Beware, this is a multi-pronged flame, and a bit long. Names have been left out to protect the (potentially) innocent.
So I'd set aside this Friday as the time for us to start hunting Paper. We had 4 in our static who needed it, and I figured the weekend would be a good time, since we'd all be able to play for a longer time, and there would likely be more people who also needed this item available. We start a group in Jeuno, send out a few shouts, get no responses. On a whim, I decide to take a peek in Eldieme. I see 3 people there level 50, and they all seem to be in one party. So, what the hell, I say, and I send the leader a tell asking if he had a full group. He responds that we should come and alliance with him. Kickass- or so I thought at the time.
So, we head out to meet them. Turns out they're at the zone into the necropolis at I-10. :? We zone in, alliance up. I check the party list: our group is WAR, RDM, WHM, BLM; their group is NIN, RNG, RDM, RDM. Looks good so far. I realize they're standing right at the zone, so I wave. Some discussion begins about what the battle plan is. The NIN (who is level 51, and just here to help) insists that we can't do anything without a lvl 75 to pull. I relay what I've been told about cure pulling with sneak. Noone does anything. So, after we've been standing around for like 20 minutes with nothing done, I tell them I'll go out and bring a lich here, and we'll see what happens.
I throw up stoneskin and sneak, and head out to find a lich. Now first off, these things are like 30 miles from where my group is standing because they're all lumps who didn't want to move. Nonplussed, I find a lich, and throw a cure at it. CURE DROPS MY SNEAK. I hastily throw another sneak up, but by then the lich has crossed the distance and whacked me. I make it about 3 steps back before my stoneskin is gone and I hit the yellow- you all know what THAT means. Because I paniced and forgot about my 2-hour, I didn't warp out in time and thus died. The death doesn't bother me too much- I knew it was a risk when I set out to pull, and I was the highest in our static xp-wise because of all the EP elementals I'd been fighting. But THEY NERFED SNEAK PULLING!!! WTF?
So I HP, and head back to camp. The calls for high-level help are more insistant now, and I really don't care- I just want to get this done. The NIN has to leave to xp, and the RNG gets a lvl 60 PLD from his LS to help. The RNG says "when the PLD gets here, he'll be able to organize us, because he's done this before" I tell him "good- we need some organizing". We futz around, kill some gobs outside and stuff, while waiting for the PLD. He finally gets there, and we head in. Even though we have 5 people who can sneak party members, they decide to kill everything along the way instead. We follow the path I'd used to get to the liches, and find the gate has been closed. So they want to go around to the other side. MORE pointless fighting ensues, and we get to the other side to find THAT gate is closed too. Then someone gets the idea to OPEN THE GATE. PLD goes off to open the gate, while we wait.
Five minutes and two tomb hounds aggros later, the gate is open. We fight the 2 liches on the other side no problem. RNG pulls a lich from farther off, no sweat. Then, we're out of convenient spawns. People are kinda milling about as the RNG is out searching. A lich pops near camp, and aggros, so we start in on it. The second lich pops, and joins in. Then, inevitably, someone hits yellow and all hell breaks loose. We're fighting 4 VT mobs with 8 people at once- 2 liches, a tomb wolf, and a fallen mage (I think). Everybody's yellow or red, and MP is running out on the healers, when I call for an escape. Now, in my defense, I wasn't thinking straight and forgot that escape wouldn't hit the other group. I was a little preoccupied with other matters, and just did what I would have done in my static when the shit hits the fan- namely, panic and say to hubby "Gah! Escape us!!!"
So now our group is in Batallia near the Jugner zone, and the other group is laying dead in their "camp". We're all orange and red (our WHM was at 5 HP at one point, iirc) and we need to rest up a bit. I tell the other group sorry, I didn't think that Escape would leave them behind. They probably think I was either lying or stupid, but it was true. We offer to come back and raise them once we can.
At this point, discussion in the LS is flying. It's been 2 hours, and we've killed 3 (count them, 3) liches. I feel bad about leaving them to die, but Yomi points out that she'd rather leave them behind than die herself, since they were obviously lacking in organization and communicational skills. (Did I mention that this whole time, I'd never heard either RDM in the other group say a single word?) Our LS leader tells us to not bother going anywhere but the zone reached through the Glacier, or else we're wasting our time. Since we'd had such SPECTACULAR results in southern Batallia, I decide that Rappa is right. More LS people are online now, and we can get a full group just from our LS. We tell the other group we're coming back to raise them, and then heading to the Glacier to hit that zone. I'm being nice- I figure they can do whatever the hell they want, come with us, stay; but they can lot on the drops we get in the glacier. As we're running back through Batallia, they disband alliance. No warning, just poof, gone. I search the RNG, and he's already HP'ed to Jeuno. So I send him a polite tell: "I take it you're not interested in joining us for the glacier zone?" "no" is his only response. "OK then, good luck". Whatever.
Long story short- it took some time to get to the zone, but with all our friends in group we had fun doing it. We got there and were just murdering liches (and anything else in our path, lol). We fought for about 3 hours up there, but only got one paper, so we'll be going back again. But I'll tell you what- I don't mind at all, as long as it's all my friends.
To summarize: SE blows for nerfing cure pulling. Pickup Genkai parties with no organization suck too.
