So I finally got a /tell from someone

its happened so many times for me i just dont care anymore. I have no tears to shed for a system to which everybody is subject to. Yea it was a dick move and the lack of respect for kindness in this game is utterly appalling, but thats the wicked ways of the ffxi world. Put up or shut up is how I cope these days lol.

On a side note I remember that EQ had a lot of respect for camping and it was first come first serve, which was nice (even on rallos zek the pvp server). Its amazing how the fast lane to greed in this game has stricken and trickled down to virtually every player, just the way the cookie crumbles I suppose.

And one more oddity is that in Japan respect and honor are top ranking among their culture. Give them a fake world without said respect and honor and theyre like americans slaughtering the indians in pursuit to fatten their pockets. (obviously a very vague implication I mean no offense by that just merely an observation of history)

Although I think she over-reacted, I can understand how she thought she was in front of you. When my wife and I are running somewhere, it looks like I'm ahead of her on my screen and on her screen it looks like she's in front of me.

I see. I can buy this bug related stuff.
However, I also moved first, got there first, drew my weapon first and struck first...Too many things said I owned it from the beginning.
That said, I go back to my original point that she should have just kept her trap shut about it in the first place rather than try and tell me what to do and how to act from her high horse.
It was 1 kill.
Then I left...
I can understand if she said something to me if I wouldn't leave, but even then it's ultimately my decision to stay or go.

She always has the option to call a GM on me right? Well she was quite upset about it...I wonder why she didn't? That's a real mystery.
If she did, this would be the GM's conversation with her:
:lol: --> Meris
"Chill, woman!"

Maybe I just caught her at a bad time or something. LOL

I only read the first post on this topic, but wanted to add the following information:

My wife and I play on two seperate machines, side by side. If my character and hers are side by side running in the same direction on my screen; She is WAY ahead of me on hers.

The point being that, visually, latency is an issue in determining who was actually 'in front'.

As far as claiming mobs is concerned, the game handles that just fine. First strike on server side = Claim.

Just wanted to clarify that latency does effect where people are on your box. A players actual movements are near instant on their own games, but to others you can add in a good 2-3 second delay.

Yeah I don't debate the whole latency thing at all.
At the time she said it, after she got nasty, and then backpeddled, I could have cared less what her excuse was. She already earned herself a spot.
We actually came to something of an agreement at one point and wished each other luck and the best, etc. I was happy about that. Then she starts up again...And then I see the miss /tells...

What a dumbass.

hey I got a simple idea that will make nm camping much much simpler and less competitive for players who at least want to make use of this. If more than one person is waiting to kill an nm, and they all know it. Why not just have everyone do a random roll? The person who scores highest gets the first kill, plain and simple. After that, they wait for the other people to roll amongst themselves and then another person takes it. That, to me, would be the fairest way WITHOUT people getting completely screwed out of kills. That way you can't blame anyone for being faster on the draw or you can't blame latency issues or any of that bs. It's just a simple random roll that everyone can see and nobody can argue against. From reading the posts, I know that most of you guys here aren't a-holes, so why not just agree to use this system from now on, and then we'll have no reason to spread the hate amongst ourselves :) I'm all for sharing, even if I have to wait. Hell I do it all the time if I'm with a group to get an item for a mission. If I lose the lot for it, oh well. Why compete when you don't have to? Why be a dick if there's a way not to? I know it won't save people from those random jerks that come along, but hey I know a lot of people who play the game who are good people and like helping out. This would just be another way of doing so.

This wasn't NM hunting or camping. This was one lowly crawler in East Saru.

As far as NM camping, I understand where you are coming from, but there are other variables that factor in to why someone acts the way they do. NMs are different and I think most people would agree.
Fairness would be good, as many (not all) people would agree.
However, seeing someone else camping and asking them to participate in a roll is pretty weak. I really doubt it would work out more than 1% of the time. I suppose it's worth a shot, but honestly, if I had been camping for an hour and waiting for an NM to pop, and someone showed up asking me to /random for it, I would tell him he's nuts...You either wait for me to get it, or you compete...Or SE comes out with a way to manage the NM camping somehow. This is a separate thing altogether.

When its farming, it is true that the one who grabs it first wins. You are trying to make money after all. Just like harvesting etiquette. I think that's pretty much the only rule for farming. I try not to farm in a levelling area so I don't interfere with other people's levelling but this was a farming situation with two people high above the level of hte crawler. Like everyone says, crawlers are EVERYWHERE. Personally though, I hate camping crawlers because their drops are sooo unreliable..lol.

I think I'm a very fair farmer. I farm in giddeus and if I see another player training mobs and mobs of yags, I leave them and turn the other way so I don't conflict with their path. Even though they haven't killed them, I still think it's courteous to leave them alone. I hate it when other people come and leech off my kills (I'm talking about high levels stealing my trains. Not the low level who is trying to level off them, I'm ok with that.)

I think the rule: Don't do what you don't want done to you is always a good rule.

As for notorious monsters IN A PERFECT HONEST WORLD, the rolling thing would work out. But as we know....in the world of Van'diel, there are people who aren't going to be that courteous as we'd like. I can easily see someone agreeing and just macro-provoking it when it pops. The rolling thing doesn't work too well. Take the emperor for example. That thing has a 1-2 (even up to four from other player's experiences) hour respawn time. If there are four people waiting for the WHOLE time, that's 8 hours until the fourth person could get a chance at it and that doesn't include the people who just wander in periodically and camp for their 30 minutes or so. I'd agree to it, but the best way would probably camp with friends and split the profits.

Indeed. The golden rule is golden and all shiny for a reason. It makes perfect sense.

Just yesterday I was in Horutoto Outer farming for fire crystals, wild onions, bat wings, etc. with level 11 WAR at the time. I saw two or three other people down there and wondered if I was bothering them.
After a couple minutes I asked them what they were doing down there (leveling???) because I was just farming and would be happy to leave if they felt I was holding them back.
They mentioned I was no bother and that they were doing the mission with the orbs there...
I helped them finish up and then we decided to join forces and go to Tahrongi.

This is typically the way I act towards people in Vana'diel.
However, going by to my original post, if you come off like you are telling me my business or that you are complaining or bitching about me, well...
Get bent. And get over it.
You'll get no help from me, and you will earn your place in my mind as a tight ass.
I've still never put anyone on my /blist, but I'm not opposed to it or anything. Some people are just completely clueless and need to know when to shut their mouths. Or they need to learn how to talk to people if there is something concerning to them.

"Stealing" one crawler and being so upset about it just doesn't seem like a concerning matter though. Especially when you can't friggin' STEAL anything from anyone in this game.
Whiner...

I think basically what I was trying to get at with the random roll idea is along the same lines as the four way stop rules :P If someone gets there before you, yield to them. Otherwise people should go in some predetermined order, and since you can't go around clockwise in this situation, it just makes sense to roll. If people just go whenever the hell they want at a four way stop, the road starts to get backed up, but if people wait their turn, you end up getting a much more efficient, fair, and *faster* way of getting everyone through the area. When I was camping bubbly burny, there was a party there doing a trick to make the gil faster, so we just ended up taking turns killing him. Everybody wins. Meh, if I see anyone camping an nm I'll suggest the /roll idea, especially if it's one of you all. I don't mind waiting my turn, but it's really annoying to have someone frantically run and voke something just to get a chance :P Gives a really crappy vibe to the game in my opinion. I just want everyone to have fun.

I don't mind waiting either. Honestly, if I knew that I had 4 people in front of me and everyone would be honest about it, I could leave the game and go get dinner and do chores around the house, come back at a certain time and do my thing.
However, this is a huge thing for the community to commit to. There will be some that would want to go along with it. I would be one. However, I'd throw the towel in on this idea the second I ran up to an NM at the same time as another player and tried to ask him to /random for it, and by the time I type "slash" he's voked the thing and started beating it down. Then I have to wait longer, huh?
Looks like the nice guys would finish last.
I can see this working for a couple people hunting a slightly hunted NM, but it is too much of a culture change to work for the NMs that drop the items that sell for mucho gil. You'll still have people run up and take the NM because they can...BECAUSE THEY CAN. The only solution to NM hunting or camping will come via a code change from SE.
I'm not trying to be negative, but I think this is more realistic.

Remember all the other frustrating stuff in the other FF games? Some things are just extras in the game...You don't HAVE to do them unless you want to.

hmm it kinda makes me wonder what the Japanese were doing during nm hunting before the North Americans started playing. How did they do the whole "mine-if-I-grab-it-first" thing? If anybody knows what it was like, I'd like to hear about it. Yah I agree with you on that issue now though. If two people reach an nm at the same time and it's just sitting there, one of you is gonna grab it. That's coo, that's basically what's gonna happen. I dunno though, usually when you get to the camp you have to sit around and wait for the damn thing to spawn. *That's* the situation I'm talking about. It all depends on how much time there is when you get there I guess.

Free for all till code change.
God knows I'm not gonna /random for what I want and I know my competition wants.

What about Training?

Now I dont really care so much about supposed kill stealing. I have been yelled at for such silly things before and the most anyone ever gets out of me is the finger, but training all the monsters in an area is really kinda lame. I make a point to go BLM and stonaga the whole train when I see someone doing that in any of the standard Newb zones right outta town.

I agree with all of you on your beliefs about KS, but I felt like throwing in something about training as well.

The first person on my very short blacklist complained to me about kill-stealing. I wont name names because he posts here often, and i dont want to start anything big with him or his freinds. One day i'm walking through the dunes with a lower level job and bats aggro me. No big, I'm fairly close to zone and I'll make it fine. But i get this tell, "I'd help you but you stole all my kills last night" not knowhing WHO he was I replied "Are you sure you don't have me confused with someone else?" and he said "No, it was you. you were here last night" which i was. So i said "You sent a tell to me to accuse me of something I wasn't even aware of and flaunt that you WONT help me because of it?" and he said "yeah"
So i asked him why, if he thought i was stealing his mobs, he didnt send me a tell then. "Because you should have known"
Never even SAW him the night before. Had a name i woulda remembered too. Never even saw him.
Moral of the story, if you think someone's being rude, politely ask him/her about their business. Chances are, they may not even know they're doing anything. And if they do, flip em the bird!
