Whenever I close the tray I hear this grinding noise inside it, even if there isn't a disc in the tray. Obviously it won't read the discs.

This started happening after I checked it as baggage at the airport so I'm assuming something happened then.

Any ideas?

sounds like a tracking problem, either the tray is off track or the laser is. If it was checked as baggage, could have passed through a metal detector that could pull the laser off track. the only fix would be to manually put it back in place, otherwise use your warranty! because doing it yourself can void your warranty if you dont use the sticker trick

What is this sticker trick?

The only warranty I can remember being offered was for like 3 months from the Wal-Mart I bought it from, and this things going on almost a year old. So unless there's another warranty I'm not aware of lets assume I don't have one.

Microsoft changed warrantys on all xbox 360s to like 3 years, so youre covered.

it would take quite a bit of time to get the RROD even on purpose unless you opened it up and did it yourself. Especially with the systems 6 hour afk auto shutdown. the sticker trick is to either buy a sheet of warranty stickers, the littler silver one under the face plate. or, heat it up with a hair blower and carfefully lift it off before taking the system apart.
