Someone asked whether there is an LS for gays in the (drumroll .... surprise!) Linkshell Recruitment section of this board, and let's see what qualified reply there was to that;

IMO sex and religion should NOT be talked about in FFXI

I am pretty sure that this was not the answer to the question asked. In fact, I am pretty sure no one gives a fuck what you think.

However, since this topic was brought up, what about art in FFXI (Ruben's did FFN), or music (see off-topic discussion about whatever music style you want to call that noise), or politics?

Since when is "should not be talked about" acceptable? Last I checked, neither Japan, not the USA were oppressive societies.

Let's take this a step further, what are some appropriate topics for consenting adults? Just so we all can make the right choices when it comes to what we can and can not talk about.

We all seem to be mature individuals here. So I think that anything that is legal, is fair game. If something seems to overstep boundries IE: Illigal, or incredibly vulgar, I'm sure you would remove it Sculli.

For the most part though, this IS a flame board, If someone can't take the heat- get outta the damn kitchen.

well, I can say Religion and politics are both banned from my LS's chat. Too many arguments and fights start that way, so we all keep it off of those topics, and no one seems to mind...

Not all posters are consenting adults on this site.

Heh, I remember seeing a post on Allakhazam about constructing a Democrat LS on another server. In the end a LS is a private club with minimal structure, thus can have specific rules. Mine asks to not dwell in those topics that can end in flame wars, or at least that mishaps don't ruin the whole gaming experience of the LS as a whole.

What happens in other people's LS are not a concern of mine. Heck, there are a few openly gay members on my LS, and it doesn't bother me as they are not "in your face" to the other members of the LS with their sexuality.

So as long as I'm not getting hit on for being a guy playing a Mithra and being told "you never know if you like it before you tried", I won't have a problem. And if it does happen, I'll just /blist the guy who offended me, knowing most gays aren't like that.

*this is the second thread today that I've written a responce only to erase it* >< Opening a can of worms.

That's indeed true. I suppose there is a great(?) number of individuals who do not count as adults in a legal kind of sense. However, it's really about what can be talked about in FFXI and not on this board.

If someone would want to join a LS where all they do is drool over girls in rubber boots (just an example), then so be it, it's a choice they make, and who am I (or are we) to disagree?

Everyone is a paying customer, and thus should be able to spend his or her times as he or she pleases. Don't want to talk about religion while playing FFXI? Don't join a linkshell that does include religious conversations. But FFS don't tell other people what they should or should not do.

As far as the flameboard goes, I haven't seen anything on here that's not already well established opinion or vocabulary of teenagers, thus I see no reason to interfere.

Kurgon, do post, it's the flameboard, anything goes, and you will feel better afterward. ;)

just a little thing...the term "gays" is actually kinda derogatory. gay men/women, lesbian, or the all encompassing queer is the way to go. Just thought I'd throw that out^^

Whatever people want to do in FFXI is their business, as long as they aren't doing it around me (I consider myself an open person, but if you and some guy are talking about, in detail, what you're doing in your mog house together and I can see it, I'm gonna have to get pretty pissed off :P)/ We have so many different private channels for a reason, so people can talk about whatever they wish. They should be wary though, that some people in their ls may find what they are saying or doing offensive and should respect that.
Overall though, it's really up to the player how they choose to spend their time on the game.

Well if it was a mindless flaming then I would join in. I try to be rational in most debates but most things don't have a black and white side to them. There is a ton of grey. My issue ends up being if one chastizes another for their opinion just to start spewing there own opinion it just becomes a convaluted mess of hipocracy.

On one hand I see the internet and MMORPG's to be a inherintly anonymous place. I mean unless you tell me you are a woman, man, homosexual, heterosexual, black, white, catholic, protistant, athiest, I'll never know any different. From my experiences with link shells most convos revolve around nothing more than in game chatting. "OMG I just died!", "What are you guys doing? ^^", "Man I am almost done farming for these new (insert name of uber items)", etc. So my first instinct is to question why is there a need to seperate one self from others based on something as petty as those discriptors I posted above? For the most part in-game I am Kurgon and my convos relate to what is occuring to Kurgon. (exceptions would be when I talk to r/l friends ingame)

Then again I can also start to see the other side of the equation. Amonimity breeds a weird feeling of e-bravery. People will say the nastiest things to people simply because there is no physical threat. If one were to take the step of informing people that s/he were homosexual then I could definetly see someone taking it upon themseves to harass them. Someone in Bastok was shouting about his creation of a Christian LS last night and there were a couple snide comments made to that effect. I could see if you were opposed to reading curse words or people blaspheming that you might want a place of respite within a LS of similar mind set.

Bahhh. This is why I erase messages. I see multiple sides of the issue but it ends up just aggrivating me. Basically I just hate to see people purposfully seperate themselves from others in a fantasy based game due to real life ugliness.

I think there is a bit of a different stance taken in regards to the Prarie Bear LS in particular since it's a friend LS and pretty strictly so.

So what goes on in game between us is an extension of what goes on outside of the game for us. So I don't really get this sense of e-bravery, and if someone is going to point themselves out as participating in or belonging to some sort of minority group whether this is because of racial, sexual or theological differences if you chastise someone over that you're just a small minded prick.

By e-bravery I mean people who basically are two-faced. In front of you (in this case if they met you in real life) they would treat you very well, in fact you might even think of them as a friend. Once the same person gets on that computer and they have that anonimity they will become the nastiest ugliest person because their, as far as they're concerned, is no consequences.

I can understand that.

Oh I am aware of what you mean . . . and I think it's almost natural for a lot of people to go through this . . . but mostly it's young males between 13 and 15 years old who like to say things to people on line that they'd get the tar beat out of them saying to other kids on the playground.

Scull, bro, u really need to chill out. Fine, what Valec wrote wasnt the answer to the threads question, but if were not oppresive societies, why are u, in other words, telling him to cramp his OPINION, which he emphasizes with caps "IMO". Seriously, you cant be two-faced and not support giving one's opinion which was stated probably without any malice and support freedom of speech at the same time. Fine, that wasnt the flameboard, but it wasnt a flame, and hopefully didnt mean to start anything. He should've been a little wiser and posted a new thread, but we cant give everyone that much credit, we all have stupid moments. This post is more in regard to your post being so angry than anything else. If you arent angry, than refrain from the profanity, because it just causes confusion to ur tone.
You support freedom of speech, but support slander at the same time, which can potentially be a legal offense if someone chooses to press charges. The flameboard has become much to legalistic..IN MY OPINION. A guideline has to be drawn regarding respect for players in the community, otherwise this forum is going to become a lot less friendly and a lot more vulgur and hostile. I dunno, I have the choice to steer clear of topic like that, but as a member of the community, I kind of feel that when someone is being attacked and I know the person, its unavoidable. Whatever I've gone off on a tangent here, but things are getting really out of hand. not sure what else to say.

/rant off

The problem with a religious or sexually preferenced linkshell in this game is easily solved when you understand what the purpose of a linkshell is and what your own relationship to gaming is. Linkshells are realy used to garner easier communication. This ease of communication generally results in a group of people helping each other to achieve in game goals.
Suppose for a second you have a Christian LS. How would it be beneficial to in-game goals to be surrounded by Christians? Its kinda like an LS based on ONE job or ONE race. Kinda fun, but ultimately a novelty. How successful would an all DRG party be? Or an all taru party? Yeah you could try really hard and make it work, but why would you want to put in that much effort just to make something barely work? Its fun once or twice, but devoting an LS to it? A good LS really doesn't specialize because it takes a mixture of people to get things done easily.
A religious or sexual preference based LS would essentially be an in- game chat room, and then you really have to question the needs and the desires of the people involved. Aren't there better outlets for these kind of gatherings? Aren't there many other chat rooms, rooms that don't cost $13 a month to use? And if you are religious, don't you have houses of worship? People you could actually interact with on a very personal basis? People in your own town?
It would be an awfully lonely and insecure person who needs such an LS. Which isn't to say that these people don't exist or that there is anything unusual about lonliness or insecurity. However, if you look to ffxi for companionship and reinforcement of your beliefs, I would suggest you find a better place. There is nothing WRONG with christianity or homosexuality in ffxi, but is it the BEST place to look for groups of these nature? Not at all. Look to your friends, schools, communities, etc for support in these things.
What WOULD be a good use of such an LS would be people who already know eachother, like a church group, or a , I dunno, homosexual gathering to all play together and start an LS not in support of their cause, but because they already know each other and it, through the game, enhances what they do OUTSIDE of the game. But to link up with people in-game to support yourself is kinda desparate and shows a lack of mental well being. I would, if I were them, put down the controller/ put away the keyboard, get out, and find people you can look in the eye and explore your issues whatever they may be and draw support from them, not a lvl 53 drk/21 war Galka named Tonsoffun

Dale, you almost made a perfect post, if you had just left out the "those people are desperate" part. Without that it would have been 100% factual and nothing could be argued. By calling someone desperate you basically invite a response of "No, I am not!", and it all goes round from there again. Good post tho.

Pseulen, well, not sure what to say, I thought it was obvious that my first post that started this topic had a good amount of sarcasm. I shall take greater care to make that obvious.

As far as Valec's response and free speech, all fun and games, but for everyone's sake, try to voice your opinions in the right forum. Opinion wasn't asked for, nor did it contribute anything at the time, posted for reasons unknown. If I overreacted, I apologize, was certainly not my intend to make a big deal out of nothing.

As far as slander goes, and not getting into definitions of whats slander and libel, I believe nothing said on these boards is slander. While events were represented in a biased manner, they are nontheless true, at least that is my understanding of it, until someone who really knows says otherwise. The opportunity to do so was there, and it hasn't happened, which pretty much means it's fact and not slander.

semantics...perhaps malign comments would have been a better choice of words, but you had to have gotten what I was trying to convey. regardless of whether or not they were true...the point to that entire thread wassss? I still dont know. There was a lot of profanity, a lot of talk about their sex in a very offensive manner. This HAD to put a damper on a lot of ppl's day by the subject of this post. Am I being overly sensitive? I takes A LOT to offend me to be honest, but that was just so malicious and disgusting.

Dale, as far as what a LS is meant for, I've always looked at it as a form of community. And so what if someone wants to be part of a GBLT LS. I mean if someone wants to sit down and mess around in game and chat for a few hours while they run around and do what ever, how's that a waste of the monthly fee if they enjoy it.

Hell, I don't level that much these days but I still log in and chat with the Prarie Bears because it's a hell of a lot easier than inviting them all over to my house to talk.

Fact is there's a lot of things you can do in this game and a very big one is socializing, and if you think that the only good LS is one to find you pt's and help you finish quests, I'd hate to say it, but you're missing out.

and since this is the flame board, here's my obligatory flame:

OMFWTFSFTULOLZROTFLMAOBBQUSB!!!!

What I don't understand is...

Are christian cures more effective than nonchristian cures?

Are gay nukes better than straight nukes?

I don't see what any of it has to do with the game...
