3rd Hand smoke, Non-smokers there's just no way out.

I don't like the smell of seafood, it must be bad for me!

You know, I hope smoking does get banned all together for one reason. Working with smokers. I've had some terrible fucking luck with smoking coworkers in my life. Every one of them have taken an unnecessary amount of smoke breaks outside of their normal break time. And as a non-smoker, if I were to take the amount of short breaks they do, I'd have gotten fired. So yeah, I'm all for fucking them hard by making their vice illegal.

Yea, I really do find this practice to be completely unacceptable when I'm at work. Its one thing to use your break time, idc what you do then. But when I have to work that much harder to pick up someone's slack because of their constant cigarette breaks, its just a big load of bull shit.

BTW, just to be on topic...this is a pretty stupid theory. Its one thing to advocate no second hand smoke, but this is just a ridiculous claim that, while could be somewhat true is on such an insignificant scale that its just insulting to even consider it viable.

I actually take "smoke" breaks at work, even though I don't smoke. 8 years ago when my boss, at the time, caught onto the fact that I don't smoke they threatened me and I simply said "If you think you can pitch this unfair treatment to HR as a valid reason for me to be fired, please try." 8 years and 2 promotions later I still take the occasional "smoke" break.

That was the whole reason I took up smoking in the air force... friend of mine would go on smoke breaks and invite me to go with him, then the NCO's found out I didn't smoke and said "you can only go on smoke breaks if you smoke" when my friend went on his next smoke break I took up the habbit... <3 them 10 minute breaks every hour.

Indeed, me as well. Usually my day goes like this, if I am am busy, if I have enough work to keep me constantly occupied I MAY get out for a quick cigarette break aside from on my lunch hour. However, I usually take 5-10 puffs and kill it. Otherwise I may very well take 3 5 minutes breaks outside my lunch, and I am anal about it, I do watch the clock bc I don't feel like hearing anyone bitch to me about my breaks. I'm allowed a half-hour long break which is broken down to 2 fifteen minute breaks along with a lunch. I never have taken 2 separate 15 minute long breaks or a full half hour unless I had an errand to run. People will still point out the number of times I run out for a quick smoke but not pay attention to the actual amount of time I take all together.

I have in the past several years offered for non-smoking co-workers to come out with me for a break. Many do. MANY do. I have had co-workers that piped up "I should start smoking so I can take smoke breaks" at which I reply "why not take breaks, you need them too".

I guess I'm pretty considerate.. that's me, just how I am. I don't deserve people bitching at me about running out for a smoke break when I'm stressed, if they were stressed and needed to they could go for a walk. I have though been hearing snotty petty remarks from petty co-workers much older than myself for years. Personally, I'm pretty tired of it. I'm a considerate person, I think everyone deserves equal treatment, INCLUDING smokers. Stop abusing me damnit!! Whatever.

It's really the rude smokers and badly planned restaurants that ruin it for the responsible smokers. I've never smoked but I think that people should be allowed to smoke if they want to do it. I usually don't mind when my coworkers smoke, they can do it pretty much anywhere in the building since our boss smokes. The only problem I have is when they smoke in the bathroom and I really can't just jump up and get out of there sometimes.

I mostly go to restaurants that have smoking and non-smoking sections and usually I don't smell the smoke. There are a few that were not planned well that make you have to walk through a smoking section to get to the non-smoking section. I've worked in a couple of restaurants that did that and we'd have hostesses that would try to take a person with an oxygen tank through the smoking section to get to their table in non-smoking. Yes it's mainly that hostess's fault for that lovely decision, but I know that it irritated a lot of guests who don't require oxygen tanks and didn't say anything about it. Those people possibly didn't come back to the restaurant because of it.

The 3rd hand smoking thing is a little ridiculous unless you live in a place where someone smoked 3 packs a day in it. Most smokers that I know are very clean and won't even smoke in their own house so they don't stain the walls with it.

In one of my previous jobs, a coworker took up smoking just so she could get more breaks. They also put another person on whenever they had a smoker working so that the store would still be watched while that person took a smoke break. Meanwhile, I worked 8 hour shifts by myself (couldn't lock the doors because it was open 24/7) so I couldn't even use the restroom. Yes, I'm aware of the stupidity which is why I only worked there for a few months before quitting. And if you must know, it was a 7/11.

Actually happened at my last job too. I 'd get looked at funny if I went to get a quick cup of coffee (it was a resort so we had a full lunch room with tea/coffee etc. so it wasn't like I was leaving the building) but my coworker would take about 5-6 smoke breaks a day. He'd get back and sit right next to me, reeking of cigarettes. I actually had them put up a partition between us ... lol.

Only time I have ever taken smoke breaks was on a summer job when I painted houses. And everyone smokes when they do that. This kind of labor is kind of an exception just because the nature of the work and generally everyone who does it smokes, and usually we just smoked while on a ladder working.

I think smoke breaks are just unfair really. People should not have smoke breaks period, unless people who don't smoke get, I don't know, snack breaks or something.

Still I can't stand smoking nazis, people who are like "omg smoking stinks, you smell like smoke". Well, you know what, deal with it unless you have like an allergic reaction or we are in close quarters for an extended period of time. Not when I'm just sitting, minding my own business smoking. Do I openly complain about these people's holier than thou personality and go "omg you are so stuck up, you smell like you just took your thumb out of your ass". No, I don't, because I'm patient.

As far as third hand smoke goes, even if it is slightly dangerous - like most things have the propensity to be the whole idea of it sounds like a crusade which is mainly a waste of time and energy.

Like I said, I'm only allergic to the smoke. The smell on the persons clothes can kinda be stinky BUT there are worse smells. Like people who bathe in perfume or cologne before they leave their house in the morning, then stand next ot me on the skytrain lol. Or, people who don't bathe for a prolonged period of time and have nasty BO. Or people who just let one rip then try to pretend it didn't happen...

I generally find that alcoholics reek a lot worse than heavy smokers. Of course, that depends on what the person smokes too. Cigars are shit clouds in a stick. And Camels leave a gnarly stench as well. But regular stuff like Malboro reds don't bother me at all.

I just hate getting the smell on me when I go to certain resturants or someones house for a party. Even at my old job at the werehouse everyone always smoked right in my area. I leave these places smelling like I smoked something myself and I hate it. This "3rd" hand smoke could be passed around by non-smokers this way now that I think about it. If we walk into a bar or resturant, we get it on our clothes or hair from the air filled smoke, and then we can pass it around the same way that a smoker passes it around after that person smokes a cigeratte of their own.

To touch back on my OP.

I was visiting a g/f the other night for coffee and I brought this subject up. She being a smoker herself agreed with my self conscious smoking habits, hiding from children in public, the general feeling of almost shame. Neither of us will smoke in a vehicle with kids and will ask friends (if non-smokers) if they mind we light up, and will then keep our hand right near the open window. All courteous actions.

She didn't feel though that "smoking" is an illegal action, in the sense that WE choose as educated adults to harm our OWN body, essentially not harming anyone else in the process. So the government COULDN'T possibly outlaw the act. I disagreed strongly. Why? Because we're knowing adults... doesn't mean we make the right decisions, and sure we should be free to make mistakes in life, helps us learn, grown, mature, and evolve. However, the government has made it illegal to drive w/o wearing seat belts, which is only punishable by a fine, but essentially, we are only harming OURSELVES. This doesn't put any other drivers on the road at risk, or the passengers in our vehicle, and we are educated adults. If we were to apply the same "rules" to wearing seatbelts as we do smoking, then by 18 we could all choose to go belt less and only be responsible for making under-agers wear them as they're in our vehicle, in our care.

I feel very strongly that smoking should be outlawed. Seriously, I wonder JUST how difficult it would be to implement. How long might it take, but ultimately, would it not be worth it?

Ive got a few opinions about smokers and the smell. Me personally, i smoke once in a blue moon, usually at a party or just kicking it with a few friends, I personally like to smoke Cloves, (Black, vanilla/honey smelling cigarettes) they dont tend to have a bad smell, or ever now and then a menthol/crush.

However, my only issue with heavy smokers is that some arent as concerned with their hygiene/scent as i think they should be. I know that they have to have a smoke every so often, but if it were possible to reduce that, itd be nice. It sucks to have to sit and deal with someones smell, most of the time they dont notice their smell, but everyone else does.

I dont know what its like to work with a smoker, but i can imagine its a bit unpleasant. I think smokers should (Out of courtesy) go out of their way to make sure they arent bothering other people with their smell and what not. Ive got a good buddy who smokes quite often, and everyone in his house does, so obviously he smells like smoke, but he'll wear sweaters, alot of cologne, keep air freshners in his car, and just do extra things in general so that other people arent bothered. Granted, its not foolproof, but its better than jsut letting it fly.

I think the same goes with drinkers too, whenever i work the Liquor Store at my job, some people come in just reeking like theyve been drinking whiskey all day, it smells like sweat + alcohol put together and its sometimes even worse than people who smoke.

Hope this was helpful lol.

I hate tobacco more than any drug out there. It's the most disgusting shit you can do. However, regulation of this issue has already gone too far. All kinds of places are banning ANY business from allowing smoking. That's bullshit. If a business wants to cater to smokers then that's what they should be able to do. Non smokers like myself just have to put up with it or go somewhere else.

I hate smoking. I really really do. However, politicians are dumb and this shit has already gone too far. I don't care how true it is.

There's just no way out? How about quitting? Sure as hell seems like a fantastic way out to me.

.. I think you totally misunderstood, maybe I should make it clearer..

"there's no way out for NON-smokers"
