Maybe I'm oversimplifying this but I would take away permissions for anyone to Edit comments...when you make a comment on someone you shouldn't be using it as a potshot against them and therefore not having permission to edit would discourage against posting unwanted material. Making the flamebaits available to the public as well would be a good idea, not to say Mods can't speak out that so and so has done xxx.

But I don't see a reason why not to as other things can be referenced and quoted in threads themselves

The flamebaiter in question can request permission from the person in the profile to edit the comment made, this forces the flamebaiter and user to reach some sort of agreement which will result in three things generally.

A. The comment left does not offend the user

B. The comment does offend the user and the user allows the flamebaiter to edit it.

C. "..............................................................." does not allow the flamebaiter to edit it and reports it.

As long as someone does not spam the shit out of you with unwanted messages i am cool with no moderation really. I had a run in with something along this line and Mods just deleted the message and i am fine with that.

Since the delete command is winning by so much, is it possible to make it a clean delete rather than leaving the information behind?

Example below:

I can look into this and I'll speak to Reeve about it. There could be a hack out there that would allow this. If anything, we could always have an administrator permanently delete it from the database, but that always makes my stomach queezy.

Yea, I was just thinking if it is a true spamming issue, deleting the messages doesn't take it away, just the message not the actual spam. The way I was thinking of it was leaving remnants behind of all your spam emails that come through, it kind of defeats the purpose if you still have to scroll through them.

There's gotta be something in the code that will allow it so users can't see that note...will just take some investigative research~!

Is there a way that to only have friends be able to view or leave you a message?

Whenever, was just thinking while we're buffing it up might as well make it look ok :D

I'd like to bump this. The poll closes on Friday and that is when a decision will be made and enforced. At this point it seems that we'll be relaxing the rules in visitor messages since they are deletable by the users. That does not mean that you can go around to other people's boxes and flame a different user, and scenarios like that will be handled accordingly.

Maybe there should be a minor infraction if people leave totally unwanted and bad messages... Not anything major though you know?

If it gets out of hand content wise, or in frequency (i.e. someone is harassing you via visitor messages) we'll get 'em.

Not in the fun way either.

I really don't think this is anything anyone will have to worry about. Has it been a problem thus far? Cause I've yet to see it. Everyone's acting like the trolls are gonna start trolling VM pages or something. I'm not sayin you guys are dumb for preparing for it, I'm just saying I don't think this whole issue will be a big problem. ...at least, not yet.

Funny how harassment will be punished when it's done through visitor messages - visitor messages which can be deleted. Yet, in other cases of harassment, the ones being harassed were more or less told to deal with it even when the remarks could not be deleted or the harasser could not be ignored. Please make a decision on how you guys are going to handle harassment and stick with it; either punish it accordingly or tell everyone they're on their own no matter which method is being used for the harassment.

Feel free to provide sufficient evidence of harassment regarding someone. If it's in the flameboard then it's kind of hard to enforce harassment ya know...

We used to get a fair share of reported visitor messages, which sparked us to make this thread. With such an overwhelming vote, we have been going off of the vote, even though it isn't finished yet. So far we have just been telling people to delete the comment and move on. If someone is continuing to post unwelcome messages, report it and explain it to us. Be detailed with things that are wrong with the message. "X user, 'nuff said" or "Y user, need i say more" are not helpful. This goes for all reports, though.

This is also very important. If you just cry foul about things it doesn't do us a whole lot of good. We can only see so many posts in so many sections and we don't always know what posts you are talking about. Please use the features the site gives you, to help us make the site better for everyone.

Sorry, it wasn't a thread exactly, similar to how visitor messages aren't threads. Now, this may come off as confusing, but it's a SS in a flameboard thread. It's about the screenshot and not the post/topic/thread/w/e. The mod team is/was fully aware of it happening (for all I know it probably stopped), but the unanimous response was "deal with it" (paraphrased). I just don't see why you would punish a harasser posting something that can be easily deleted by the one being harassed (harassment in visitor messages), and flat out refuse to do anything about harassment in a place where the only person who gets to see the vulgarities is the one being harassed, and they can't get rid of them.

Now, I regret posting my previous post since afterwards I reread the OP and the line "civil discussion" because I fear this is going to turn into another one of those "group of people v. one single person and the few random people that support said single person" threads.

Going to reiterate two quick points before you click the following link:
1. I don't know if this is still going on or not, it doesn't really affect me. It was me calling out some hypocrisy (again, after reading the OP, I apologize for breaking the civil discussion rule).
2. This is a link to a FB post, but the post is not the problem. I just want to make sure that is fully understood before I get a response saying "FB isn't moderated". This is about the picture in the post which was acknowledged to be non-fabricated by mods/admin.

The post containing the pic:
http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/showpost.php?p=894746&postcount=74

The reasoning why no actions were taken against the harasser:
http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/showthread.php?t=59871

I accept this, but if people start harassing in visitor messages, whether the messages are voted to be deletable or not, I don't see why you would now start punishing people for harassment. I'm just asking you guys to please make up your minds here.

Okay, that does clear up a few things. That was ridiculous to be honest. I'm hoping that we did go back and take action on the rep ups to be honest. That was a harsh time since there was so much commotion going on. I will say this now, comments like that are not kosher. This will have to be a different discussion after the visitor messages. Normally I'd try to take on a few issues at once, but I want to get them fully cleared up before I move onto something. Please don't think that reputation has been looked over.

So the poll is closed and we can move on now. It is clear that people would rather have the ability to edit and delete. So we won't act on reported visitor messages as we have normal posts. However, constant harassment can be viewed as punishable.

Regards,

Mir
