Honestly, how bad is it? I've heard at least 30-40% of all 360's are prone to getting the red ring within the first 6 months. I really want to get a 360, but not if I'd have to send it in every few months.

i don't think there are any official numbers, just horror stories. I've had a handful of friends whose 360s had to get sent in, but mine is still kicking.

lets see i had my 360 a year and 2 months now and i have never had a single problem except it ate my oblivion once. but i have never had any real problems with my 360. am i just lucky?

I think that peoples 360's dying, and where they keep it sitting, how long they play it and etc. are large factors.

#1 Not a good idea to keep the system in an area where it cant ventilate

ie. on the carpet, close in between the TV and a shelf, etc. Keep it in a somewhat open space and off the carpet.

#2 Dont play without giving it a rest, because the system can be stressed to a breaking point, like many others. I think its just that the 360, although much more powerful, is also much more fragile.

I can't keep my 360 running for more than three hours without it crashing. After a few minutes off, it starts back up again and every thing is fine. I've always found that kind of annoying, but it still works, so I shouldn't complain.

But I will.

Remember when things worked no matter what? Your NES would be acting up, and the best remedy was a good smack. You could pause a game, go to sleep, go to school for the day, and come back to find your game paused and waiting. My friends and I used to play three day long games of Monopoly on my NES.

My SNES fell down a flight of stairs and it still works, and I've been using it since I was in grade school.

I've had a cousin spill a plate of spaghetti all over his Genesis, with sauce oozing into the openings, and still spend the evening playing Sonic.

Shit, my GameCube has been dropped to the floor more times than I can count. Mother fucker is indestructible.

My brother's 360 crapped out after a few months of use. He had in on a little table next to his tv. He even had the cooling fan attachment thing. I don't think it's always conditions, I just think some of these things were poorly built.

And back to the playing it for too long thing, I'm sorry, but I think that's a load. The day after I got my ps3, I had it running for at least seven hours straight, and every thing was fine. (I'm not trying to start a dick measuring contest with the 360/ps3, I'm just sayin')

Those Nyko intercoolers suck ass. They have probably killed more systems than Microsoft has. I recommend just lying it down on its side and keeping it in a well ventilated area. I recommend that for any system really though, as I have my PS3, Wii and 360 all that way. Playing a system vertically just isn't too smart, especially the 360 where the laser is so close to the disc that a single movement of the system can literally burn a ring into the disc because the laser touches the disc.

Yeah, I don't have anything vertical either. The 'knock-over' risk is too great.

Two reasons there!

#1 Nintendo Consoles! Theyve always been very durable, no idea why lol. Ive done all those things as well. Smacked the NES, had my SNES fall off of the entertainment center several times (a lot of the shell was broken off), had my gamecube jerked off the desk because I tripped over the wires or something. Everything always still worked.

#2 Cartridge consoles are much more reliable than disc consoles, simple because... Well, their cartridges, and much more durable and long lasting

Also, Im not saying the remedies will help, but they are suggested, and can save your system

Eh, my xbox is still kicking...probably cause I never play it >.>

Kinda regret buying it, but hopefully halo 3 will change that. But yeah I'm guessing its because people are putting their 360's on carpet and such. I dont think I know any freinds that have sent it back, but everyone i know has had it freeze on them / other gay things. To sum it up... microsoft sucks.

Yeah, same here really. I played it a ton when Gears came out, and a little while for Lost Planet and Guitar Hero, but that is it. I honestly think I use it once or twice a month.

If shoddy hardware is unacceptable to you, do what I'm doing, and wait til they come up with the 65 nm chipset. I was disappointed that the elite didn't so we're going to have to wait til some later models churn out for a more stable Xbox. Luckily a price drop is sure to come with the new chip.

Yeah, I was hoping the elite would be a bit more durable, but I haven't heard of any difference besides the style and the 120gb.

All I can give you is my experiance with the system which I bought in the middle of January, I think. I've pulled off many 8-9 hour nights in a row (I usually spend this many hours every *weeknight* playing something) and never had it crash on me. When Lost Planet came out I remember playing from the time I got the game when Gamestop opened (10 A.M.) until the sun started peakin' up the next day. I've been this hard on my system from the day I got it until I dusted my WoW toons off a little over a month ago. In this time I've had absolutly no problems with my system. I even use it to watch movies while on my computer because my DVD disc drive on my system crapped out on me so it's still not gettin' a good break. Don't stand it up on its side though. I started gettin disc reading errors the day I got it, not sure if it was the system or the used games though, and setting it down right fixed it 100%. I did have the system eat a game of mine, like someone said above, but it was because of my own stupidity. When I did turn the system on its belly I assumed the disc wasn't still goin'... well, it was and it got pwnd. Luckily for me, it was only a cheap Xbox game.

In my opinion, more times than not, the damaging of a system come from an owner who doesn't know how to properly manage their items. Blaming a console company is a lot more appealing than realizing you fucked up. Then there is always a chance of patching gone wrong too, Guitar Hero II...

I'm predicting I'll own this machine for years to come and it'll still be in perfect condition when I retire it. You can't really believe most of the numbers people toss at you because of false claims. When my Gamecube broke, it was because of my carelessness during a move. I call a rep, bullshit them, send in my system, and a week later had either mine fixed or a refurbished one at my door. I broke it and they got a negative point for it. Same scenario here. It is fragile (casing seems weak and it just poorly "tied down") so be careful with it but if you're good to it, it'll be good to you.

While its true that shoddy care does indeed result in broken systems, alot of them do fail all on thier own, even with good care.

Also on the note, my is almost always on. Only times its not is when i'm moving it to a friends house to play it there, or when i'll be out of the house for more than a day. No problems, not even a slowdown or a failed loading. I know of no 360 thats been able to do that without overheating.

I've never had issues with my 360, except one lock up. I don't even remember what I was playing and what caused it to happen. The system just stopped in its tracks, causing me to get up and manually power off and back on since I could use my controller to do it. I keep it flat. As far as I'm concerned, vertical is just for marketing and it's not meant to be played that way. Like people drinking soda in extreme conditions and never spilling a drop in a commercial.

I don't know anyone personally who has had theirs die though.

If you're that concerned, get one of those 2 Year Replacement plans from Best Buy. If it breaks. You just walk in with it, and walk out with a new one. You can even exchange for a newer model, paying only the difference, if one comes out within the warranty duration.

I haven't had the slightest problem with my 360 and I have had it since release. I leave it on at night sometimes when im bazaaring in FF or just downloading movies and episodes from live. Only one of my friends xbox 360 died and was replaced for free. Maybe im lucky.

Edit: There was once I froze in dynamis but I don't know if that was Xbox360 or FFXI.

had my 360 for about a year now, NOT ONE PROBLEM. ive had red lights twice but thats because my cable came loose when i was messin with it, gave me a scare but otherwise fine.
besides....i modded my case and added parts and changed the heatsink to better stuff myself to make sure nothing would happen to it. Mine never gets hot, always cool.

I've had my 360 choke on a DVD. I tried it on my PS2 and it still skipped during that one scene. So, I'm convinced it's the DVD.

Anyway, my 360 sits next to my TV and a wall. So far it's not even made a squeek about it. Once it sounded like it was going to explode but I realized that I'd played it for about 5 hours straight so I set the controller down and went outside. >_>;

Other than the fact mine just died, i had no problems with it and it was a launch system. Also the just extended all the warranty's on new systems so you don't have to worry about it breaking any time soon after you get it.
