Actually, lactation can be much like birth control and does prevent the mother from ovulating. This is especially seen in primates. It is to allow for the mother to care for its offspring and devote attention to it, rather than get knocked up again. When the female begins to wean its offspring, the horomone that supresses ovulation begins to wear off, allowing the female to come into heat and breed again.

This is nature's birth control. It doesn't work well in humans though, due to the many variables neded to actually pull this method off.
