A question for Goldsmiths.

Theorist, a quick qestion, I'm at 28 now, so I should whip up Harishin? tha'ts just a copper and a silver + fire yes?

I know this sounds bad, but all I want is lvl 48 =P

That's what I am aiming for, 48. But I may just go ahead and cap Gold Ingots at 51 to be done with it.

Figuring on 12 total synths

Silver Ring
Yield = 1
2x Silver Ingots - 2x Stacks 50k
1x Fire Crystal - Stack 2.5k
Total Cost = 52.5k
Yield per 12 synths = 12 Rings
Sale Price at Jeuno AH - 1k x 12 = 12k
Net Loss = 40.5k / 12 = 3.38k loss per synth
Not figuring in breaks

Hiraishin
Yield = 33
1x Copper Ingot - Stack 5k
1x Silver Ingot - Stack 25k
1x Fire Crystal - Stack 2.5k
Total cost = 32.5k
Yield per 12 synths = 4 stacks
Sale price at Jeuno AH - 5.2k x 4 = 20.8k
Net Loss = 11.7k / 4 = 0.975k loss per synth
Not figuring in breaks

Much better than Silver Rings, so yeah - hook that up. 8) Cap it at 31 and start Mythril Ingots with beast coins. The first level will be painful but you can break even on Mythril Ingots pretty easily after you hit GS32

I am sure you know, but to others that may read this: ALWAYS use Adv Image Support in the respective guild. This insanely applies to goldsmithing as a single break can cost 10k in early levels, 30k in gold ingot levels, and 80k+ past Gold Ingots. The only time I let Adv Imaging drop is if I am on my last 2 levels before the cap.

I have 15 goldsmith for basically free, actually made a bit of money on the side.

The trick for goldsmithing is frankly (and this probably holds true for any craft) dont power level it.

use a wind crystal on a flint stone for flint arrowheads

desynth yagudo necklaces (lightning crystal)you get in giddeus for copper ingots or buy copper ores froma vendor for 9gil.(fire crystal)

use a wind crystal on the ingot to get a hairpin.

3 copper ores + a zinc ore make a brass ingot. farm the zinc or mine it, (worms in quifm are good for this)

when ingots stop skilling you use a fire crystal on that for a brass sheet

you can make brass scales now but its crappy, 3 brass sheets +fire makes a brass flowerpot do this.

oh dear silver time!

4 silver coin make a silver ingot which goes for 25k a stack. The trick here is to level thf and steal like crazy. Gobbies outside yuhtungha are good for this if you feel nice, also in the 3 areas outside jeuno.

This is where i am at ^^; so yeah totally low and i know i should have saved my silver ingots to make hairpins out of but i know ive brought in over 200k just from making ingots whenever i happen to have a few coins on me.

oh yes one more trick for any craft. Never sell crystals you know you will need. As a goldsmith i keep 1 stack of fire in the moghouse at all times. Its very convienent especially when you know the market for crystals can get screwy.

Everything i said has to be done over time. Its taken me a year to get 15 goldsmith but it was actually profitable the entire time. If i never level goldsmith past whatever silver ingot caps at i have unlimited silver ingot making capability as long as i farm my own coin.

this wont hold true for higher level stuff obviously, and unless your actual main is thf its very difficult to steal gold coins. But as a drk/thf i farm mythril for spare change even though i cant craft them yet. so it is possible to get to 20 goldsmith for free if you take your time instead of trying to power the craft.

If I remember we had someone in the old HQ LS that was high 60's... I think it was Mrsqq... she's one of Quetzal's resident high goldsmiths so ask her :P

All I know are the horror stories. And from what it looks like you won't be making millions till you're in the high 90s and HQ'ing lvl 70 rings. Everything below that appears to just be average profits and gains.

Gold smith 31 now... my next target is mithrill ingots and it ain't cheap at all... I go usually to davoi or something to steal those coins although its a pain in the arse since I do not own any high level thief which helps greatly in that department.

Mythril coins goes usually around 16k per stack and you use 4 of them to make one -_-; so thats a nice 48k per one stack of ingots! Usually takes about 2hours to get a full stack of mythril coins. I need to get my gold smith to 40 or 50 in order to progress Cloth craft (yes cloth needs gold smith sub...). 300k? Well that will poof in a matter of hours. Trust me it won't last that long and one break is a huge loss.

That's 66.5k a stack of ingots including crystals ^^ But still profitable yes. Going rate for mythril ingot stack is 70k+

i found that while exping (on THF) you can net a good bit of Mythrill coins. starting when you head to altep, in the 40's by the outpost just know which mobs you can yank coins from, insted of say...a crossbow bolt.

Well well well... I apologize in advance if someone already posted something like this here, I stopped reading the tread at the 6-7th message. My understanding is that there are a lot of people here who are asking the same question that everybody who plays FFXI is asking:

HOW CAN I MAKE 1 MILLION GILS IN 1 HOUR?

Well guess what, YOU CAN'T!

Now, calm down, don't get mad at me for telling the truth. There is simply NO craft better than the other to make quick gils. Why? Why then have other crafts? Everybody would just rush into one, leaving the other crafts with absolutely no adept.

I know what you are asking your self right now: Please, please Veresko, our crafting god, tell us how can we choose our crafts? lol Well my little firends, it's entirely up to you. But, there are some things that can help you choose a craft. For exemple, what are the ressources near you and that are easy to get? I am from Bastok, naturaly I started Smithing cause it's easy to get the ores you need to level the craft.

Secondly, look at the guilds that are close to you. Duh, I knew that you're thinking, well I did see some people shouting how to start woodworking in Bastok. Have you been outside, see any trees around here? Here's your answer. Guilds will provide you with all the help and most of the material you need.

Now, your job is also an important factor to consider when choosing a skill. Again, seeing a WHM trying to level smithing always has me smile. Yes, you can sell the items you make, but there is little profit to make there, thrust me (unless you read this till the end, then I'll tell you how to make profit). But, there is also the money you save to consider. When my WAR was ready for the chain armor set, I took my pickaxe, went mining for my ores, used the fire crystal I had accumulated while leveling and make my own set for about 10K (if I remember correctly) So, try picking a skill that you will be able to use the results. I am mainly an alchemist, so being the tank in a party with 15 Hi-Potions that costed me less than 1K to make (each) certainly makes the life of the WHM a lot easier.

Picked one yet? Thought so, take your time. Now, to answer the ultimate question, HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY QUICKLY? Again, YOU CAN'T! Ah, thought this was getting somewhere did'nt you! I am just kidding, you can make money, just not as quickly as you would like I am sure. So far, I have really put a lot of time in Smithing and Alchemy, but I am assuming that's it's the same thing for every crafts. TWO SIMPLE RULES:

Don't shop at the guild! (Alchemy is the worst)
Don't shop at AH (You'll have no hair left after one night)

 What?

Calm down! Again, it takes time to make money. Go farm the ingredient that you need. I leveled my THF to 17 just for that. For smithing, go mine you're own ores. It's boring, I know, but when you will sell that stacks of 12 Iron Ingots for 40K (or is it 30K now?) that costed you about 10K to make, you'll be laughing your ass all the way to the AH.

Also, shop around! Prices differs from one shop to the other, even worst then you think. Take the GunPowder Room in Metalwork. Two people there selling bombash, next to one another. First one sells it 595 and the other 463. Two of those, Sulfur at 703 and Earth crystal gives you 2 Jar of Firesand... for a net cost of about 850 a jar. How much to they sell those at the Alchemy guild? Over 3K for crying loud! So, SHOP!!! Takes time, but it will save you some money!

Now, I am sure you already knew all of this, but I really had some time to loose. Seriously, there is no magic trick, no quick way to get rich with crafting. But by shopping and getting your own material, you can make decent money, plus have a lot of fun doing it. Quick example, Hi-Ether. Farming the bat wings and shopping for the rest of the material makes producing these cost me about 1,2K and they sell for 2,8K. Nice margin, but I spend 2 hours getting 4 stacks of wings to make 12 potions.

So, I hope that helps, (or not, if you decided to chose alchemy, I hate competition! lol) One last time, GO GET YOUR OWN MATERIAL YOU LAZY ASS! lol This is the only way to make money with crafting.

Pssst.... but I have found a few recipe that will sell at merchands with a slight profit, while getting your material at the same merchand. You could do this all week and end up with 500K, but your boss would probably fire you when you get back the next monday for not showing up at work.

Up to you to find these, quick hint, it starts and end with a letter between a and z! Good luck!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING STILL READING THIS!!!!! GET UP AND FARM DANG IT!!!!!

HOW CAN I MAKE 1 MILLION GILS IN 1 HOUR?
A level 100 GS can do it easily. In much less than an hour too. Selling the items so you can have the gil in pocket would take awhile I'd imagine, but you can synth 1 million profit pretty easily at 100 gs.

Also, farming you materials is almost never worth it. Make gil the quickest way you can and buy your material. If farming your material is the easiest way for you to make gil, then good. But taking an hour to mine up 5k worth of materials when you could farm for 15k is pretty f'n stupid.

Well, then I guess I am wrong, it is easy to make 1 Million gils an hour. And to say I have been loosing my time with Alchemy......

2) Also, farming you materials is almost never worth it. Make gil the quickest way you can and buy your material.

So, in order to make gils quick, I first have to make gils the quickest possible way and then buy my stuff from AH? Then what? I use a 10K Mythril sword, turn them Holy with Holy water and sell it back for 9K? Oh, I get it, you make gils quick BEFORE actually buying my material!!! But, how do I make quick gils I wonder........
3) But taking an hour to mine up 5k worth of materials when you could farm for 15k is pretty f'n stupid.

Agreed.... but the question again was how to make gils with a craft! As I said in my lenghty post, get the material YOURSELF FOR THE CRAFT YOU ARE DOING! If your goal is to make money only, then I am sure there are plenty of farming areas that will suit your needs. But if you want to craft your way to ultimate money, no way you can do it buying your stuff at AH, thrust me, tried everything!

Elemental Staves don't produce much of a profit anymore. If you calculate the loss per synth if you don't HQ (which can be quite a bit)... when you do get the odd HQ is just makes up for all the losses from not HQ'ing.

Elemental staves NEVER made a profit unless you HQ'd them. In fact there are very few things that make a real profit unless you HQ them.

The best use of a craft is to enhance your farming/mining/harvesting/logging time. Pick a craft that suits what you do for money. Then pick a material used in a low level synth, raise your craft 30+ above it, and HQ it as you find it.

Like Harvesting Giddeus. Raise your Clothcraft to 33 and synth all the Moko Grass you find into Grass Cloth and get quite a few HQs along the way. You can raise your gil/hour 5-10k this way.

Seriously, in most cases, farming your own materials to level a craft is like spinning your wheels in the mud. Sure, you slightly increase your own craft skill, but you actually make less money in this time.

I mean the losses on the normal synths of Staves is a lot more then it used to be. There used to be a time when the Bead was the same price as the normal synth (which means you lost about 5k from the lumber and crystal if you dont HQ).

But now you lose a lot more because the beads are quite a bit more then the staves.

well, what about bonecrafting? does that take long to lvl or is it expensive to lvl? i jus want a pair of shades ^^

bump.....

cheap and easy... most stuff up to Lv20 can be NPC'd for profit or break even. After that you sell almost everything up to Lv60 back to AH for small loss, break even or small profit. Or sell to NPC for medium loss.

/sigh

You're not making gil with a craft. You're making gil farming your items, then losing gil by crafting it into something worth less than the raw materials. In that case, it's always better to make gil the easiest way you can and then buy your items off the AH. It about the opportunity cost, and if you don't understand it, oh well.

I agree completly here, I mine alot, and I've been trying to raise Goldsmithing since I've been getting colored rocks recently.

Here's something no one has mentioned though, CHECK BAZAAR'S! You'll be suprised how much gil you can save if you look around for just a little while. I remember in Bastok someone was selling Iron Ore's for 350, don't know why, but I didn't care, I bought a shitload, made them into ingots, skilled up a little, and sold them for profit. Chances are you won't get very lucky unless your higher level and can HQ some stuff or find something to skill up on, but its a resource I think people tend to overlook too often.

Anyway, good luck with all your crafting! :)

Goldsmithing is extremely expensive and draining my gil like no other. I'm currently level 66, and will remain as level 66 for a while since I have to save up on gils again. If Platinum Earrings/Ring sell, I'll probably get back 3-4 million but that won't happen for quite sometime.

Goldsmithing is cheap until you have to make Gold Ingots. At level 66, I'm still not getting enough HQ to cover my cost so I still use cooking/gardening to earn gils. Growing your own nuggets also help.

Don't worry about me, I understand it completly! Again, question was HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH CRAFTING! If you wanna buy your material of AH and turn them into items worth less then your cost, be my guest!

/wave goodbye with pockets overflowing with cash made from crafting

Obviously you don't. You aren't making money in most instances on crafting unless you can HQ. So a question: are you really making money crafting if you waste time farming for materials when you could be making more money doing something else?

If you want to mislead everyone by saying you can make money while crafting by farming your own items, fine - but it's shortsighted because time = money. I will correct you by saying you make less money than by doing other things. You may say you save 6k by farming your own bat wings, when in actuality - you don't save a dime because those batwings are still getting sold one way or another. And then there is a fact that the other materials might draw into your profits on the synth, as to make the batwings you used worth less money than if you flat out sold them as is. And also the fact that you are farming a less optimal place for that one item and making less gil/hour. And you are still farming to get the materials. One of the big draws into crafting is to get away from resource gathering. But that won't happen for a very very long time. It starts to happen when your chosen craft gets to a point that you can consistently HQ low level items to supplement resource gathering. Why not farm at an optimal place, make more money than you could farming synth materials - use that "more" money to raise your craft to a level where you can HQ items. THAT is where the real profit is in crafting --> H-muthafakkn-Q

The entire AH is based on HQ. You may find some exceptions here and there, but lets face it - there is no real consistent money in low level crafting. It's best to raise crafting as fast as possible, while keeping costs down of course, and get to a point where you can HQ and actually produce real profits. You are operating on a Net Loss compared to what you could be making.

Taruwaru is right. It's all about Opportunity Cost. What is the best use of your time?

Our suggested path isn't right for everyone - but I wanted to point out that it is better in the long run. Not to brag, but I am close to being a sustained Millionaire in this game - meaning I won't ever be below 1 million in my pocket at any time. And I started this game in in May and I am only level 51 so I can't even get at the high profit farming areas yet.

There are 3 phases of personal economics in this game that I see.

1) Resource Gathering - BCNMs, Farming, Mining, etc. You want to pick a place that can give you at least 20k/hour in various resources. Then sell those on the AH to fund low level skillups on a craft. If you can work your synth materials into optimal gathering, then that's great. But pay attention to your overall profit on the synth, as the cost of the other items might still eat into the sale price of your farmed material.

2) Craft Supplement - HQing low level synths to supplement Resource Gathering. The best way to do this is to HQ a material that you already gather at your optimal resource gathering area. There may also be a few other synths that you could HQ into a profit. Basically, the idea here is to gather resources, enhance a few materials you gather by HQing it into another item, and then taking that money and cycling it through other HQ items to further enhance it. Basically, make 30k/hour, enhance that to 35k/hour by HQing - then spend all that money on another HQ item to enhance it further, basically turning that 35k/hour into 45-50k/hour. Then use that money to raise your craft even more. This puts you on an upward spiral for gil.

3) High level and HQ Crafting - this is where you can finally say goodbye to 90% of resource gathering and say hello to hundred thousand or million dollar synths and wide profit margins on consumables. This is where Opportunity Cost dictates you can make more money synthing items than if you could go out and make 30-40k/hour gathering resources. This takes quite some time to attain but this is my current goal. I am currently into the latter stages of phase 2.

Aaaah... this is turning out to be one of those neverending tread, but at least I am trying to stay polite. I'm not gonna add anyhting else but this:

1) Your approach to synth and crafting makes sense and I never said otherwise. Of course craftin HQ items gives you more profit!

2) You think my method does not work and I am broke? Fine, believe what you want, to be honest I don't give a damn. I am not a millionaire like you are, but I am making more then enough gils to sustain my character and buy the equipment I need when I need it.

3) Finally, the tread originally started with the question What craftskill to choose to make money... when someone asks that question, I am assuming they are not level 50 in any of them!!!! When you start a craft, gathering your material will at least make it profitable until you can do those HQ items on a consistant basis.

Now, if you wanna make fun of me and discredit what I am posting by saying I am misleading everybody, just go ahead, I don't care. I am sharing my experience and the way I raised my skills, that's all. Good for you if your method works best for you, I like mine!

End of discussion for me! Wanted to help but obviously you don't need it, so good luck in your path to becoming an overnight millionaire to everyone starting crafts!

/em furious
