It's really depressing but it looks like the AF+1 is much much better then the relic. The CHR bonus on +1 seems to outweigh the one on the relic. Any reason to this or am I missing something with the relic? lol

I think it's because all of the "unique" bonuses on relic were then given to every bst as SE kept on updating and as such it's been making the things that made bst relic worthwhile outdated.

AF+1 for Charm (the JA), Relic for Call Beast

Except for Relic Gloves, I don't think any of it is worth upgrading at all. The rest of it is junk.

You can overlook the CHR bonus when other pieces can be substituted in for the CHR.

And I'm sure most BSTs will agree that the more CHR you stack on the more diminishing it becomes... or due to how random Charm is anyway it's not worth the effort.

BST is depressing, overall. =p

That, and Trainer's Gloves offer the same amount of +CHR 4 levels sooner

Not to put down BST, I mean, I love the core of the job (charming, pet suicides, assisted suicide by pets, rape) but I see little to no use for extra duration since it's pathetically low as the mob levels scale past Even Match and even then there's not really a situation which calls it.

Otherwise your life pretty much falls into these situations:

  • No pets available; jug pets used
  • Pets way too tough to charm and use reliably; familiar used
  • Pets way too weak (below DC) to use, duration of 10~ mins is sufficient for whatever purpose you're planning
  • None of the above; asked to come on a more useful job
Lower level (60) BSTs might find extra duration helpful, but if you're relying on that on an Even Match pet then you have issues (at an EXPing). My view of the AF is to help you adjust/play better until it's all gotten rid of altogether (or stored).

However, one use for duration is farming, charming an Decent Challenge or even Even Match pet and then fighting weaker mobs... but then again that's nothing a [Leave] and [Charm] (with the risk of a pissed off mob attacking you at mischarm) can't fix.

Relic helm is good for charm too. The other pieces can be macro'd if you really want to be a 100% BST.(Relic Boots and Body for reward)

I'm not sure about the actual numbers of what +charm gear does.
But I love my charm set, I use :
AF2 head, AF2 body, AF1+1 Hands, AF1+1 Legs, AF1+1 Feet, AF2 Belt , Omega Ring , Heaven's Ring , Apollo Staff, Star Necklace(+20 Charm and alot of CHR but not as much as Osode BST). With this I very rarely fail charm on EM and I never have to worry about uncharm.

I've never really bother with stacking +Charm gear (that doesn't have any +CHR on it that is). After a fight, and my pets not dead, I'd rather just Release -> Charm it again to reset the timer.

I would pretty much do the same during XP/farming fights but when low manning some NMs I found having charm+ to be very useful.

For example: Hakutaku
I did this the first time round with 2 other BSTs and found that we were forced to charm the odd tough Million Eyes, charm+ came in handy as they would sometimes live longer then the standard tough pet timer. The last thing you need in a fight like this is the NM AND your pet attack you XD.

It takes me about +32 CHR to go from "might be able to charm" to "should be able to charm" on EMs with some resistance.

BST AF+1 is some of the best +1 AF out there. I wear three pieces in my charm set, and two have no CHR before they're upgraded. As well hs having the best, or close to the best CHR, they also have Charm+. It's not the reason for using them, but its a nice bonus, especially for mobs approaching EM.

I can't think of any reason to upgrade relic gloves unless you were looking for the whole relic +1 set.

I keep hearing about CHR being useless, and diminishing returns on charm. Maybe the +40ish CHR gear I used isn't high enough to see those diminsihing returns. For me though BST AF+1 is among the best charm gear there is.

After god knows how many levels of pet levelling I've found gauge to be useless, and up to a point, CHR.

As reflected back in some good old days in Bibiki Bay, a BST partner with me just charms in melee gear and bloody charms fine, I charm in over 40 CHR gear and mischarmed a lot more times than him.

And then there's the stories of BSTs mischarming rabbits in East Ronfaure

Based on those reasons and facts I find it can also be mentally affected, myself. If you charm (I know it really doesn't make a difference but it feels like it to me) with "fear" (thinking it'll mischarm) it's likely going to happen, whereas if you just "go for it" it seems to work more, regardless of the CHR gear you've got on.

My DRK/BST charm rates seem to be better than my BST/NIN (or whatever else) charm rates too.

Or is Charm some hidden skill similar to Chocobo Digging

That's because SE is secretly nerfing your solo way of life all those jobs and not a single exp pt?

blasphemy

Monster Gaiters have a better mod for Reward than Beast Gaiters, so they're definitely better. +20% HP vs. +10% HP. Zetas, I found the order of usefulness went Artifact < Suzaku's < Relic.

AF+1 is just sick... Same for my blm: I like the stats from AF+1 more than relic mostly because we use our AF more often than we use our relic (at least with blm and bst, in my experience). All of the gear is useful, but relic is more situational. During the right situations, relic is badass.

But, for bst, the defensive additions of AF+1 over regular AF are awesome, and the pants are just sick.
