So I bought AoC not long ago, good game. Anyway that isn't the point. I went and bought a new power supply so I can crossfire dual 3870's, and 2 additional 1g sticks of ram. Fair enough, simple enough upgrade. I ensured I bought the correct ram (ballistix crucial), with the same speeds. My brother, who has an identical pc save the type and speed of ram did the same.

So here is my problem. I installed the 2 new sticks of ram along with my other 2, but AoC's opening credits crash the game. His does aswell. It only works with the original 2 gigs(haven't tried it with ONLY the two new ones, but I doubt that is the problem.) We go to the AoC forums to check for similar problems, and some people seem to be having it, but for a completely different reason than more RAM.

We tried going onto WoW and there is no problem, even with the opening credit, so we can only assume the problem lies in AoC.

Any ideas on way additional ram wouldn't allow cinematics to load, or stop a game from running completely? :(

Try with the 2 new sticks. If the problem is only happening when you put in the 2 new ones there is a chance you got bad ram.

I've tried all possible combinations with the 4 sticks, but the problem persists :(.

Possible motherboard issue? Maybe need a BIOS update or something..

I'd head over to http://www.memtest.org/ and download memtest86+ and run that from a bootable CD. Try different combinations of the sticks of ram in different slots. Try all four at once for the first test, though.

i tried installing two sticks along with the 2 i have in right now, and they dont even show up in my RAM, they show up in my nvidia Ntune program as being installed, but the ram isnt showing in windows.
Im just gonna leave it as is since ill buy a new pc soon anyway

Very strange problem. It sounds like an incompatibility problem. How much RAM does it show you have while it is booting up?

it shows 1.5GB which is what i normally have, but i had added two 512s and they dont show up, same brand, speed etc

yes im getting nasty FPS lag my self, and i have a 9800 and 4 gigs of ram.. SLIGHTLY CONFUSED HERE (running it at 15 FPS with it at medium and alot of otehr stuff turned down)

have you tried use high setting then turn off shadow thing?

yeh that high setting with shadow removal made the game work wonderful, better than playing on low!

yes i think my video card needs more power? the 9800 has to places to connect power to, should i try putting two in..

Heh, yeah ... if you don't have a strong enough power supply, it doesn't matter what your rig is running lol

no i just needed to plug in the second power cord, which the card didnt come with BUT my power supply did :) YEAHH SON!

Nope, just running with 2, and deleting the shader cache's every once in a while. Thanks :)

Last post above mentions it, but here's the link on the AoC forums.

AoC FPS "Fix"

Basically, the game runs better with settings on high, shadows off and Shader 2.0 settings. I was pulling <15FPS with settings I should easily be able to support, and then I did this fix and jumped up to 30+FPS in populated areas and I've seen as high as 120 FPS in solo instances.

As for the RAM issue, does your MOBO support 4 sticks of RAM? I know it has 4 slots, but I ran across a motherboard that wouldn't support the 4 slots being occupied. so I had to settle for 3 sticks. I found this info in my manual for the MOBO.

I've been told some people can't access the AoC forums...

Spoiler:
Press ESC *or F10*.
Go to Video Options.
Click "High". I don't care if your computer sucks. Click it and shut up.
Go to the Advanced Tab.
Disable shadows completely.
If you are on a laptop, scroll down to the system texture cache bar and maximize it.
Click Apply, then OK.

Another fix I found, though your mileage may vary, is something called Age of Conan Quick Start

Here

What is Age of Conan Quick Start?
Age of Conan Quick Start is a tool to influence the Age of Conan startup. Age of Conan offers several command line switches normal users don't have access to. Using a little trick Age of Conan Quick Start puts you into a position to use any of the otherwise unusable command line switches. Age of Conan Quick Start doesn't modify or even read any processes, files or settings of Age of Conan so it is not banable.

Current features:
- skip all intro movies
- adjust Windows scheduler timer settings to improve framerates (FPS boost)
- delete local shader caches before startup
- adjust process priorities and enable dynamic thread boosts
- adjust Age of Conan's processor affinities

Planned for next versions:
- "Ultra Quick Start" modus to start client without having to start the patcher first
- better GUI (localisation, help texts)

How do I install Age of Conan Quick Start?
Age of Conan Quick Start offers a comfortable Setup that will do all the changes neccessary to your system to be able to use Age of Conan Quick Start.

How does the trick work that is used by Age of Conan Quick Start?
Windows NT based systems offer the possibility to assign a debugger to any application you want. If you define such a debugger for an application whenever the given application is started, the debugger is started instead. Age of Conan Quick Start assigns kind of a mini debugger to the Age of Conan client. As soon as the ConanPatcher tries to start the Age of Conan client (ageofconan.exe) this mini debugger is launched instead. The mini debugger is able to modify the command line with which the Age of Conan client is started. You can find more information about the used technique here: http://blogs.msdn.com/junfeng/archive/2004/04/28/121871.aspx

How do I deactivate or remove Age of Conan Quick Start?
If you want to temporarily deactivate Age of Conan Quick Start just deactivate the "Enable Age of Conan Quick Start" checkbox within the Age of Conan Quick Start configuration tool. If you want to remove Age of Conan Quick Start entirely just use the uninstall shortcut in your start menu.

What operating systems are supported?
Age of Conan Quick Start is developed for and tested with the following operating system versions:
  • Windows Vista x86 SP1 and above
  • Windows Vista x64 SP1 and above
  • Windows XP x86 SP2 and above
Other versions of Windows like Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP x64 might work as well but were not tested.
