A Possible Solution to the Gil-seller Problem

If they made isolated servers with SE selling gil, people on the normal servers would still buy gil because A) they don't want to change servers and B) they don't want people to know they're gilbuyers, so the problem will still exist.

I rather like the boycott idea, and I see only one real problem with it.

I may be too far gone to lay it down for that length of time :P

Having read through the posts and reflected on this some more, I realized that SE selling gil would only be half the solution. This might well be the other half:

Shift the game's economy to more accurately mimic a real-world economy.

What I mean by that is this - have SE establish some baseline prices on certain items to act as indicators, then adjust the prices offered/accepted by NPCs as well as the amount of gil dropped by Beastmen to reflect rising and falling inflation.

If I'm not mistaken, this would, in effect, allow SE to act as a sort of Fed, adjusting prices to offset inflation. Now I know that some of you reading this are probably thinking, "What good would that do? That's just further devaluing our gil." This is true, but one must remember that the only reason to fear a devalued currency is its relative strength versus another currency. Since we have no other in-game currency (unless ya count Beastcoins :P), the only real impact this would have is to lessen the time us purists spend crafting/mining/logging/farming.

It would also have the sidereal benefit of discouraging the purchase of gil under any circumstances, because while there is no other in-game currency, gil is now competing with the almighty dollar. Think of it this way:

One greedy lil bastich with his daddy's credit card buys 5 million gil. He spends it all, buying rare items at whatever price it takes to get them (here's greed working to our benefit), and the following system update, SE notes a rise in inflation and adjusts prices/drops accordingly. Guess what? The gil bought last week is worth less per dollar than it was the week before. So he'd have to buy progressively larger amounts of gil to see the same return on his investment.

Now how does that affect the non-buyer? Not at all. We get larger gil drops, more return on NPC sales, and have benefited through the AH for the laziness and stupidity of someone who wouldn't know fair play if it bit em in the ass.

I honestly don't know if anyone has suggested this before, and I have yet to ponder all the ramifications of such a change, being blinded by epiphany and all. So here it is for your pleasure - one big, fat target floating lazily across the sky, hoping not to go down in flames.

. . .

i agree that a boycott for a month or two would open SE's eyes to how dis-pleased many people are. But, it will never happen, people are to damn addicted to this game, and it will drive them crazy to thing of all the things they might miss-out on during their absence.

i'm so fed-up with all the bull shit involved in this game that i'ma just out-right quit altogether. gimme another month or two, and you'll see MY character being played by some fat-ass china-man further causing gil-selling problems, but by that time, it wont be my problem anymore, and i'll be a few hundred dollars richer thanks to the laziness of said china-man for not wanting to lvl up his own damn character.

Dominant characteristic of Hume: ENVY

Actually if you want to get Technical, thats the characteristic of the Mithra. Hume is Apathy ;o

Anyway. The only way prices will go down is if a severe amount of gil were removed from the game as stated. Gil Sellers aren't putting more gil into the game, they're just making it readily available to anyone willing to put forth real life cash for it.

I mentioned in one of my linkshells that SE should just step in, and purge a good portion of the servers gil. It'll be the only way to reduce prices, without getting the "greedy" people to lower that of their sales.

Also, I am not defending what Gil Sellers do. I believe everyone should make their own gil. You're already paying to play the game. Why pay 3 times your subscription fee for 1 million gil, when you can earn it in only a few days, essentially making 1 Million worth just about 25 Cents. You don't pay someone to make money for you in console RPGs, you shouldn't here.

There has been discussions in the Alla and KI boards about SE messing up in the English version. In the Japanese client, it's Envy for Hume and Apathy for Mithra. I think it makes more sense that way

If there's an inflation..doesn't that cause a great depression? >.> That would be so cool..having ffxi being in a great depression

That's too complicated. Why don't we just locate the gil sellers and punish them with brutal torture?

Ouch. I would be more hurt if it wasn't coming from you. Please grow up.

we'd wear rags and stuff and tell newbs, "WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE LEAPING BOOTS ONLY COST A NICKEL AND NOW LOOK AT EM!" lol, in regards to the OP, i say we just find the gil sellers (IRL, cuz my solution doesn't work too good on the internets) and blow em up. it's violent, theres explosions, and the gil sellers would be gone. EVERYONES HAPPY!

No. Things would still be the same, it's just the people that buy gil would actually have to work for it. It would do nothing, except probably cause those incredibly lazy types to quit.

This is my (expanded) point in a nutshell.

If the NPC sales and gil drops actually responded to rising and falling AH prices, then those lazy types would either have to give up on gil-buying completely or be willing to fork out increasing amounts of cold, hard cash to keep up with the in-game economy. The impact it would have on non-buyers would be negligible, or at least I believe it would.

Though I must admit, the idea of hideous torture does have its appeal . . .
