1 in 4 young adults has used a hookah...

I have heard of a whole new urban culture smoking flavored tobaccos.

In my experience, hookahs in the States are largely the domain of the painfully pretentious.

My sister has one...

My Dad bought a couple really nice Turkish ones back in the early 60's when he was stationed there the first time. He had them sitting on the top and at each end of his entertainment center. I grew up looking at them every day.

I've never used a hookah, altho it looks interesting........

He wasn't a hookah! He was a high-priced escort, and I needed him to lift my luggage! /rimshot

Strange story. It may not be legal to smoke in most places, but at least cigarettes are portable. Carting these contraptions around doesn't that great to me.

Meh there are quite a few cafes here you can buy and smoke at.

... i have ... 3 ... dont smoke anything else anymore either... started sometime around 2002. Big fan... and although i have 3 i only smoke like one day a week.

There's a hookah bar in our downtown area here, and with few notable exceptions, you're right.

Although, as I told Stine the other night, it would be awesome to grab one, take a puff, and say "Whoooo are youuuu?" a la Lewis Carroll-caterpillar....

That right there is why I smoke a hookah, makes me feel like a caterpillar.

a friend of mine has one, hit it a couple times with both weed and flavored tobacco, i see why people smoke em, they make the hit VERY smooth, and the flavored tobacco actaully taste very good. plus the cool bubbly sound when you hit em XD

usually only good for when theres groups of people smoking, and when you have alot to smoke, because the bowl piece on em is very large, takes a large amount of tobacco/weed to pack, and tends to burn it up very quickly, nice on occasion but i wouldn't buy one myself. for bud I prefer a vaporizer =)

They are becoming really popular in college towns. Gainesville had like 4-5 places that I can name off the top of my head really close to campus (Hookah Hut 4tw) and around U of South Florida's campus there are several as well. Some are a rip off, but generally can find decent deals and I enjoy going every now and then. Its fun to go with a few friends and just pass it around for hours. Most of the places are pretty chill and relaxed environments, no idea about this pretentious shit you are talking about.

Oh and I don't smoke cigarettes. I actually tried a hookah years before I ever tried a cigarette. I fucking hate them lol, I see the two as completely different.

First time I ever hit a hookah was in Amsterdam Holland in 1980 when I was 14 years old. I was living in Germany at the time and I went there to play in a baseball tournament for a week. All the American kids were shacked up with Dutch families who's kids also played in the tournament. It was kind of like an exchange program. On our down time, the first place we all wanted to go to was the Red Light District and check out the hookers in the windows and the Dutch families knew this. That was the first time I was introduced to Hashish. Then in 1981, my family got stationed at Incirlik Turkey (My Dads second tour). I lived there for 2 years during my sophomore and junior years of high school and wound up frequenting a lot of hash dens. Turkish hash is the best. I'm glad I never got caught or I'd probably still be rotting away in a Turkish prison. lol

When I moved back to the states in '83, hookahs weren't really popular here. Only joints, bowls and bongs. All you young people are starting to catch up to us old farts.

This is how it all begins...

This is what everyone in my circle of friend use it for. We've been doing it for years.

There's plenty of coffee houses, clubs and bars that have them for this purpose as well. Only two of my friends smoke cigarettes, but we all still like to smoke these at parties. Its more social and can be done indoors (or outdoors at wintertime) as it doesn't smell nowhere as bad or strong as cigarettes.

And Princemercury, perhaps its different in the states or Canada, but I believe in Sweden way more than 1/4 has smoked it. Every single person I meet in Stockholm has smoked one at least once, and quite a lot of those smokes one frequently. So 1/4 smoking it for another purpose than weed etc. is not in the least surprising to me.
