108-3 girls basketball rout raises questions

By Cameron Smith

It's been called unsportsmanlike. It's been called ugly. The question now is whether Christian Heritage (Utah) High, which routed West Ridge (Utah) Academy, 108-3, in a girls basketball game last week, actually did anything wrong by blowing out an overwhelmed opponent.

The stunning scoreline -- from a varsity game in which Christian Heritage reportedly never used a full-court press -- nearly defies belief. As reported in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune, Christian Heritage scored 28 points per quarter for the first three periods and 24 in the fourth, providing a consistent average of nearly two baskets per minute across the entire game. The Crusaders shut out West Ridge (pictured above running on to the court for the team's game following the rout) for the first three quarters, and Christian Heritage starter Josi Rydin even racked up a unique triple-double, with exactly 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals.

"I don’t know why the score was that high, or what the point was," Jamie Keefer, West Ridge’s athletic director and a coach for the girls’ team, told the Salt Lake Tribune. "I don’t think it would’ve happened that way if it were the other way around."

Yet while Christian Heritage is a clear and obvious target for criticism, Crusaders coach Rob McGill has argued that he had little choice. According to ABC 4 News out of Salt Lake City, the program had just nine players available for both the varsity and junior varsity games against West Ridge, leaving the coach with little option when considering whether to pull out his starters early in the game.

And with his starters still in the game, McGill decided it would be more disrespectful to slow the ball down and pass around the perimeter than continuing to run the team's offense.

"I have been on the other side of this equation," McGill told ABC 4. "It was very insulting when teams slowed the ball down and just passed it around. That's why I'd rather have a team play me straight up, and that's why I played them straight up. Because I didn't want to taunt them, I didn't want to embarrass them, I didn't want them to think we could do whatever we want."

While Christian Heritage has already apologized for the lopsided scoreline and administrators at West Ridge have said the school harbors no ill will and has moved on from the incident, there are still lingering concerns about what could happen when the teams play again. The two are scheduled to play Feb. 3 for the second half of the schools' home-and-home league meetings.

Much of that concern comes from McGill's personal philosophy. The coach said he refuses to force his players to back down just because they have all but assured a victory, citing a desire to promote values that he feels are limited by contemporary culture.

"Too many people in the world right now allow the youth to not be as good as they can be, allow them to be lazy," said McGill. "Here, I'm giving them an opportunity to live up to the best of their abilities and be proud of what they're able to accomplish. If that's what I'm being blamed for, then OK, I accept it."

That "commitment to excellence" comes at a cost. In this case, it was the ego of teenage girls that was affected by the effective implementation of McGill's personal philosophy. Given that West Ridge is a school for at-risk youth, those egos in question may be even more fragile than most.

Of course, Christian Heritage is hardly the first school to come under fire for running up a huge scoreline against an overwhelmed opponent. Last year, Yates (Texas) High was roundly criticized for a 170-35 rout during its undefeated, 34-0 national title campaign. Like McGill, Yates coach Greg Wise has routinely been attacked for his penchant for pushing his team to score as many points as possible, regardless of the foe, a contention which was raised again this year when an opponent intentionally stopped trying to score just to keep Yates from scoring 100 points.

Christian Heritage certainly isn't being seen in that light ... yet. And now that the game is over and in the past, McGill seems to have a sense of just how his team's victory may have affected not just a team, but a school and community itself.

"Absolutely, I mean who wouldn't regret that?" McGill told ABC4 News.

Among the players on the game's losing end was West Ridge's Carli Perkins, a captain and the team's leading scorer.

"Sometimes the score doesn’t show everything. Sometimes all you can give is your fullest," Perkins told the Salt Lake Tribune of her team's struggles. "It’s really important to have sportsmanship. It makes basketball fun."

That type of noble reaction has clearly had an effect on McGill's players and Christian Heritage administrators.

"We're going to sit down with them and make sure they know how we feel," said Christian Heritage head of school Don Hopper. "We didn't mean to do anything to hurt them or upset them. It got away from us, and we're going to do things differently next time."

"I want to personally apologize to the team," said Crusaders co-captain Brittany Hurlbut. "To just say if we hurt any members of the team or the school, we sincerely apologize."

What you think??

The winning team had to apologized for trouncing the other team more than 100 points.

Just showing the High School, If you win and try hard YOUR BAD FOR DOING IT!

If you suck, you just suck. they shouldn't be Punished for winning. BOOOO!!!!

I have no patience for idiots who make this argument, if its NFL, NBA, NHL, high school or w/e, doesnt matter.

I'm sorry but learn to play or get over it. Its the other teams job to score points and its your job to stop them and score your own, if you cant do that, then suck it up, don't go crying about unsportsman like conduct, only one guilty of unsportsman like conduct here are the sore LOSERS!

If you ask me, if the other team had gone "ok this team sucks balls so lets stop scoring and let em feel good" that woulda been a BIGGER insult then completely trouncing them. Running up the score is the freakin point of the game.

Because I didn't want to taunt them, I didn't want to embarrass them, I didn't want them to think we could do whatever we want."
QFT

I wish the co-captain had added a BWHAHAHAHAHA to the end of that apology.

wheres tom hanks? someone needs to tell these girls, THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASKETBALL!

unless you win a national championship, then tears of joy are acceptable.

(actaully from the article it seems like it wasnt the players that are boohooing, more the coaches, fans, and sportswriters.)

It's womens basketball...

and........ are you saying womens basketball should be held to a different standard then mens? isn't that sexist?

being a woman isnt an excuse to be a crybaby if you get your ass kicked in a basketball game, i know plenty of women that are alot tougher then alot of men I know, and would call that other team crybabys.

AWWWWW, their ego's are hurt! Poor babies!
The statement represents what is wrong with the philosophy of many people. Instead of showing them that you need to work harder, and always strive to be better, and to persevere through the failures - we coddle them, chastise the victors, and tell them it's ok to be less than mediocre because we don't want to hurt their "egos". /sigh

But ... but ... their FEELINGS!

wow really? whaaaaaaaaaaaaa, like 13 yr olds on their redweek.

The idea behind any sport is to win and do so by playing with your team. If you have a good team that isn't about showboating and just stick to the logistics, like scoring, than you have a good team.

wtf is the complaining that is unsportsman-like to whomp their asses? Laughable complaint, just laughable. If they don't like getting their asses handed to them maybe they should try the same strategy. Score and score as often as possible.

I don't follow professional basketball because of how often there is scoring. I'm being quite honest, pro b-ball goes so fast I get bored of it, and that's fine. I still love to play the game (though being a *cough cough* smoker slows me down) I would never think to 'play around' rather than meet the objective.

foolish time wasters.

ahh reality is an egos worst enemy.

Edit:: and sorry if you thought i was "lashing out" >_> wasnt trying to really, I didn't see the sarcasm and thought lucki was hinting that I should take it easy on em lol

Fuck their feelings.

Yeah, that's my sentiment if you hadn't picked up on it. Honestly I used to play hockey, and near the end of the season we went up against an amazing team, and got owned (17-0). I think the worst thing we felt was disappointment. We certainly weren't expecting an apology.

QFT NBA are a bunch of over-payed overblown "super stars". NCAA all the way :D I think NCAA champions should play an NBA team every year, I think they'd give alot of "super stars" with multi-million dollar contracts a real reality check.

I think duke could wipe the floor with some NBA teams.

Then again I'm a bit biased, being in North Carolina NCAA basketball is a BIG deal here, what with Duke, UNC, NC state, and Wake, you'd spend less time naming the NCAA/acc championships that WEREN'T won by one of those 4 in the last 15 years. hell the last 30

I vowed to Stine to accept James's work if he does to the best of his abilities, but never to encourage him backing down or restricting himself simply because someone else's ego is in check. That breeds mediocrity of the worst kind.

Amen my brother! Nice twist on a Connery quote too! :p

The real thing to take away from this statement is this:

Basketball players always whine about doing their best; hockey players go home and fuck the prom queen.

LOL!!!

i think they should just say, "Hey we suck, Good game. We'll work hard next meet." But there couch did beach his 4 good player, cause they missed practices. He should be fired, i would be like "Hey we're down 30 points, you 4 go win this and we'll talk later." And then beach them later or something. The loser School couch just sucks and they shouldn't play till a new couch is hired..

Why the hell is this even an issue?

These people need to grow a spine and stop whining. You don't apologize for winning fair and square.

Women's basketball is just not entertaining to watch. Even if the teams are rivals, they usually fail to draw any type of meaningful crowd. More often than not it's low-scoring game with no real flashy plays.

I will say this though, women hoops fans seem to be much more loyal and supportive then men's hoops.

But anyway.

When I was a kid, we did this in soccer once. Absolutely destroyed the other team.

Our goalie had a goal.

Seriously, like 30-0 in a soccer game. Kid's soccer, mind you, which would probably have justified a mercy killing rule, but they let it play out, and nobody ever tried to tell us that we should feel bad about obliterating them.

Of course, I have a slightly different philosophy when it comes to gaming, but that's really an entirely different topic.

I coached a 10-11 year old girls soccer team this year. We weren't great - finished just over .500, but one game we played an awful team. We ended up trouncing them 8-0. Bear in mind we not only had NO subs, but we played the whole game with one less player than the other team. At the end of the third quarter, a parent from the other team pulled me aside and asked me to quit "running up the score". I had to explain to this guy that I had already put our best offensive player in goal, put two NINE year olds on the front line (both of which scored their only goals of the season btw), put our usual offense on defense and held em back, and we were down a player (to which he turned around, had to count out load, then walked away in a huff).

They just need to suck it up and realize they suck compared to those future butch-looking vagina licking lesbians...nappy headed ho's fine young athletes. Grow the fuck up.
