My favorite comedian, Mitch Hedberg is dead  I am so glad I had the chance to see him live last year. If you have never heard his act, you MUST buy a cd or two - he was absolutely hilarious <3

I will miss you, Mitch

Comedian and Actor Mitch Hedberg, 37, Dies

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Mitch Hedberg, a Minnesota-born comedian who worked in nightclubs, television and film in a wide-ranging career, died in New Jersey, his family said. He was 37.

Hedberg, who struggled with drugs and alcohol, died Wednesday in a hotel room in Livingston, N.J.

Pending the medical examiner's report, the cause of death appears to be heart failure, said his mother, Mary Hedberg. She said her son was born with a heart defect and frequently felt anxious about his condition.

Mary Hedberg said speculation that her son's death was drug-related was gossip.

"We don't know that for a fact," she said, but added, "it's not a secret Mitch used drugs. Whether that played a role in his death or not, we don't know."

A hit on "The Late Show With David Letterman," on which he appeared 10 times, and "The Howard Stern Show," Hedberg once was dubbed "the next Seinfeld" by Time magazine. But TV-series fame eluded him because his unique style of mumbled one-liners didn't lend itself to the sitcom format.

Hedberg delivered absurdist, random observations in a spacy staccato. His long, dirty blond hair harkened to the image of a 1970s stoner.

Jokes about Hedberg's drug use were a staple of his act. He took a hiatus from performing for several months after a May 2003 arrest in Austin, Texas, for felony possession of heroin.

Born in St. Paul, Hedberg rose through the ranks at Minneapolis' Acme Comedy Co. and caught his big break through a Comedy Central special.

His rambling, non-sequitur style often drew comparisons to Steven Wright, but Hedberg disagreed.

"If I made potato chips and put them in a can, people would say I was ripping off Pringles," he said. "But what if I put them in a bag?"

Hedberg had two popular comedy CDs, "Strategic Grill Locations" and "Mitch All Together." He acted in the movie "Almost Famous" — smoking fake pot with Peter Frampton — and appeared on Fox's hit series "That '70s Show."

Hedberg is survived by his wife, comedian Lynn Shawcroft, his father and mother, Arne and Mary Hedberg of St. Paul, and sisters Wendy Brown of Woodbury and Angie Anderson of South St. Paul. [/b]

Mitch Hedburg was, well is (Right now no comedian is as funny as him, dead or alive) my favorite comedian. I cried when I found out he died. I'll miss him.

oh please god, tell me this is an april fool's joke. first bill hicks now mitch? a sadder day, i can't remember...

Very sad day. I actually met him last semester. He came to my college to do a show, and I was part of the committee that got him to come here. A couple friends and I got to show him around and stuff for about an hour before the show went on. Great guy, and a great comedian.

George Carlin is funnier than him >.> but he was funny T.T sad he died... and Lewis Black and Steven Lynch were as funny as him...

This really isn't the appropriate place for this kind of thing. It's like starting off a eulogy like "Well, this guy was cool, but let me tell you about this other guy who was way cooler..."
It's just not cricket. Many people, myself included, were very great admirers of Mitch Hedburg, and, speaking for myself, your comments come off as offensive and disrespectful.

I'm not trying to start a debate.. just stating my opinion on who I think is funny... and yes.. this guy was funny... not saying he wasn't.. just stating my opinion. but ya.. sad he died... too bad his heart failed T.T I bet drugs and alcohol didn't help at all though

I listen to the local rock station here in Atlanta while I play, and I was in the middle of partying when they announced it over the air yesterday morning.

I can't say much about him, except it's a shame for someone to die so young in this age.

I did see his comedy special on Comedy Central on evening. I laughed until I cried, he had serious talent.

yeah - you are an idiot  I have been sick of your constant 2 cents for awhile now - but haven't said anything because there are lots of "know it all's" who blow uneducated hot air around here, but this was way out of line, for ONCE can you STFU and have some respect?

/em avoids topic from now on.

Mitch was a different type of comedy though, and can't even be placed in the same class as George Carlin. With Mitch, it's basically one liners over and over again that are just so funny, but entirely too true. With George Carlin, it's basically a long drawn out story. A Mitch joke is beautiful, because face it ... when he says "An elevator can never break ... it can only turn into stairs" ... it makes me laugh my ass off.
