Apparently following their natural instinct to pick it up, open it to check what was inside was messing with it. When you're hired to cleanup roadways and find a knapsack, many people would think someone stole it and threw what they didn't want or find valuable aside, doesn't mean the person it belonged to would find what was left any less valuable.

Yea pretty stupid. Good thing is Labour Ready will still find them employment.

Or it was temporary work and they were let go because their positions were, you know, temporary...

I'd understand that, but it says in the article that wasn't the reason why they were let go =/

The way I'm understanding it, the "chewing out" process was separate from the process of them being let go.
I mean, they were hired to clean up during a parade. Parades usually don't go on for multiple days.

sounds like the typical management BS.

"I would not wish for them to pick up a backpack that has a bomb in it," she said. "I'm sure they didn't know what it was.", Stacey Burke, a spokeswoman for Labor Ready.
no shit lady. that's why they picked it up, to see what was inside. its nice to see that there are some people in this country that aren't prone to paranoia. i'm sure the members of the parade and their families are equally grateful.
