Skipped class to watch the ceremonies...all I have to say is wow.

Bill Buckner throws out the first pitch at Fenway, with tears in his eyes, to a standing ovation after a championship season. It gave me chills.

This thread is for all the die hard sox fans out there who shed a tear with me when they saw that.

That is all.

Go sox!

Wow, can't believe he's still crying after 22 years, he should let it go. Go Mets!

I'm a Tigers fan, so I got my eye on the game too.

Maybe now Sox fans will let Buckner get over it :( Steve Bartman is the new Buckner anyway

I wanna go visit Nationals Park, it looks beautiful ^^

Lol, are you serious?

He's not the one who should let it go, it's all the obnoxious Redsox fans who wouldn't let it go. I'm a die-hard Sox fan and I hate that he got crucified for that (albeit incredibly horrible) error, when they could have easily gone ahead and taken care of business in game 7.

I feel good about the sox this year, once we recuperate from the Japan trip I think we'll start off strong.

This is pretty much the right answer.

I was happy for Buckner. All these years later and he can finally show his face in Boston again. The error was absolutely one of the most fucked up sports follies of all time, but the man damned near had to change his name and move outta the country. That's a little extreme for a guy who had hall of fame credentials for the sox.

And yeah, let's not forget losing game 7 was a team effort too.

now...2008 repeat??? i'm thinking: yup :D

I knew it was the mass idiocy of the boston supporters who kept Buckner out of the public eye for all these years. GG boston for turning a border line HOFer and turning him into the Red Sox goat of the century.

I don't blame the fans, I blame the media. The Boston fans showed a ton of class giving him that ovation, and I'm sure that closure meant more to him than any of us could ever imagine.

The media, on the other hand (Namely: ESPN), use that highlight any time any other large error is made in any sport as a comparison, which is why it is stuck in all of our heads as one of the worst plays of all time.

On a positive note, Daisuke is looking strong, Manny is looking strong, and the Bullpen should be solid all year. Once Papi gets the bat going and Beckett gets back in the swing, the Sox will be right back on top of the division, where they belong. I actually think they are going to be better this year than last year if thats even possible. J.D. Drew should be much better, Pedroia and Ellsbury can only get better, Youkilis is very underrated for his value, and having two potential 20 game winners doesn't hurt.

Go Sox!

If you weren't at least 18-20 when this happened, you probably don't understand how bad the fans were. Just in talking to Boston fans (ages 40+), they consistently bring up Buckner when talking about their team.

For prospective, look at Bartman in Chicago. On PTI not too long ago they brought up Moises Alou forgiving Bartman, and Wilbon went on to say that he couldn't get over it, even though he knew it was wrong for Bartman to take the blame.

Wilbon is a fairly educated person, can you imagine what Joe Plumber thinks about Bartman?

Sure in 20 years, the people who were 5 or 6 when it happened will have forgiven him, but it doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of hatred directed that kids way now.

They also made a great point on PTI that if the Red Sox hadn't won 2 Championships in the last 4 years, this would have never happened. If the Cubbies could break the curse and win one, I bet Bartman could also be forgiven. The fact that Alou came out and said that he couldn't have caught the ball anyway depresses the severity of the issue, but it still doesn't help the man while he's walking down the street. The class that the Red Sox fans and organizations showed singled handedly turned Buckner from a scapegoat into a Red Sox hero, which is how he should be viewed seeing as how other than that one play he was a complete gentleman and an excellent baseball player.

I don't see any class at all. "hey we won two series, we'll let you off the hook. If we hadn't won, we'd still be bitter idiots."

I'm not trying to single out bosox fans, but its the way sports fans are a giant group of mindless drones that annoys. Just look at your rivals fans to see how they are treating one of the greatest players of our time.

Ugh, that still embarrasses me as a Cubs fan. I cannot believe how everyone acted when that all went down. Blowing up the ball? Using it in a pasta sauce? Idiotic.
