So what's the battle system like? According to that review it sounds like you have to do a certain amount of rank 1 moves to chain into rank 2 etc etc. Is this for the warrior/assassin class only? Or does it apply to magic casting and ranged as well?

Applies to Chanter as well...I have a mage going on now too but not too far into it...but with Chanter I was able to use chain combos.

The combat system is referred to as a "reactive" combat system in that you have to react to what happens as you fight. It isn't just mashing buttons over and over.

Many abilities trigger second and third abilities depending on how/when you use them. Other abilities, like counterattacks, are only able to be used when your character parries or dodges an incoming attack. Still others require the use of certain weapons.

For example, my ranger may be kiting something with a bow and as the distance closes, has need to pull out swords to fight up close and regain the upper hand. Stuff like that makes Aion combat a little more interesting than your typical buttonmasher.

It forces you to pay attention to the combat situation and adapt to what is happening. In pvp especially, it is extremely fast paced, so you have to be keen on what your opponent is likely to do and anticipate what they will come at you with and react accordingly if you want to win.

I made a Scout on Siel today. I like the reactive battle, keeps it more interesting than WoW was and the chaining for combo's is pretty cool. I'm only level 12 now, I hope that the chaining becomes more involved, right now I don't have too many options. I'd like to see where you have to chain weaker moves in a number of ways to generate more powerful attack. I like the idea of having to strategize your chains to use your more powerful abilities rather than just putting them all on a timer like most MMO's I've played.

I hope the fights in flight don't become too too involved because I'm very, very bad at flying right now and I don't think I could do intricate movements to avoid attacks and such.

As I said before, it does look a lot like WoW, but it's different enough to not be a clone and is definetly able to stand on it's own two feet.

My complaints: No auto-loot, I mean seriously how hard is it to give us that.
Can't rotate the camera without changing your direction during auto run. Maybe there is a way to do this but I haven't found it. I like to rotate and look around while I'm running in a straight line. Another thing, it tends to leave me in combat after I've killed whatever I was fighting, not a huge deal really but it gets annoying after awhile because it triggers that battle music.

How can you not like the battle music? :P Just busting your balls. But the music is awesome, I haven't heard any that I don't enjoy listening to.

I like the battle music, I just dont like it going all the time, like when I'm just running around and for some reason I'm still in combat. I know it's a trivial thing but I don't like manually switching from combat stance every few minutes.

XD

I dunno about you, but I kind of like being able to just stand around in a quiet area, bust out the weapons and then rock out in the middle of nowhere. XD

You can turn the battle music off completly if it bugs you too much, under the audio tab near the bottom just uncheck "use battle BGM" and it will play the normal music for the area all the time.

So it's kind of like you do a chain 1 move and you have a certain amount of time to go to chain 2 then after 2 into 3? I take it then there isn't a real long "casting", in WoW for hunter the casting time is reloading your ammo then the speed of your weapon, time on spells and ranged attacks? Or for magic there's just an extended gap to allow for casting?

The counter-attack moves I can understand easily. It's like on parry moves in WoW.

I wasn't aware of named enemies like NMs!

I found a named Daru called Hammer Hoof Durin in Munihele Forest, and he dropped a couple items for me: Durin's Chain Boots and Durin's Leather Belt.

Yep there's NM all around. Though most of the time from what I've seen, they look like regular enemies. Might be a bit larger and I guess sometimes they are different color and of course they are named. I've only seen a different colored one as an Elyos though. I don't know how the spawns work so far I've just randomly encountered them in areas with normal mobs of their type. Most seem to have some kind of extra ability that makes them harder to deal with.

I actually haven't seen any in a while on my asmodian. Last one I saw was a black petroleum type near the gurger village and that was 2 betas ago.

Some abilities are instant, yes and those are typically the ones that chain. You have a small window of opportunity to use the next ability in the chain to keep it going. If you use a different ability than the next step in the chain, your chance to chain is lost to cooldowns.

Others abilities have longer cast times. For example, the cleric has both an instant heal and a larger 6 second cast heal. Not everything is instant, but the pace of combat is pretty quick in Aion.
