Please participate in this MMoG study

I wanted to take a moment to thank members of this community for their support on this survey. We have received a very good number of responses and response rate; your time spent is quite appreciated.

Addressing some of the thoughts and comments in this thread:

1. There are three researchers developing this study. Myself, the lead researcher, and one of the other researchers have experience in MMoG’s (the third researcher is more familiar with Quake/Tribes type games).
2. Our intended study involves comparisons between virtual communities; we are replicating this study across several MMoG’s. Because of the unique characteristics of FFXI (particularly the culture splash when the game first launched in the US), I believe FFXI communities will provide some very interesting insights.
3. While I apologize for the length and apparent repetition of the survey, that level of repetition is unfortunately required to develop studies for various academic journals.
4. If it’s acceptable with your Administrators/Moderators, we will provide a snapshot of the findings when we complete the study. What we hope to find will not be remotely shocking to any of you (it will shock academics though).
5. I agree that context (with Admins in particular as noted by a previous poster) would enrich the study, we need to get a basic 'big picture' study done first. I would like to develop a guild/linkshell type follow-up study later, this current study lays some of the foundation for that. Ideally built off of findings from this study, the linkshell study will be much shorter!

Again, I thank those who have completed the survey as well as those that have explained why they have not. The results and the feedback are appreciated and will help in the development of future studies.

We are still in data collection though. Any individuals viewing this for the first time (work week starting and everything) as well as those who have partially completed the survey, we would very much appreciate your assistance.

Regards,

T.A. Voelker

Oh god I tried. Man I really tried.
I got to page 3 of 5 (while at work) and decided that my
JOB is more fun.

I think the HIDDEN data gathered and thesis are the same:
MMORPG players and their small attention spans.

I think the real data collected is simple:
1) how many gamers attempted this
2) what page did they get to (3 of 5 me! yay)
2.5) did they complete it?

Sorry man, I can't finish it. I even MEMORIZED my answers to make it faster and it was still boring. I didn't memorize them on purpose it was just like this:

How many times... (kill Stealing) answer: 4 (5 being the highest)
I just remembered it

It seemed pretty fair, if you're familiar with surveys like this at all, honestly. There was some repetition, but not as much as some responses would have one believe. There are subtle nuances to the majority of the questions. I just wish that crummy soundtrack was gone. It's a little silly. There's usually some payoff to surveys like this, too, so if we could see the paper when it's finished/published, or get a heads-up when the book becomes available, that would be pretty good.

I find studies about online games a bit more fascinating than the games themselves at times, so this was a fun little diversion. Thanks!

I'd like to know what your trying to acomplish with this study, i dont see the point my self... :(
