All Hail the God Emperor! (40k MMO)

It varies. Dealing with that sort of swarm rush army can be difficult, depending on the terrain you're playing with. On a dense board, where you're not going to get many chances to shoot under even optimal conditions, you're frequently better off going with a mechanized force. The transports themselves might add a fairly significant amount of firepower as well, depending on what army you play.

The major weakness of the Tau lies in the their lack of squad level heavy weapons. While a few Broadsides might offer a pretty serious amount of anti-tank and a modest amount of anti-troop, they're expensive and not overly mobile, so they can't be everywhere at once. Eldar have the same problem, albeit in a less pronounced form, incidentally.

Taking a Mechanized Infantry force offers the advantage that you're very hard to pin down, can choose your time to engage, whittle down the opposition with long-range vehicle fire where available, and let's be honest, of the two major armies prone to try and swarm you under in close combat (Orks and Nids), neither one is particularly dangerous at long range.

Battlesuits with the right gear can also help a lot on that front. The generic Tau Missile Pod (the S7 Assault 2 one) makes for a nice, versatile weapon mount. And being able to move, fire, move should keep you reasonably safe.

The most fun game I ever played was my Tyranids vs. a friends Orks. 30~ Gretchin surrounding a Carnifex = lol. The first 15 or so are just to boost combat rolls so they actually stand a chance of damaging it. My Carnifex was Squig Injected with like 3 or 4 wounds left :( We ignored points and went all in. Since his Ork army dwarfed my Tyranids in both numbers and points, I supplemented them with my Genestealer Cult(Which was just a small, basic fielding.) My Magus ended up being run down by an out of control bike.

Though for awesome moments, nothing beats the Yarrick(Since my secondary army was IG)/Thraka(same friend) showdown we had at one point.

Tyranids are helpless against almost all forms of vehicles, outside of the rare occurances where a Carnifex/Hive Tyrant gets close enough to Rend it (and the Shoot the Big Ones rule should rule this out completely if you have a Hammerhead). Only Genestealers are dangerous, and you can single them out efectively enough. Gun drones were actualy my favorite way of moping up Tyranid squads. Because they were fast enough to get out in front, cheep enough that i could loose them, and they had enough shots to deal cripling damage to genestealer squads (6+ save isnt stopping anything but Lasguns, lol)

Devilfish are a godsend against Bugs, 3 weapons which ignore armor saves, basicly unhurtable by anything without rending claws.

Honestly, I'm more afraid of Jetpack troopers playing my Tau than I am Tyranids. They close the distance way too fast, and can completely ignore any form of fodder squads or vehicles i put in the way.

Orcs I HATE playing against. Especialy as my Mariens. God damn Coppas! And they tend to have power fists and shit, which mess up light vehicles good.

Whats the difference against warhammer and warhammer 40k? (OH GOD I'M GONNA DIE IN HERE)

Where do you guys get your miniatures, anyway? I'm starting to try to get into 40k, and finding that it's got nothing to do with the year it's in, and everything to do with the number of dollars the minis cost...

Favorite moments for me include (from 2nd Ed) a 5000 point game that took two turns before I'd destroyed pretty much everything significant, a game in which I rolled 16 ones on about 20 dice, a single lascannon shot that destroyed 3 tanks and a command squad, and a game in which a single Plasma missile, thanks to scenario rules, destroyed 1500 points of Nids. Also the fact that my Dreadnaughts literally went 13 games in a row without ever hitting anything with their lascannons.

Not nearly as many funny moments from 3rd/4th though, which probably has more to do with GW eliminating that sort of randomness from the game rather than me having less fun with it. I've got BOATS of 2nd Ed stories.

Warhammer is a fairly normal Tolkien-esque fantasy setting, albeit with gunpowder and talking frogs. Warhammer 40K is set 40,000 years into the future, and is a gothic, post-apocalyptic, everyone-hates-everyone sci-fi game. The Penny Arcade comic referenced earlier is pretty accurate, lol.

I have certain advantages, mostly that I've had something like 15 years to collect my various armies. I have miniatures older than GW's target audience.

I didn't know anything about W40K or knew anyone that played the tabletop until I was hired by THQ... I really didn't know it was this popular.

Oh god I don't know how many times my mortar teams have put other squads under friendly fire. Why I kept fielding them was a mystery to even me.

The game is huge. Its the D&D of tabletop games (counting 40k and fantasy as one here)

Its just so mind bogglingly fun to play.

That's the first thing I thought about when I saw the thread title. I was hopin for a Dune MMO.

if done right, I bet it could be an awesome MMO :P (really I think it'd be better as a single player game going through the story)

Heheh... I used the Flank March card (2nd Ed again folks) on a Dreadnaught once, and my buddy Mike had but one thing on hand to stop it, his Inquisitor with the Vortex power. So he decided that the Marine combat squad between him and the Dread was an acceptable sacrifice and cast the power through them.... only to have it come up 1/2" short, and promptly reverse course and eat the Inquisitor in the next Psychic Phase.

Mike's luck was so bad we generally just referred to it as "Cosmic Misfortune". His IG force would frequently destroy itself trying to shoot me.

The way yall describe it it sounds like Heroes of Might and Magic Duneons and Dragons style. How is it going to be a MMO?

Since MMOs are basically graphical chat rooms with hidden dice rolls, the transition is perfect.

The only real difficulty would be determining how much ranged combat you really want to emphasize, and how you want to handle it when you do. I can't see the FF style of interface working all that incredibly well for a 40k MMO.

PlanetSide.

But with a third-person view for melee combat.

Are you going to be one character, like in FFXI, or control squads?

Just like Savage.

Yeah, just like Savage. I totally forgot about that game. I just wish the RTS part didn't suck so much balls.

But the PlanetSide analogy makes more sense, since theres undoubtedly going to be vehicles. If there isn't this game will be full of fail.

As long as they dont add Dreadnaughts as Vehicles. Because that'd throw flavor right out the window.
