As of now I'm running on Windows 2000 with an old Nvidia Nforce2 Motherboard. a Geforce FX 5500 Videocard and an x86 AuthenticAMD~2171Mhz processor and like .75GBs of RAM DDR style.

I'll probably keep the W2K might upgrade to XP.

As for the video card I've been eying the

EVGA GeForce 8600 512MB DDR3 video card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130290

I picked up a 2GB card of DDR2 Memory already.

Now all I really need is a decent motherboard/processor for lets say no more than $150 each. I'm just trying to get something thats optimal with each other and not say a shitty motherboard and a 1337 processor.

Suggestions on my selection for the video card and which mo.bo / CPU to go for please.

Is it the sales rep was trying to tell me i should get a 256MB DDR3 over this 512MB DDR2 I was looking at saying it would be quicker or something.'

So i figured a 512 DDR3 would be > than either of those?

bump still looking for recomendations

Yes, 512 DDR3 is the optimum way to go. Don't bother going with 256 of either, and 512 of DDR2 will bottleneck the card's capabilities.

I would highly recommend eVGA for the brand, since they have the upgrade guarantee. If your budget allows for it, you might consider the 8800 for roughly 50 dollars more than the 8600.

Also, I noticed you have 2 gigs of ram listed. Are you trying for XP or Vista? Vista can be a little hard on 2 gigs if you multitask or play taxing games. If you have XP, you're good as gold, though your Direct X 10 card will go a little wasted.

If you post a budget I'd be happy to build you a recommendation when I get a chance. You really only gave soft caps on the proc/mobo. Also, one word of warning, make sure your power supply can handle all this new juice being drawn from it. If you plan to use the same case with these new parts, it might not have pci-e adapters, and probably won't have enough watts to run everything.

For a motherboard, I'd go with a Asus motherboard that supports Intel Processors. You could try on one of their Republic of Gamers models (Striker Extreme, for example). The only problem with that MB is that you need to update the BIOS before putting more than 2GB of memory. For a processor, Intel Core 2 Duo as Alanon posted.

Last year, around November, I made my own:

Motherboard: ASUS Striker Extreme
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131274

RAM: 4 cards 1GB each

Video Card: BFG GTS 8800 320MB x2 (SLI)
(Not available at NewEgg under BFG)

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad

And 3 Interal HDs, 500GB each.

My baby. :)
