Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.

The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.

If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.
Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

The publicly available report -- which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs -- also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

Video Analysis and Content Extraction - software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video

Tangram - A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack

Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination - This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program. It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.
The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure in literature.

It figures. I'll be going to the Cyber Command center next month with work, I'll take some good notes and let you know what's up. (It pays to work for the mayor!)

Here's the article on Cyber Command.

our government is stupid...but i seriously doubt they're that stupid =/

you would be surprised at how stupid our gov is.. you know they plan on shooting rockets at our freakin moon feb of 09 to "see" just to see if there is ice water locked beneath the poles on the moon.. wth.. now tell me that they wouldnt do something like this.

Thats not really a good comparison, There are alot of things scientist could learn from finding water on the moon. they've been looking for evidence on frozen water on other planets for a long time. Besides its not like they're gonna nuke the moon or anything they're probably hitting it with a rocket just powerful enough to break the surface. Prob equivalent to the explosives miners use on earth.

Looking for Terrorist in WoW however is so completely asinine that I'm pretty sure this was fabricated by someone, for the people who do/want to believe their government is that stupid.

yea thats a REAL legit article right there. They are also using home microwaves to monitor your brain waves, you need to wear aluminum foil hats to prevent it! Cell phones? All about the mind control.

Don't forget those so called "Con trails" the trails behind jets thats actaully mind control serum being released into the atmosphere.

I'm not sure how a scientific experiment defines how stupid our government is?

Such as?

I haven't played it before but I'd doubt it?

Not sure, Female characters with exposed flesh and hair? Most of the Islamic extremist terrorist live by a pretty strict Islamic or sharia law, I'm sure theres SOMETHING thats a violation in WoW. Just the fact that it was made by the "evil west" probably makes even owning it a crime to terrorist.

About fem chars, yeah it's possible since Islam is pretty specific on public appearance, but not likely for Islamic extremists.

They don't live by Islamic law fyi, and if they aren't living by Islamic law then they really aren't Muslims in the first place(you didn't say this, but I mentioned it because if the above was true then every Muslim would be labeled as a terrorist).

It's true that the best Muslims follow Islam strict, but there are some lines that aren't to be crossed such as association with Allah(Arabic for God, which Christians believe Jesus is the son of).

Islamic terrorists pretty much warp the law into their own devices and at their convenience, so it's easy to say that they're hypocritical.

Gold and silk(no-no for Muslim males) was found in Hussein's place when it was taken over by troops as well as golden silverware(right term for forks, knives, etc.?) which is also not a part of tradition. The only reason 'Islamic' is strung with terrioist is to label them as a group 'properly'(properly meaning where they warp their ideals from but not to group with other terroist groups).

Not that I think we'll find terroists in videogames(lol)...it's possible but I'd like to see funds invested elsewhere...

forgot to add, the Islamic law is Sharia'h, of course I'm guessing I'm spelling it right.

Yeah sorry, I should have clarified. and you're right, "Islamic Terrorist" are such a perversion and warping of Islam I guess they shouldnt be called Muslims in the first place. Its like those psychos that call themselves Christians and protest the funerals of soldiers, homosexuals, and even those little Amish girls that were killed in that school shooting. I sure as hell don't like calling them Christians because they are a complete perversion and warping of Christianity. What they both do is a complete violation of nearly every Ideal their religions teach.

I would just think most terrorist would probably flip their lids at even the idea of playing an American MMORPG.

Ok, first of thanks for the rate down..lol . Maybe im just paranoid and uninformed, but as for the moon thing yeah i probably should have left that out.

OT: Why is it so hard to believe that terrorist would use online gaming to communicate?
That being the only place where thier conversations are not monitored (as much) as say yackin on the phone? I dont know I'm not trying to start a debate about this but its just something to think about.

Sorry I should have put more thought in to my earlier post.

Sorry I should have put more thought in to my earlier post.

Wouldn't terrorists playing MMOs be a bit of a waste of time for them... unless they want to crash the servers, effectively shutting them down forever and making 10 million WoW addicts commit mass suicide.

[end sarcasm]

I think that the whole terrorists in online games thing is a bit BS tbh.

Im pretty sure i never used the word "play" I was just merely making a point that if one so intended to discuss things that they normally couldnt it would make a good place. Jeezz you are reading too much into what i say.
