrade version of the 'stock' screen. I will tell you this, reading websites, and the crystal clarity makes it look and feel Like I am reading a magazine. ~$100.00 more for a massively high resolution screen I think was a nice deal.

You can grab all the fancy shit you want, a Fast Processor, Tons of RAm, a Huge Hard Drive, and the most up to date Mainboard technologies, but it wont amout to shit if your experience is not maximized. A Good Screen, Video Card, Mouse and Keyboard, and your Computer is just a really fast calculator. Add those things and you got a Massively powerfull tool that can translate information to a medium that is more readily accepted by your senses, and make things more enjoyable.

woot! My laptop puts my desktop to shame in running FFXI. I dont have FRAPS on the laptop yet but I could definately see a difference. (Gotta get used to the controls though XD)

I play on a Dell XPS Laptop

It cost me about 3k when I bought in in December 2004.

It runs FFXI beautifully but the thing that you need to remember is that FFXI will depend on your internet connection. You said you want to play on the go so you will need another connection from sprint or another wireless company. As this is another connection it will cost you about 30USD a month. Not to mention the initial start up fee. This, however, is still not a good idea as we have all seen how packed Jeuno can be. The connection you can get for a laptop on the go will be a 56k connection. FFXI will look at this and laaaaugh. I wouldn't be surprised if you got lagged out of POL. You can do it if you want but it will be very hard playing on 56k. Your graphics will be nice though. ^^

p.s. I don't know what a Workstation is or who makes it. I can't say anything about it.

Dell c610

I just loaded the game up on my Dell C610 - given to me from work - and the game runs fine. Laptop specs are P4 1.8, 1 gig of ram, and a radeon something mobility card (9000? I dunno right now... it's a 64 meg card). It runs just fine at 1024x768 and windowed. The only real difference between this and my desktop is that I absolutely hate playing without the full numberpad on the keyboard... on the plus side, I can kick back on the couch and play ;)

The Dell C series laptops run anywhere from $450-1000 on eBay.ca (thats canadian dollars, so cheaper for you) and and they are much more reliable than the newer D series laptops, which my company has had endless problems with - they actually finally closed their contract with Dell and moved onto IBM thinkpads because of the ammount of replacements we went through on the D series.

PS. desktop is same CPU, 512megs of ram and a GeForce Ti4200 128mb card... so, it can handle bigger screen res without choking, but I play with basically the same settings on both.

What happens when Lenova fully takes over the IBM pc side? Does that affect your companys deals with them? I sure hope the quality stays the same, and the innovation. And hopefully the tech support, I"m already having problems when they send me over to india for dell tech support. Some of them guys just don't understand..........

A workstation is just an industry term for "better desktop". It where you get shit done, you could actually call a laptop a workstation. I actually work more done on a laptop at work then a desktop, so hence its my "workstation".
