"It's calling me, that formless shape without a face.
I can hear it's voice on that strange wind, that strange wind that cries.
Fleshy lips are parting, but no sound is coming out. But I know, I know, that it is talking to me.
Perhaps not to me, but maybe through me?"
Into the black ink that makes up Copellia's mind. A powerful thing, silence. So many myriad feelings can come with the lack of sound. The span of human emotion is so wide, that if you compared it to a field, it would be endless.
And for Copellia, her emotions always existed in a Winter like place. As fine as sugar, as dry as salt, but always clean. When she closed her eyes, she was able to see only the color white, where others would see just the blackness behind their eye lids.
Copellia's body was alive with pain, the only sign that she was still amongst the living, in some way.
The fall had been a long one, wind ripping at her clothing, in attempts to get to her skin. Had the night not been as nice, Copellia would have minded more. But the air was cool, and the moon hardly showed it's face to her. Cold and gray, something was familiar about this decent. There was nothing to be feared, and nothing to be gained, as far as she knew. Perhaps there was a great deal to be lost to the landing that awaited her below? Eyebrows perking upwards, lending to her expression a curious light, Copellia managed to open her eyes, for the first time in what seemed to be ages. Green was fast approaching, the ground was just ahead. But Copellia still felt nothing, not even a lump in her throat. Without a doubt too calm, as her bones were sure to snap like twigs, with in the next five minutes.
What thoughts did she hold with in her now? None, if you were to ask her. For the first time in years, her mind was a blank slate, white as snow. There were no nagging questions, there were no answers. Off of the walls of her mind, a faint song played it's self out. The young woman was whistling to herself, and a tune that she had never head before in her life. But at this moment, it seemed to fit her like a glove.
Where had she come from?
{I can hear it calling me.}
Where had she been?
{I can hear it on the wind.}
Where was she going?
{No matter where I turn...}
What was tugging at her tightly wound strings?
{..I can always hear the ocean..}
Tired, she could hardly keep her eyes open, the lids feeling as though thousand pound weights had been attached. Not one to fight nature, at least not any more, Copellia let her eyes close. For then, there was no sound. For then, not an image interrupted her peace.
{If you listen closely...}
No longer crawling forward, or appearing to, the well seemed to leap up and open it's jaws.
{.. you can hear me calling.}
Open wide, the hungry monster simply waited, bathed in pale sunlight.
And with a single wet noise, the fluids with in it's bricky stomach washing about,
it swallowed Copellia whole.
Far from full to the gills, Copellia was nothing but a pebble, causing no ripples. Vomit out water, the well did not. Given a few moments, it's meal would settle at the bottom, and that would be all that she wrote.
Not with a bang, or even a whimper, Copellia sank towards the sand coated bottom-
chest hardly heaving.
The water forced it's way in, the water forced it's way out, bubbles filling her throat absorbing any shouts. Hitting the water with such force, it caused her skin to sting, as if live bugs were underneath the upper most layer of said skin. In short, it itched more than anything that Copellia had ever felt before. Frame buoyant for a few moments, the water sucked her in with a quickness, feeling solid and thick. Perhaps if she had a heart of air she would float to the top? Nay, that was a foolish thing to hope for. With a head and a heart like a stone, she would only sink, and sink quickly. Hands out at her sides, fingers flexing against the upwards current of the water- the gray haired woman continued to sink like a stone, and fall like a dying star. It did not take long, for the skin to prune, wrinkling up like over kissed lips.
Eventually, those fingers would give one last flex, leaving palms open to the world.
Quicker now, the water padding her fall, Copellia was forced to the bottom, and met with a most abrupt stop. Left shoulder slammed into the ground with an unheard crack, the shock waves of pain tugging Copellia's eyes open. It had taken long enough for the calmness to peel away, and for the fear to set in.
Seeing the bubbles float over head, carrying her breath towards the velveteen surface of the well, Copellia bit her bottom lip. It was certainly too late for that, as most of her precious breath had been strangled from her body, leaving her with no hope of returning to the top side, not with the single lung full of air that she had remaining.
{Even now...}
The impact caused Copellia to bounce, her lips twisted, almost threatening to let out the last bit of stored air that she had, but she was able to swallow down the scream.
{.. all I see is ..}
Right arm had shot out, the flats of her fingers feeling for the side of the well. Finding nothing , at first, her actions became a little more wild, round spheres exiting her nose, counting down to her last breath.
{.. blue ..}
Although it hurt, she forced her fingers against what she was able to find, which was a space of smooth brick. Nails bending up, a few snapping to the quick, Copellia clawed around-
"Something, anything, please be there..."
Her fading thoughts pleaded.
Her fumbling fingers found nothing at first. A bad sign, added to the fact that she had no clue how far down she had fallen. Toes having met the sandy bottom of the well, Copellia was able to balance herself, somewhat, rotating her body enough to where she found both hands flat on the mystery wall.
I've seen tears in my mother's eyes,
I've seen anger in the working pace of my father's stride
And I wonder why.
When all I feel is love inside,
When all I feel is love inside.
Like broken wings, and just as useless for a time, the flats of Copellia's hands slammed against that wall. It was no door way, and there was sure to be no one on the other side. But she was frantic, panicked, and nothing else came so naturally to her.
Bending her knees, trying to ignore the pain that resonated in her body, the strange woman leapt off of her toes, enough of a boost to get her feet off of the ground, and without a hitch.
A single shove, she managed to push herself back enough, to be able to windmill her arms. One was broken, the shoulder shattered like sugar glass, she couldn't control it for much of anything. But she kept her good arm out stretched, those fingers clawing into the occasional soft spot in the wall, lifting her up towards the light of the moon, which reflected pale white on the dark water. Upwards, she began to make her way, although there was little to no hope of her making it to the top.
So rise,
Rise and shine, my baby.
Tomorrow's here,
Won't you rise,
Rise and shine for me?
Wipe away those tears and rise,
Rise and shine,
Shine for me.
If the world is broken,
It's just because hearts get broken,
It's just because hearts get broken,
Sticks and stones have broken my bones,
But words hurt even more,
And I wonder what for.
When all I feel is love inside,
When all I feel is love inside.
Just how much time had passed, there was no way for Copellia to have a way of knowing. The faint feeling had it's hands on her, tossing her about in the mirky water of the well. All she knew was that she wanted to survive, the selfishness deeply routed in her human coil. Despite what fate may have in store for humans, they always tend to fight it. Self preservation was in the blood, and was stubborn tendencies. To never say die was part of living, a needless part, as all things would die anyway. Head throbbing, legs quickly beginning to tire, Copellia was far from the mouth of the well.
So rise,
Rise and shine, my baby.
Tomorrow's here,
Won't you rise,
Rise and shine for me?
Wipe away those tears and rise,
Rise and shine,
Shine for me.
There were times you hurt me so,
I had to run and hide.
If I can dry your tears for you,
Then why can't you dry mine,
When I know all you feel is love inside?
She could not give up, she would not die without trying to live just a little bit longer.
That was when her hand met it, a metal grip. Perhaps a bit too over joyous, unable to curve her enthusiasm, Copellia grabbed onto it, and hoisted herself up. That hand grip would be come a foot hold, another just above it. Quickly, like a spider, she began to climb.
{Never going to lay down, no matter if you tell me to over a thousand times!}
The holds were very slick, rusted, and under many feet of water. But she would press on.
{Not even if I know I'm living just to die ..}
Her head titling backwards, she did her best to keep those eyes open, and hope in her straining heart.
{.. I can't help but try ..}
So rise,
Rise and shine, my baby.
Tomorrow's here,
Won't you rise,
Rise and shine for me.
Wipe away those tears and rise,
Rise and shine,
Shine for me.
The horrible pressure that placed it's self on her chest, she could hardly hold out. It was so tempting to just let ever bit of herself go, watch her breath rise in colorless bubbles to the top. But Copellia bit her lip, and she carried herself forward on strength that she did not know that she had. Dark as the night, but red to color her soul, blood had begun to rise out of the young woman's nostrils, her head filling with static.
{.. Just as long as I try ..}
One working hand, legs threatening to dump her back to the well bottom, she continued upwards, the world nothing more than a blur. Over head, the whiteness of the moon grew brighter, and the water a little less heavy.
{.. Even if I find myself knocking on heaven's door ...}
Out of the water, pale fingers came, searching around the smooth brick of the well's open jaw. Her heart danced, just moments from death, her cheeks puffing out as unseen fingers squeezed at her, attempting to draw forth her last breath.
And I wonder what for?
When all I feel is love inside,
When all I feel is love inside.
Fingers hooked onto the side of the well, simply staying there for several moments. Not a shred of strength did she had left, floating like a buoy at sea. Copellia's eyes couldn't help but close, as sleep was calling to her now.
"It's calling me, that formless shape without a face.
I can hear it's voice on that strange wind, that strange wind that cries."
Copellia tilted her head back more, lips twisting in the corners. How she longed to taste the sweet air above.
{Just a little further ..}
Broken arm was forced out of the water, only to be caught on the outside latter.
The pain was enough to jostle Copellia awake for a few more moments. Bones would always mend, that was obvious.
Bare toes pushing off of the top most footing, she was able to force her form out of the well, coughing and sputtering.
{I listened to you, I can't ignore you.}
Stomach pumping, she began to vomit a mixture of bile and water, to the ground below.
{Something tells me that you were, at some point, important to me.}
So very cold, so very cold, she came to a rest over the edge of the well.
{This is the fate I've been damned to-}
Rolling, her body would eventually hit the snow covered ground below.
{-to not remember, as hard as I try.}
Laid on her side, coughing up the water that had crept into her lungs, Copellia had survived.
Rise and shine.
Tomorrow I will have no shame, tomorrow I will have no shame, and I will start all over again.
