DOUBLE HEADER! WOOHOO! This one at least is rather more manageable than the previous one.

So.

First off, let me begin by saying fuck your Gamerscore. I don't give a shit about it, and neither should you.

Secondly, let me continue by saying fuck your achievement-based mentality that's slowly beginning to infect the real world.

See, we get enough of this kind of crap already; we don't need to formalize a system for it.

Foursquare, for example, is such a system.

In ye olden pre-internet, pre-social media days, we were mostly just subjected to people bragging about the places they've been and the things they've seen. It was irritating then, and it still is.

For the record, travel, contrary to popular opinion, does not broaden the mind. It doesn't do much of anything, really. It's simply a relocation of the physical shell your mind occupies, and an arguably more accurate set of sensory inputs regarding a specific object or set of objects.

You have seen the Pyramids. Woohoo.

Talk to me when you build one. Then I might give a shit, and I might think you've learned something. Oh, you saw the suffering of people who weren't born with the advantages you had? Oh dear, am I supposed to be impressed that you managed to figure something out when it was functionally bludgeoned into your frontal lobes?

If you couldn't empathize with people without seeing their plight in person, you are seriously self-centered.

Anyhoo.

You realize that Foursquare is just the beginning. That sort of achievement system is almost undoubtedly going to become more common, and more pervasive. And eventually it's going to be fully integrated into a system that's more successful than Foursquare.

Like Facebook.

Hell, I'd be extremely surprised if they weren't already working on a way to integrate significant achievement/trophy systems into the platform already. With the explosion in the smartphone market, it's only a matter of time really.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the various OS manufacturers were looking into a way of doing it. Just wait till your iPhone does more with your location and browsing info than forward it to Apple for data mining! Soon, it'll reward your exploitation with new and interesting iTrophies! Then you can be the pretentious twat at your next party talking about how you managed the Wonderful World trophy, by visiting all the existing ancient and modern wonders of the world!

I'd go gay for you Raes.
