Activision threatens to stop supporting sony

Sony won't pull support unless they know they are fucked, Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, EA, Konami and Capcom have very good relations with Sony and Square, I think Sony has got a guy on their board of directors. Even without Activision, Sony can still rely on those other companies easily. It'll be Activision who loses.

I know Gerry. I'm just saying that if Activision pulls support, nothing of value would be lost, haha.

I mean you have points.. But dont fall into that videogames are not effected by the recession stuff. Those reports were all within a month of being hit by it lol.. I read the same stuff. Game sales are at a monster low now, partly due to the lame games available for the last few months.. But for sure driven by recession.

I never said that games are *not affected* by the economic downturn, I said they are *one of the least effected entities*. This still holds true now (comparatively speaking obviously). There are more reports that hit at the end of '08, which was well past the startin' line of the recession.

Look at how it destroyed Killzone 2. The game has yet to sell a Million units in the US.

I wouldn't be so sure that the economical state of the country is the reason for that... KZ2 is probably just not that good, havin' played it and all. Realize that there are games that have sold a million copies since the beginning of the recession and so many more that have just flat out, out-sold KZ2 without excuses.

It's genre vs region there. 360 is centered in the USA and that's where shooters sell. Quality help but if Halo 3 was on PS3 it wouldn't have broke 2M. Killzone 2 on 360 would have sold 4 mill easy. Sony must of been hoping KZ2 would move consoles, maybe at $300.

They aren't going anywhere. I believe CoD4 and CoD:WaW each sold over a million on the PS3. Now they sold more copies on the 360 but moving over a million units will keep there big titles on PS3 at least.

Oh no, not Activision. They'll take so many good things with them, like...

uh...

Alot of you have a point. At first I was like, I hope they don't stop supporting Sony, but now I think of it, all they got I care for is Modern Warfare and maybe Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I have not played Ultimate Alliance yet due to a busy schedule but have it on the shelf with some other games I have yet to play.

The Guitar Hero games were only fun for awhile but they were pretty much just a fad.

Activision really seems to becoming the next EA, i.e. gaming asshats and morons XD ah well. This is one thing he does at least make sense on. Call of Duty was the only game in that brief list I have any care of and now that it's more Modern Warfare well.. hmm..ah well

Whereas EA are actually becoming good developers now. Ironic twist of fate.

Do not give them that much credit. There is nothing special EA them selves have done in a long while.

Deadspace and Mirrors Edge is all i think of. Anything else was just them outbidding someone for the control of a company or buying into a game.

The Call of Duty series seems to be continuin' the old school war thing. Word on the street is that the next CoD is goin' to be about the Vietnam War. Modern Warfare, again, is no longer under the Call of Duty brand.

Is DICE (Mirror's Edge) like Visceral Games (Dead Space) though? I know VG was once EA Redwood Studios but I think DICE is like Bioware, a studio like Bungie once was, practically owned by a company but as far as development goes, unaffiliated. I'm not sure how it all works out though so I could be wrong.

But Modern Warfare is still under Activision right?

And EA has had some good games. I liked Dead Space, Mirror's Edge and Spore :P and some other stuff looks fun like Dante's Inferno. Who knows what more they might come out with worthwhile. They aren't bad anymore imo but they aren't good. They are mediocre I guess.

I wouldn't necessarily say under. It's under Infinity Ward and, so long as they can, I'd imagine, is *published* by Activision. It's exactly the relationship Bungie and MS have, now, with the Halo brand but no so much as their prior relationship.

It's pretty stupid to downplay the damage losing Activision support would do to Sony, but I don't see it being particulary good business for Activision especially on their higher selling titles. At first I thought it was a good thing(for PS3 not for Sony) to force a price drop, but now that I think about it, this is a bad situation overall for everyone. Sony is never going to admit to a price drop before a price drop, and Activision making a price drop seem more imminent(or alternatively, a big loss of support for PS3) is actually going to have an opposite effect, the stalling of PS3 sales. Consumers will either assume a price drop is coming soon and wait for the price drop, or that Activision will drop support, and that'll make em less likely to buy. It's a better threat to have made in private.

I agree it is rediculous to downplay the support of Activision.

I can't believe they didn't try this behind closed doors first, but they probably didn't get the results they wanted from Sony. Going public about it would pretty much force Sony to do something, or it'd seriously hurt their image/sales.

A move like this just shows how a major developer is not pleased with their private dealings with Sony; and if a developer as big as Activision is this pissed at Sony, all of the smaller developers definitely feel the same way.

I don't know, maybe they're just completely overconfident that their move will make Sony immediately drop the price. But Sony is in reality a bloated, global corporation that doesn't make quick reactions to external pressures like that. I think they have amazing engineering talent which is why I'm a fan of the technology but they are obviously too deep in bureaucracy to do anything that hasn't been well planned out in advance.

My guess is in this case, the price drop was already on the way so this whole drama isn't going anywhere, but it might be a tense month or two if it's coming at the end of the summer. Are they going to sacrifice millions of dollars by dropping the price when they can still get sales at $400 for another couple months just to save face? WOULD they be saving face by appearing to cave into Activisions demands? I don't know.

I can get my activision games on the 360 so this is no skin off my back. I haven't even bought any activision since 2007 and might not this year either unless I decide to get MW2... but less PS3 support means that somewhere down the pike, some PS3 game I would have liked never gets made because less PS3 owners to buy it. That's a shame for everyone with a PS3 and doesn't help anyone.

I dunno Baja, Activision has gotten a mighty "big peen syndrome" after having sales like with Modern Warfare and merging with Blizzard.. they think they're the "gods of gaming" now lol. They might be the only ones bitching and with any real concern. I'd like to know what the other developers/publishers think :P

Obviously it's to every dev's advantage if every one of the consoles is as low price as possible. Therefore no dev is going to "disagree" they want PS3's price lowered, assuming they develop on PS3 at all. But ultimately the question becomes about production cost to build each PS3. A $300 PS3 will be selling quite a lot but it's not going to suddenly shoot past the 360 and Wii in combined hardware. If it's ever going to make a shitload of sales it's going to do it at $200 with FF13 and GT5 launching.
