For Dark and Light, you don't really need their HQ. But for the other Elemental Staff, I'd recommend you get their HQ version is you have the gil to spare. They give +15% instead of +10% to spells of their elements. And if you're a SMN, you'll eventually want all the HQ staffs.

I'd say get all of them eventually. They increase the potency of all the spells of their elements. But first is Dark, then Ice, then Light. Then the rest up to you ^^ my 2 cents.

I use the equip command before casting the spell. You'll still be casting the spell but you will not see any animation except the final one. Sometimes if you're not paying attention, you might think you didn't cast it. It takes a while to get used to it ^^
