Abortion video

I'm stuck between this. I think having an abortion is wrong, yet I think its ok under certain situations. But yet I ask myself "How could someone be mentally ok after having an abortion?"

If it were me, and lets say, I got raped. I decide to have an abortion because I don't want to think that, "Oh well this child I'm having is from the person who raped me". So I get the abortion. Personally, I would be even more fucked up mentally, how they abort the baby, is just, ugh. I don't think I could live knowing I just killed my baby, even if it was from rape.

So it's all about biological connection, is it? In the very strictest of terms, a fetus isn't and never was part of its mother's body. It's an organism all its own developing within another organism, obtaining its nutrients via a biological connection to its "host."

The argument could be made that regardless of how the nutrients are delivered, that fetus/child continues to obtain all its nutrients through its parents/caretakers for an amount of time vastly longer than the nine month incubation period. Once said fetus/child reaches a developmental stage where it would be capable of taking nourishment via "baby" methods, it really seems that unreasonable to consider it at that point, in fact, a baby, whether in utero or not?

Finally, in answer to your question - I'd let the mother do whatever the mother wanted to do, regardless of how immoral or irresponsible I might find it to be. If society were to deem it a crime, more's the better.
A baby, while inside the mother's body, is a parasite. It can not live without its host, and lives off of the other creature.

Do you know what you do with parasites? :p

Like I said earlier, if you truly believe that it isn't right for a mother to seek an abortion in the latter stages of her pregnancy, we're already on the same page, and those are the instances I'm specifically addressing.

I don't believe it isn't right, I said it won't happen. There's a difference between wanting and to do.

Like I said earlier, it is rare that a mother want to perform an adoption in the later stages of her pregnancy, since you don't wake up once you're 9 months in and go "holy fuck, I'm pregnant!". Most make up their mind pre-5 months. So the situation you're talking about is already extremely rare.

Additionally, the doctors will, most likely, tell the woman that an abortion that late in the pregnancy is not wise. We've been through this already I believe. What you're saying is basically:

you: If a green pig walked up to you and said "If you don't make an abortion, I will kill your sister", would you do it?
me: It is highly unlikely that a pig will be walking and be green. And if there somehow were one, I doubt it'd threaten a woman with her sister's life
you: I'm talking about IF a green pig would do it.

While yes, that situation is taken to the extreme, but its an example.

You can't say its fair to make abortions illegal for all women to stop the maybe 2 or 3 women in that 1,2 mil that DO make an abortion in the 8 or 9th month, if that's truly what you feel. That'd be like making alcohol illegal because some minors might get their hands on it.

I'm not saying ALL abortions should be illegal. I'm saying that the only ones I DON'T think should be legal are the ones that would take place during the time frame I'm suggesting, that is, after the child has developed to the point where it is perfectly viable ex utero.

The rarity of the situation shouldn't preclude it from being brought into a discussion about the legality/illegality of abortions themselves and what, if any, punishment should be handed out, especially since those so vehemently opposed to considering the rights of an unborn child insist that the mother's rights supercede the rights of the child in any set of circumstances you choose to name. I've taken the approach I have in an effort to illustrate that there is plenty of arbitration and close-mindededness on both sides of the issue.

What really cracks me up is that I'm no one's notion of your rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth "anti-choicer", yet I get opposition at great lengths the moment I suggest that, beyond a certain point, there should be at least some consideration for the rights of an unborn child. Amazing, no?

I've really only got one thing left to add to this discussion, and it occurred to me while I was on break. It is:

So the rights of the mother will always outweigh the rights of the child she carries? Couldn't we logically extend this to the statement: "The rights of those alive at this moment will always outweigh the rights of those who might be here one day"?

If that's the case, to hell with conservation. Screw the environment. Do what you please, when you please, and to whatever excess you please(so long you don't get any on the guy next to you), and consequences be damned. We won't be here to have to deal with them anyway. Serve me up another of those delicious whale steaks, if you please. I'll just be out back setting fire to a few more tons of fossil fuel, cuz damn, that sure does make a pretty fire.

The whole debate was whether abortion should be illegal or not. Illegal means its illegal in every way. Just like murder is always illegal. if its legal, then its legal in every way, just like cola. While yes, you could technically go about it like alcohol, but its still not illegal below the age of 18 (20 in some countries). It is merely not recommended that you do not use it below the allowed age. It is not illegal per-se (at least not in Sweden) to sell it to minors. If you do, however, you will be warned, and later your license to sell it will be temporarily revoked if you repeat it. But they don't actually check up on whether or not you sell it.

Abortion is similar. It is legal, but the doctors will not recommend you to perform an abortion past a certain stage.

Because if he does, YOU'RE DEAD. And if he doesn't, than nothings happened, and you get refered to a psyhiatric hospital for wanting to kill yourself.

If you ask a doctor to perfrom surgery and you die, he either made a mistake resulting in your death, or it was a possible outcome of a dangerous surgery and you die as a result (in that case you likely signed a waiver saying you knew there was a high chance that you wouldn't survive the surgery)

Malpractice included in above answer. He fucked up, thats why you sued him. Also FYI, Malpractice isn't acualy illegal. Its just a grounds to file a claim on.

I'm not worked up that its murder, remember, pro-choice.
But in every other case where all parties involved know the act for which you are planning is illegal, all parties involved are guilty. This proposed law of yours would be the single exception to that rule anywhere, wherin that not all parties knowingly and voluntarily involved are not guilty.

this was against a specific way of preforming abortion, not against the idea itself. It was done so because it was deemed inumane, when there are other viable options that can be used at that stage of pregnancy.

Where did anything I say was agasint the idea of abortion itself? Show me.

How is what I proposed any differnt than the partial birth abortion act of 2003?

Why arn't you against the partial birth abortion act of 2003? Don't you think the woman should be guilty in that case?

Your not making any sense, your beating around the bush, and trying to take the side track on all your answers.

DarkDante, you're about as wrong as it gets on the idea that the woman is not part of the decision and wouldn't be breaking the law. If you hire a hitman, you're as guilty as if you'd pulled the trigger yourself. Attempted suicide is illegal; the only way you escape punishment for that is if you manage to pull it off.

Quote me where I said that. Where did I say the decison making process was part of the crime? I said the procedure during the third trimester would be the crime.

Sure if you pull things you think I said out of your ass, it might make you sound smart. But I never did say that. Again you 2 keep comparing the choice to murder and so are thinking that a woman seeking an abortion is conspiring to commit a crime. However the law I suggested was for the physician, like the law currently in effect, the partial ban act of 2003.

When you finally get your minds off of murder, which I never brought up but is stuck in both your minds, you'll understand that.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Nothing will appease those people short of the complete illegality of abortion. Too much of their religion is invested in the idea of keeping women "in their place," so there is no way in hell they're going to stop with third-trimester abortion. That's not a victory for them; it's just a stepping stone to fight their way back along the other six months.

Hahahahahahahaha WRONG!

Without the absoluteness of a child's life at stake to strenghen thier argument and feed the fight for making abortions illegal thier voice will die, or will be too weak to do anything. Because we all know everyone who has half a brain agree's a child is pretty much "alive" during the third trimester, but everyone can't really decide about anything before that.

Not everyone is a man loving, Christian fearing, god hating, athiest like yourself who views woman as best friends and total equals and nothing more but maybe a future vessel to feed your need for procreation. Some of us view them as having to go through something special that non of us guys have to go through, but also understand that it should allow them special considerations when it comes to pregnancy, birth of our children, and the laws that govern how that happen.

halfifirin said:
It's worth pointing out that it was deemed inhumane by politicians and not by the doctors who said it was one of the safer methods. Now they're left with the one that has higher risks. But hey, what's the life of a woman when you're trying to Protect The Children™?
Yeah. Do you even know how the procedure is done?

Quote me where I said that. Where did I say the decison making process was part of the crime? I said the procedure during the third trimester would be the crime.

You said the procedure would be a crime, but you also have been saying only the doctor would be responsible for committing the crime. Why not hold the woman accountable as well? The murder comparison isn't one that I pulled out of thin air; it's the one the anti-choice crowd uses, so you'll excuse me if I like to throw their own (lack of) logic against them. If abortion is murder, as they so often say, then they should act like it and treat the woman as a co-conspirator.

Because we all know everyone who has half a brain agree's a child is pretty much "alive" during the third trimester, but everyone can't really decide about anything before that.

Again, a ban on late-term abortion will not appease the anti-choice crowd and convince them to pack it up and go home to celebrate a job well done. There are more than enough people arguing that a newly-fertilized egg be given the same rights and personhood status as a ten-year-old.

Not everyone is a man loving, Christian fearing, god hating, athiest like yourself who views woman as best friends and total equals and nothing more but maybe a future vessel to feed your need for procreation.

I'm glad you admit you believe women are not equal to men. There's a big chunk of the anti-choice philosophy right there: women can't be trusted to make their own decisions.

Do you even know how the procedure is done?

Yes.

What is it I'm not reading? I did read the whole thing. Several times actually, but it still said the same thing. Here's the bolded part you wanted me to read again.

I weren't refering to you saying it was absolutely out of the woman's control. You said it MAY not be in a woman's controll. I honestly don't see your reasoning and basis for that, since its the woman HERSELF that decide to do the abortion, unless the doctor says she needs to perform an abortion, otherwise she'll die. Its completely within her control.

A Woman is dying, out cold, or delierious and pregnant. How is she gonna answer in control? How are you going to know she's in control if she does answer?

Uzor said:
I didn't say it was the majority. I just explained that the situation you describe is very small. Way less then 1%.

And I was explaining to you that your way less means 1000 babies are aborted. Is this a small number to you?

Uzor said:
Hence why it should remain legal. If someone decides to attempt a suicide, that's illegal. They decided they wanted to do that with their bodies. How is that any different from a woman deciding she doesn't want the baby? Not the killing part, but the decision over your own body part.

Sure if you wanna sit there with your blinders on and make believe that the Christian right is not growing stronger everyday and has not already has made the first move toward criminlizaing abortion. then ya. I guess sitting there saying "It should be legal" and doing nothing to make sure that it "STAYS LEGAL" would help someone like you.

I bet you sit around wondering why we have such fucked up laws that get passed everyday and just shrug your shoulders when you see that happen also? It's no wonder that your generation is being made slaves to feed the pension scams that your fathers made and you do nothing about it. You just sit there say "oh well" and don't even try to make a proactive move to change shit before shit happens.

Uzor said:
WRONG, you just said earlier that it wasn't a majority. That even 1% is still 1000 babies, and now you suddenly changed your mind and decided that 99% are done at this stage?

Ya. I said not the majority. The "or" your reffering to should have been a "but".
And yes I did say 1% is 1000 babies, and that seems to be a small number in your mind.

Never changed my mind you seem to be confused again, but that could have been my fault the way I wrote that, thus my correction.

Uzor said:
Actually, that's the whole thing we're saying its NOT. So you mean pro-lifers don't say its murder?

So why are you trying to find blame on the woman for conspiracy? This is what it's about. YOu gay guys who don't have to get pregnant want woman who do, to have your babies, go to jail when you don't own up to shit and help them take care of the babies. You also want jail to hang over thier heads, so when you can't get your way and tell them not to have an abortion when they want one. That's a fucking hypocrite if you ask me.

Uzor said:
Then what is your whole argument that abortion should be illegal?

Where the fuck did I say that?

Uzor said:
Additionally, why are the people demonstrating against abortion holding signs of dead fetuses and signs that say "Stop the murder!"?

Because...... Christian's believe in criminilaizing abortions?

Uzor said:
Additionally, you want to know WHY your "abortion 1 week prior to when the baby is due" never happens?

NEVER happens? What happend to the 1000 babies who get aborted in the third trimester? Who said it NEVER happens?

Uzor said:
Well, at that point the baby can survive being prematurely born. So the doctor would most likely recommend performing caesarean section and put the baby up for adoption.

Yes because a woman who wants an abortion would want to be cut open, and get a big fat scar on her body.

My reasoning for fully supporting the right to choose is due to several.

As a WOMAN, I would not want to bear the child of a rapist. I would not want to have a child out somewhere wondering who his real mother and father are, only to come home and find out his father was a criminal and his mother never wanted him. The emotional toll that a child, adult or otherwise would go through after discovering such a thing in many cases is traumatizing. In ALL cases of rape, abortions are fair if the mother chooses to want one. No woman should be FORCED by law to CARRY a rapists child for 9 months, taking care of the fetus and herself, getting checkups for it (medical bills if no insurance, yes?). If the mother feels that she cannot have an abortion, she will decide that on her own. I'm sure not all raped women who were impregnated would opt for abortions, some have more morals than that. But those individuals who don't feel a strong moral or religious belief binding them to the child shouldn't be forced to carry it because some individuals in the country view life differently than she does. It is her private issue and her body. It makes me sick when people say in ALL cases a woman should carry it.

Now, the reason why I support abortions for those who choose it. With the poverty rate on a rise and seeing prices rising, I would not begrudge a woman who chose to get an abortion because they do not feel that they can support a child. Myself, I don't want a child until I'm out of college, I have a job, I have a place to live and I'm settled in with my basic needs. If someone is barely able to afford food for themself, I think that they should be able to make the individual choice to abort bringing a child into a poverished life. It is unfair to demand that a woman carries a child for 9 months only to have to give it up, when if they would have been able to afford the child, they would've gladly kept it in their arms and cared for it. I would much rather see a woman make a right decision than have their child raised on the streets, or be mistreated. If a woman cannot provide for a child that in itself breaks the law. Endangering welfare of a child. My main argument here is against adoption at the time of early pregnancy and conception. If you know you are pregnant and can have an abortion instead of adoption, I think a woman should be able to choose that if they want. I don't believe adoption is the next best thing to abortion. Abortion is something the mother or parents choose on their own. Adoption is something that affects the life of the child long after it is born. It also affects the mother who wished she could keep the child she had. Myself, I would never give my child up for adoption if I couldn't afford it. I'm sure other women in worse situations than I am would say the same. I really have a downward looking view on adoption. It is a good thing in some cases, but in another its very unfortunate.

While I don't support all reasons for having an abortion, I do support an individual decision to choose. If an individual does not want to lose their quality of life and an accidental pregnancy occurs, I think if they are willing to have the burden of their actions, so be it.

A no brainer for me, if the mothers life is in danger, I would opt for the woman's right to choose her own life over her child's. As cruel as my view may be on this, the woman has family, has friends, has a life, has something to live for. The fetus or child, is just beginning life. I know many argue that the child has a whole life ahead of them, but I still would allow a mother to choose. I think it would be absolutely unfair for legal-binding laws to force the mother to die for its child, now that medical technology has the ability to save a woman during pregnancy. I personally would probably save my own life instead of the child. Selfish I guess, but I can always try to have another child after more precautions are taken, and I could always adopt. Thats my personal opinion, and I think other women have the right to choose the same way I would. I know many would sacrifice their life, but there are also many who wouldn't.

Personally? I would look to my friends and family and I'm sure that I would be able to handle a child with their support. Some women are not fortunate enough to be in that situation, and I refuse to begrudge them because of it. I would not get an abortion myself, but I acknowledge another woman may think differently than me, and if she chooses to make that choice, she must live with it and all consequences that come with it. I'm not sure what I would do in a case of rape honestly. I'd pray it never happens and I couldn't say how I'd react at present time.

The only time that I frown on a woman getting an abortion is if they are using it as a form of contraception. We debated this in one of my classes, and there are some women who have had up to 10 abortions within a 3-4 year period. I feel doctors should be advised and a medical history recorded of pregnancies. If a women is not being safe about her sexual activity, then I would like to see doctors prevent the viable alternatives, one being adoption, other being forms of contraception that may be more permanent. There should be a limit on the number of abortions which a woman may have. That is my only personal feeling toward restrictions on it.

I am against partial birth abortion. If you can't make a decision on whether or not you want a child at the time these abortions are performed, then it is time to just have the child and deal with the consequences. Take care of it or give it up for adoption. For anyone who does not know the procedure, it is pretty gruesome. If the fetus can live outside the womb, it shouldn't be aborted.

I do not have well-set religious beliefs. My view is that until a fetus is viable, it cannot live. Someone with religious beliefs will surely find a million flaws in my reasoning, but its my reasoning. In my opinion, it is violating an individuals privacy rights to have protesters of abortion and right wingers in Washington deciding whether or not a woman may have an abortion. If it isn't someone in your family or circle of friends, then it isn't your business to decide for someone else. Thats how I see it.

Keep in mind that abortion also takes a toll on the woman who receives one. If she's willing to live with destroying her potential child and the reaction from the father, relatives and others, then it is her choice. I couldn't have an abortion myself, but I'm not going to let my views and my choices influence people I don't even know.

And I don't think a man should be able to force a woman to have an abortion. The man is the one who impregnates the woman, they do not have to carry the child. It is a really hard issue, because if I were the father I would want to have a say in regards to the child, but ultimately if the woman is comfortable or feels that she is ready for a child and is willing to carry it full term, the man should not be able to force her to go through something traumatizing. Suck it up guys.

In regards to a man being informed about the potential abortion, in a perfect world I would expect regulations where the man at least acknowledges his child is being aborted, but the world isn't perfect. Pregnancy from conception to birth takes a much larger toll on a female than a man, obviously. If a woman is desperate to have an abortion, she should be able to make and live with this choice. While on personal levels I don't agree with it, I understand that my opinions shouldn't have an impact on someone elses life choices.

You said the procedure would be a crime, but you also have been saying only the doctor would be responsible for committing the crime. Why not hold the woman accountable as well? I reffered to anti-choice people as crazy. Thank you for grouping me up with them.

Why shouldn't the woman be held accountable as well? The doctor can be seen clear cut as a criminal if he does an abortion when he knows it's illegal, right?

A woman however can be in many cases be in a not so clear cut situation. Primarily because she is the victim as well as the conspirator. The bottom line is it's her body, we don't want to send our woman to jail, for making a decision about her own body, but we also need to so something about the loud voice for abortion. Something needs to be done, a line needs to be drawn if you like it or not. I believe I've stated where the line should be that would appease both sides farely well. The line that appeases both sides will never make you completely happy, but when you look at the whole picture, it would work fairly well. I think so anyway.

Sure. Because you believe they are exactly like you and are not willing to compromise in any sense of the word. Sure if they are not willing to compromise and want it all thier way or the highway they will feel like that. Thankfully not everyone is.

Do you have babies? Do you carry around a kid for 9 months? Do you have a period? Do you need to expierience child-birth? Do you need to put up with some stupid asshole who wants a kid and demands you have that baby even though he has no job, pays for jack shit, and still lives with his mom?

Ya I guess men and woman are really equal there.

halfifirin said:
Ya so you know that most mothers who expierience such an abortion have nightmares about it? And now that it's illegal alot more woman try to have it earlier, or are at least saved from the horrer of the procedure.

And your wrong about Doctors not being against it. The reason the ban passed was because alot of doctors were against it.

A woman however can be in many cases be in a not so clear cut situation. Primarily because she is the victim as well as the conspirator.

Again, you're saying a woman making a decision to end her pregnancy is a victim. You're implying she has little say in what she's doing. That's pretty demeaning.

I believe I've stated where the line should be that would appease both sides farely well. ... Because you believe they are exactly like you and are not willing to compromise in any sense of the word.

I don't have to "believe" they don't want to compromise on abortion. I just have to turn on the television or surf the internet or listen to the radio and hear the anti-choice people confirm they don't want a compromise. If I thought they'd be content with a ban on late-term abortion and would stop trying to chip away at the first six months, I'd relax a bit. They are not content with that.

And as I've said earlier in this thread, I think a woman's right to decide what's going on inside her own body trumps their concerns. If they don't want abortions, they're free to not have them.

So now you resort to twisting my words?

I didn't have to. When I'm arguing all along that women are moral agents capable of making their own reproductive decisions as equals who don't need to be "protected," and you follow up by saying not everyone believes women are equals and that you believe something else, it's not that big of a twist. It's fine if your words were unclear and you want to clarify them, but I wasn't twisting them.

And now that it's illegal alot more woman try to have it earlier, or are at least saved from the horrer of the procedure.

Late-term abortion is not banned. Just one type of late-term abortion. They got a ban in place that says you can't pull a fetus halfway out and crush its skull, but they left in place the one where you go in and dismember it in the womb. The latter procedure is more risky and leaves women more prone to injury, but we wouldn't want to let doctors make those kinds of decisions about which procedure is best for their patients. They might've kept the banned one in place, since it carried less risk to the health of the mother.

But I'm not really concerned about turning this into a battle over late-term abortion. My point is that women are capable of deciding if they should carry a pregnancy to term or not, and it doesn't really matter to me when she makes that decision. The anti-choice crowd isn't content to decide for themselves that abortion isn't an option for them; they want to make sure that it's an option nobody gets to pick.

In this point, you're not talking about rape so..

If you get pregnant during a time when you're unable to afford to take care of a baby. Then well, that's your own damn fault. You shouldn't of had sex. So now, you got pregnant, but you can't afford your child, so abort it? This isn't rape. It was consentual (sp?) They chose to have sex. Oops! Let's kill the baby.

Like I said not everyone follows my view. If they can live with what they're undertaking let it be their own choice. Condoms break, pills can fail. Maybe it was consensual but still unwanted. I really wouldn't FORCE someone BY LAW to keep a child they can't afford to have. Imagine carrying a child in you for 9 months, knowing that when it comes out, you can't keep it and that you'll likely never see it again unless it comes looking for you.

To clarify more... say a 18 year old has consensual sex with a guy at a party, gets pregnant. She knows she can't afford it, nor can her parents help her. The guy has declared that he wont have anything to do with her, that it isn't his, that she is a slut and sleeps around so it can't possibly be his, anything to get out of it. If she, in HER mind does not want to have the child and is willing to do anything to get rid of the child, abortion is a more controlled method of doing so. I've heard cases of girls willing to have their boyfriends jump on their stomach in attempt to kill the child. If abortion is outlawed, people still will abort their children, but its much safer to have a doctor who understands and can explain what will happen to the woman, rather than her throwing herself down a staircase to have a miscarriage.

In general this isn't the case, but it DOES exist. Would you rather have a woman who got pregnant mistakenly, be in so much depression and helplessness, not taking care of herself or the child during the pregnancy, attempting to miscarry the child relentlessly, or would you rather she made a decision, got the procedure and learned from the lesson. If shes willing to make the decision to do such a thing, I wouldn't stop her. I wouldn't CONDONE it but I wouldn't stop her if she chose to. Its her body its her life, its not mine.

I would NEVER support abortion as a method of contraception. If shes repeatedly getting pregnant, abortion isn't the way she should be controlling herself getting pregnant. For one instance, where a mistake occurs though, I wouldn't shun a woman for making this decision once.

Yeah man, god forbid a condom breaks or something. I want you to go out and ask every 18-30 year old who isnt exactly "Financial stable" and see how many of them aren't having sex because they couldnt afford a baby if they had one. People aren't just gonna stop having sex. And yeah, if you're using birth control and condoms you shouldn't get pregnant, but shit happens. If someone cant support the health upkeep of a fetus or baby, then they shouldn't have it.

It's not a baby right when you get pregnant, it's not even a human, it's nothing but cells. So quit saying you're killing a baby. You're not.

If you get an abortion at say, six months, then you're killing a baby because it's actually developed and has some senses.

Would you rather have a woman who got pregnant mistakenly, be in so much depression and helplessness, not taking care of herself or the child during the pregnancy, attempting to miscarry the child relentlessly
This is why, until there is a foolproof method of birth control, abortion is sadly a necessary thing. These are the alternatives, and to think they wouldn't happen is naive.

One day, when, or if there is such a thing, and we actually teach people about it, (I'm looking at you, abstinence based sex-ed) then and only then can we start to view abortion as a crime.
