FFXI

I'm looking for a laptop that can also run FFXI as well or better then a PS2. What are you laptop players using? Models, Video Card, System, ect?

I had a medium-end laptop back in 2003 that could run FFXI without any problems. My lower-end laptop I bought last year can also play it just fine. I have a Geforce 7000M/nForce 610M graphics card built into my laptop and it runs good on normal settings.

Just get a dual-core processor(never ever get celeron or sempron processors), 1-2GB of RAM, and a decent video card and you should be fine.

I have a Dell with 2.20 Ghz Intel Duo Core2 T7500. 2 Gigs of ram. 8600M Geforce video card.

Runs just fine. Probably would be even better if it wasn't Vista.

My single core handles 2 instances of FFXI, albeit slowly. Anything you get these days will be fine.

Look at Toshiba/Lenovo/Fujitsu/LG. A friend of mine just picked up a Toshiba Satellite for about 530 bucks from Best Buy.

Remember FFXI is old programming. And as such requires a ton less resources. I'd be surprised if you could find a piece of shit laptop that -couldn't- run it.

I use this...

Model: nc6120
Manufacturer : HP
Mainboard : HP 099C
Chipset : Intel i910GML/i915GMS
Processor : Intel Pentium M 760 @ 2000 MHz
Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR-SDRAM )
Video Card : Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family
Hard Disk : ST98823A (80 GB)

Dell XPS M1530
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz
RAM 3070 MB
NVidia GeForce 8600M

Basically....like the exact same as Tyrath. And probably the same about the Vista thing, but who knows.

I would really stay away from anything that has an Intel video chip. Look for a laptop that has nVidia or ATI an video card in it. While it probably won't be the fastest out there since it's integrated into the motherboard, it'll be a pretty big leap performance-wise over an Intel GPU. The laptop will last you much longer, too.

The only thing you should avoid is an Intel integrated graphics, like Euphacent said. Any modern laptop should be able to handle it fine.

Even the long-standing issue with GeForce 8x00 mobile graphics is no longer important, the newest drivers finally fixed that.

As always, you all are full of awesome.

ill third that, I always advise people to get a discrete video card, over the intel imbedded shared memory crap. These days, the life of your laptop is based on how fast the graphics get outdated, not the cpu.

My HP has the built in Intel GPU, and i can run FFXI windowed on basically any setting with no problems.

Core2duo something or other T5300
1gb Ram
Intel integrated some kind of gpu...

works just fine, dual box with no problems.

Make sure you specifically ask for no vista, or, if you do, no 64 bit.

FFXI /hates/ vista. Nearly anything on it, warning messages, error messages, ctr alt dlt, anything will kick you out of the game and it takes a notable amount of tweaking.

I've got 1.66 Ghz, 667 Mhz FSB, 1MB L2 cache processer, intel graphics media accelerator (lol spiffy video card =P), 2 GB ram, and can run ffxi with pretty much 0 lag.

Even in a packed campaign I'm fine and have 0 trouble, then again I have most of my settings tweaked down a few notches.

Uh, what? I have no problem running FFXI on Vista. Maybe you're thinking of two years ago, you know, before Microsoft started issuing updates for the OS...

My FFXI works fine on Vista too, better than XP actually.

Eh, it's mostly the user control. When it darkens out the screen and pops the message it kicks me out. the Ctrl Alt dlt screen does that too.

Had to completely stop user control and etc, and even then I get some very stupid moments when my computer just goes EHHHHHHHHHH error and ffxi shuts itself completely down and I have to open it up all the way from scratch.

From what I'm guessing its my video card and vista getting in an argument over ffxi... =/

Considering that most companies aren't offering that "free upgrade to XP" anymore, and that XP support's biological clock is ticking and with Windows 7 being around the corner, good luck with that.

You turn user account control OFF. Ctrl+Alt+Del only effects you if you're using the unofficial windower. I get that too, but I very rarely ever need to bring up the task manager.

Yep you guys basically coverred the Vista problems. My only issue is when im dual boxing and watching a movie, the three programs using the onborad GPU taxes it enough to drop one of them, usually being a FFXI instance.

Besides that, Its no issue. Vista works just fine.

Please do not give technical related advice since you obviously know nothing about it. Your biggest complaint with Vista is that YOU don't know hot to turn off User Account Control settings. I have been running vista on a HP NC6820 with a Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB memory and a integrated ATI Mobility Radion X1350 for over a year now and never had a issue with the machine, but that is because I don't blame the issues I have on Microsoft. I'm not that stupid.
