Wall of text, INCOMING!
I found myself whistling the Raiders of the Lost Arc theme (aka. Indiana Jones theme) a lot today at work. It was about the only thing I could do to keep myself from flipping out over how g'damn busy I was. I wasn't even able to get some paperwork completed (or started) that I really wanted to finish.
Basically today was a complete shit day at work and I hope I don't have another one of those days again for a very very long time if not ever. ><
Forgot to pick up my uniforms from the cleaners yesterday, so I wasn't in a real uniform.
Tried for a period of 4 hours last night to get help from the shift supervisor via phone (I was at home and by the time I realized I had forgotten about my uniforms it was too late to pick them up) in order to get a hold of my supervisor. I initially called at about 8:30pm talked to the supervisor. Things seemed hopeful, he said he'd get me the phone numbers so I could call my supervisor and inform him of my dilemma, but he'd have to call me back since he couldn't get them at the moment.
I waited.. occupied myself for about two hours. No calls. So I call back and ask to speak to him again. Well this time he's busy doing a outside perimeter check and can't answer the phone, so I'm told that he'll call me back as soon as he gets inside.
I wait again, another two hours pass by and no fucking phone call. So I call back. At this point it's god damn 12:30ish midnight. I have to wake the fuck up at 4-4:30ish in order to be at work in the morning at 6. I'm able to get a hold of him this time, and oooh, NOW he has the phone number to my supervisor for me. He says I should "Go ahead and give him a call now just to CYA (cover your ass), you know, just to be safe. Oh, and call back here around 5:30 if you haven't made contact with him." I kind of sigh and say thanks in a flat tone, and let him know I think it's a bit too late now. He says "Well he might still pick up the phone if you call." I'm thinking Yeah.. right.. not this damn late. Anyway I thank him, say bye and hang up. Give my supervisor number a ring and all I get is straight voicemail which means his phone is definitely turned off. I leave a message with my exhausted voice giving a brief explanation of my dilemma and my phone number asking him to call me back as soon as possible.
I then get in bed and pass the hell out. My alarm wakes me up at 4:00 and I consistantly slam the snooze button until 4:51 rolls around and I realize I turned my alarm off at some point. I get up and zoom to the shower and do all that morning routine stuff.
5:33 I give a call to work again, ask to speak to a supervisor and I get the same guy I spoke with last night since my supervisor isn't there yet. Explain that I haven't gotten a call yet and ask him to let my supervisors know about my situation and to have them give me a call."
At this point I knew I wasn't going to work in my normal uniform today, but I had already dressed in some black bdu's I had and wore a black shirt while wearing my sheriff's office windbreaker over that. I figured that that would be better than not showing up at all. But since I wasn't sure if I would be allowed to work while not in my actual uniform I wanted to wait until I got a call back from my supervisor to ask and make sure before I came to work dressed as I was. I got in my car, drove down to the dry cleaners to check and see when they opened, there wasn't a sign with hours listed but I was pretty sure they opened up around 8am. Went and got some Burger King breakfast food and then called work.
This time I finally got my supervisor, by this time it was like a little after 6am already. I figured I would end up being a little late, but hey.. I've been trying to resolve the situation and find out what the fuck to do since 8:30 pm last night. I tell him I can still come in, but that I just don't have my uniform, explain what I would wear and he says "Come on in, we need you." So I let him know I'm on my way, since I really was anyway. And then that's how I got to work.
Holy shit. I just totally went off a big rant. And that was only how my shitty day began.
At work, my post is one of the busiest posts in the entire jail. We house all the inmate workers, so it's a constant flux of inmates going in and out to work various jobs all day long and I have to keep track of it so our facility count isn't fucked up. We gained about 20 inmates in about an hour's period which probably doesn't sound like that much. But when it adds on top of all the work we (me and my partner, but mostly me) normally have to do it's just a huge pain in the ass that I hate dealing with. I couldn't log everything in the logbook exactly like I really should have.
We caught an inmate who was stealing from the commisary, thus even more paperwork was put on us to do because of that. He was stealing toothpaste of all things. In the middle of this was when we gained the huge amount of inmates to our post.
We had the evidence that was stolen on our counter. After we put all of the newcomers up into the dorms my partner happens to check the toothpaste boxes.. one of the boxes is empty where it was full a little bit ago. Which meant one of the inmates opened it and took the toothpaste evidence while we weren't looking. I pretty much had a good idea which m'fer took it. Went in to the dorm he was in and after searching his stuff, I found the toothpaste, put him in cuffs and was going to send him to lockdown. Well we let our supervisor know, and tell him we want to send this new guy to lockdown. He says naw, just write a DR (disciplinary report) and let him go for now. >< So, we uncuff him and put him back in the dorm. But I was too busy with other paperwork today to get around to doing the DR on him. So I'm kind of disappointed and pissed about that. He deserved to be written up, but I just didn't have the time to get that done without sacrificing a few other things I needed to do that were also important.
Sometimes I like my partner, he can be really great to work with. He can make the day a little bit more enjoyable because he's a kind of funny guy. But he also talks a lot on the phone, to his various hoes and family members, anybody. When he should be helping me out more. I tend to handle the majority of the paper work, but I also get up and run inmates around to where they're suppose to be, check on inmates and make sure they're following the rules and if they aren't I make sure they had better or else they get locked up. My partner, doesn't go in and enforce the rules unless I see something and point it out to him. Which, when I'm busy trying to get paperwork straight, is not something I want to be doing.
My partner likes to think he's a detective. And I guess he would actually make a pretty decent detective, if he was one. He's not, being a detective is not our job.. we have detectives and investigators for that. They get paid better money than we do to do their jobs, so quite frankly I'm all for letting them do their own thing. If I catch someone doing something they aren't suppose to do, that's one thing. But I sure as hell and not going to bother with baiting a trap, or creating a snitch so I can get the dirt on what's going on in order to figure out how to bust them. I have way too much other shit to do on a normal shift than to play that game. I try to keep things orderly, and look out for suspicious behavior when I can. And do what I can to make sure the facility operates in as smooth a fashion as I can help make it run. That's what I feel my job is. I don't make friends with inmates, I don't get buddy buddy. I go in with a "You're and Inmate, I'm and Officer" attitude and they know it. I might joke around or mess with a few that I've talked to on occasion, but they know I'm not their friend and that's the way I prefer it.
Sorry to drop this rant on you all again. I have to vent this somewhere and getting it out really did make me feel a little better. I hope some of you maybe even took the time to read the exploits of my day.
....LOL.. I'm sure the majority will likely just tl;dr it though. Which is fine. ^^; I don't post a lot.. but every now and then. A rant like this just comes along. Today really just pissed me off.
Again, sorry for the book I wrote about today.
