AGP or PCI?

I'm trying to get a new video card for my computer so that I can play XI on either medium settings or full. I'm getting an Nvidia GeForce 6800. Now, there's three choices I see, AGP, PCI, and PCI Express. I'm a bit retarded when it comes to computers, so you'll have to excuse me. But what in God's name do these things mean? And how do I find out what my computer has?

It has to do with your motherboard. PCI-e is what most companies are starting to go with but they are pretty new and unless you bought your pc within a year or so i soubd you have PCI-e. AGP is more common and probably what you have. Not as good as PCI-e but better than PCI. PCI is the worst and is pretty old. But like i said its mother board that lets you know what type of card to get as a PCI-e wont work on agp etc. Also alot of newer cards need a powersupply so make sure you have a large enough PS so that you can run your card.

Ah, I see. Alright, thanks.

PCI express

Go for a PCI express, more compatabile with current CPU's and the wave of the future. If you are trying to compare PCI regular vs. AGP go with AGP, but AGP vs. PCI express I'd take the express any day of the week.

PCI express is definitly the way to go. AGP is on the way out. If you are buying a new motherboard get one with PCI-E. If you have an agp board and just want to upgrade the video card, that works but keep in mind agp is on the way out. Production of new cards is switching to PCI E as it has higher capabilities.

PCI-E if your mobo supports it. If not, then upgrade mobo.

Well, considering what most of you have said, I'd go with PCI-E, but I doubt my motherboard supports it. I have an HP Pavillion and I got it Christmas of '03, so I doubt it does. Also, I'm on a strict price limit of around 300-400 max, and I'm already getting 1 gig of RAM and then the Nvidia GeForce 6800.

So if anyone can find me a motherboard that is pretty cheat with PCI-E, go for it, but I doubt there is. I guess I'll go with AGP for now, then in a year or two, upgrade.

Due to your situation, just go with AGP.

Until you upgrade mobo and CPU it just wouldnt be worth it. Especially since its a company bought PC. FFXI will play just fine on it anyway. I play FFXI on my older system that I put together with all the parts ive just accumulated through upgrading.

:) which gives me my high end PC for playing other games while I LFG on FFXI.

Heh, alright, thanks for the tip. I would have ended up keeping the AGP for a lot longer if I hadn't known PCI-E was taking over.

NEITHER!

PCI-Express x16^^

Yea... go with what Isa said... I'm sorry I didnt read all the posts before I posted - .-; I just love PCI-E that much :P

heh, alright. Thanks all. I'll probably get a new motherboard with PCI-E, then a new graphics card PCI-E after a year or so.

Well you need to do some research before getting Geforce 6800

There is 6800 used in PCI-E and AGP, you need to know which motherboard can support, and you need to know the watt power it needs for examples

eVGA 256-A8-N397-TX Geforce 6800GS 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130264

"Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply.
An available 4-pin Molex hard drive power dongle "

and you need to know which port it used, if you port doesn't work, you need a converter lol

If you need a new Motherboard you need to know what motherboard you need, AMD or intel, (AMD more recommend for gaming usage). if you want not too fancy not too expenive or cheap one you may want

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136165

DFI LanParty UT RDX200 CF-DR Socket 939 ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 CrossFire ATX AMD Motherboard

if you got intel processor

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130517

MSI 945G Neo-F Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G ATX Intel Motherboard

and you know you need the processor chips lol, so you gonna spend like $400+ more

well I suggest you buy a graphic card that your current computer can support

and once you have enough money, you can custom build your computer or buy a new one from a company

check out http://www.newegg.com/ a lot of cheap and fair price for computer stuff in there :D

Van those are nice. But if you're going to upgrade to PCI-e I would seriously recommend getting a MB that can support SLI technology. You never know when you might come across the cash to add another video card and if you did you would not regret it. Plus it would work just fine with only one video card.

Edit: oh I would also recommend just going Intel. AMD are nice sometime but intel is just a much more reliable chip.

remember he said he was short on cash? around 300-400, those link and stuff I showed is base on the budget AxelXII had

lol and I already got SLI tech on my system :O
<3 my Dual Geforce 7800 256MB GTX SLI enabled too bad FFXI doesn't work great with SLI, when it enabled, it make character flickering (disappearing and reappearing) and I do think you need motherboard that also support SLI

Edit: Intel is nice and reliable but AMD work better on gaming and if you have dual core is aswomely sweet :P, I heard intel also making dual core now

Edit2: AxelXII need to tell us how many memory and processor speed, he had, is kinda hard to find a right component for him :P
