I despise doing this so much, because every time I do this, there's always a big chunk of my wallet missing.

My computer that I've been using to play FFXI is roughly about... 4 to 5 years old or so. Of course by computer standards, that's "obsolete".

I haven't been on FFXI the past few days because I've been trying to bring my computer up to speed.

Two years ago, I bought a 256MB AGP-type Video card... To play FFXI with. FFXI couldn't have looked greater... Same goes for my other games like "Halo"... "Unreal Tournament"... etc etc...

Of course, after about 4 months of using it, it broke-- Well, not so much it broke, but it burned out. All the card had on it was a heatsink; no fan on it. That's probably why whenever I smell it, it smells like something caught on fire, hahaha!

So it wasn't until a few days ago, I go to my favorite electronics store... "Fry's Electronics" in Burbank, CA... I'm trying to get a new card... Only to find that times have appeared to change. I bought a card, and forgot to read the label... When I got home, I tried to fit my video card into my Computer's PCI slot... It wouldn't fit... Why? Because it was for "PCI-Express" slots...

"PCI-Express"? When the hell did they start doin' that? It used to be just AGP and PCI... All I wanted was to update my graphics so FFXI would look kick-ass when I play it...

So I ended up having to return the video card... And having to buy a brand new, up-to-date Motherboard... Ugghhh... That's about $200+ out of my pocket...

Then I needed to buy a CPU... That's another $160 out of my pocket... God damn it, all I wanted to do is update my graphics to play FFXI...

Now I need to return the CPU because the store gave me the wrong socket-type, so it can't fit in my Motherboard...

...Then I'm going to have to spend $200+ on another card... Then RAM... Then I'm probably gonna have to get a new tower as well...

...

So basically, that's why I'm not there. My wallet is being gradually sucked dry.

Fry's Electronics casts Drain on Devifoxx's Wallet.

Hopefully, I'll be back within the next few days, and my PC will be more powerful than before...

...

But I still hate having to do this kind of shit... You know, about how when you want to do something simple, you have to do several difficult things to get to it...

Any of you have an experience(s) like that?

Would'nt it be cheaper just to buy a new computer?

I'm just asking, I have absolutely no idea of prices in the computer inudstry right now, have'nt open mine in over a year (.... since getting FFXI on PS2).

I feel your pain as i just did the same thing....just not to that extent.

I only had 256mb of ram at the time and figured i better upgrade because my framerates were horrible. This is where it went downhill. I found out I was running RDRAM (stupid Dell) and it was going to be $270 for another 256 mb O.o so i began shopping around and figured it would be cheaper to replace the mobo and ram for around $170.

Got the new mobo, ordered the ram and decided to put the new mobo in to find out it wouldn't fit in my current case (stupid stupid Dell). So I order my new case, get my ram, install everything, boot up and see....a BSOD ><.

So after many days of frustration and hatred for Dell I finally get FFXI running again and i gained....3 fps. 3.

Kryton gives up, confused.

Would be cheaper to build your own, which you are basically doing. If you have an AGP or regular PCI slot man, all you had to do is buy a AGP or PCI video card, you can still get kick ass graphics with them. No need to go all out if you don't want to..

On another note..omg, in a few months I'll have enough money to make a pimp ass computer, I'm going full blown, the cpu alone will be 800+ bucks I had my eye on it for a while. Been

FFXI cost me just under $1000 in upgrades.

I think this is why I haven't quit yet. I feel guilty over having spent so much money on it, I need to suck some more enjoyment out of it.

FFXI really is a fickle little bitch when it comes to performance. If it weren't such an ass backwards PS2 port, you wouldn't need to drown it in as much money to get it to perform as well as it /should/ otherwise.

On a side note, has anyone ever gotten more than 30 FPS out of this game?

Kinda like this one time that I wanted to read a scroll of utsusemi: ichi. First, I had to go to Giddeus...

www.tigerdirect.com is my personal fav, not only cause I get discounted prices from ordering through my job, but its fast, and has real good waranties :)

THe general rule of thumb I follow whenever buying computer equiment is to "never buy top-of-the-line" unless I have a current need for it. And if my current needs will not change for the next six months then I buy the cheapest alternative available. Why? Top of the line is usually outlandishly priced, and 6 months away that same piece of equipment will most likely be outdated, discounted beyond belief, or simply outpazed from use (meaning useless by current standards).

That being said, I still from time to time break all the rules when I see something too cool to pass up

I am to lazy to read the post so I'll just say I got a 2,700 USD Dell XPS alptop for my Birthday.
/joy

IMHO, building a pc is tons better than buying one already together. even if it is an alienware or whatever. when you build, you can go as high as you want or as low as u want and at times it MIGHT be cheaper...depends on what you get for it. vid card is mostly what will jump the price up. for top of the line nvidia card, its 500+ bucks...possibly cheaper at frys

:(

I to feel the pain, I been running my athalon fx 64 for about a month now and it will give you orgasims how fast it moves, well all good things come to an end........ this past tuesday i was tooling around on the net and bam!!!! my comp just shuts off! im like wtf!!! then thiers that well knowen smell of burning plastic, i pop her open and thiers this stinky mess! i pull off all the chip coolers and find out that my cpu and mobo chip set were black as night! come to find out, thier was a chunk of whatever it was blocking the outbound tube coming out of the pump so no fresh collant wasent getting thier :( so 1250 ish $$ later from tigerdirect i get my new chip and board and i was all happy when i put the stuff in last night TILL i tripped over my keyboard wire and broke my keyboard XD so after work today its another 9.99 to get it working lol

I used to love TCWO until they shut down, I used newegg until one of my old teachers told me he had a student who started his own company that does the same, and could get me raw warehouse deals. ^^
