Have you ever been kicked from a LS for making a joke? Not to sound sarcastic, but does this always happen? I mean, I am fairly new to this game of FFXI, and I admit I have a lot of learning to do. But since when is it so wrong to joke with someone? Using an emotion to express how you feel at that current time? Imagine that! I thought it would be ok, and I was kicked from said LS without so much as a warning. I'm not particularly worried about it, because since then I have found another LS that I call home, but I was just wondering. Have any of you ever experienced this type of treatment in-game?

depends on how personal it gets. Also on how touchy the person your cracking a joke at too~

It depends on the culture of the linkshell, and the sort of joke you made. Did it have racial or religious overtones? Was it excessively sexual? Was it cruel?
There's always a line, no matter how tight-knit you think you are with someone. ALWAYS. That line will be in different places, and will consist of different subject matter depending on what kind of relationship you're in with other people, but it's there.
If you don't know somebody that well, then the line is closer, and more strict. The newer you are to any given person, the easier it is to cross it. It's the same with a group of people, as in a linkshell. It may be a game, but don't let the fact that everyone's speech is represented in pixels let you forget that they are real people -- not colorful NPCs.
In my opinion, a "line" exists no matter how closely you get to know somebody, and while it may not be true for some people, there are jokes that are never, ever appropriate. Even with my best friends in the entire world, or my own brothers and sisters, I know that there's some things that I just would NOT joke about ... unless I was specifically aiming to be cruel, hurtful, or humiliating.
Where this line for your linkshell, however, would be entirely dependent on the specific culture within the group. You may post the joke here, and whether it seems mild or completely uncalled for to most of us, it doesn't mean squat regarding whether or not it was appropriate to kick you for it. It's the needs of the group that dictate that.

Well, the reasoning behind the joke isnt really that important. But there was this certain person to be left unnamed, who was powerleveling a party that I had ended up being the leader of. I invited a BLM, and the party was doing faily decent. Almost complete chain5's most of the time, and I didnt see a problem with what was going on. I was leveling up my WAR at the time, and so I had the use of provoke, which I used when the main tank was waiting, to obtain the hate from the mob, so it would not kill the main tank, as I was a DD at the time. Well, I use provoke, and finally the main tank was able to re-provoke it, to gain the hate once again. Somewhere within this equation, the PL gets upset and says " DONT VOKE OFF OF ME EVER, DO YOU HEAR ME. I CAN TAKE ITS HATE, BLAH BLAH BLAH." Well, I make it a very known fact that I only voked to keep the pug from killing the poor tank. Well, then her powertrip only exceeds the previous one, when she starts telling the BLM how to do his job. Moreso causing the BLM to leave the party. I get upset, and so I type something similar to /em smacks .... upside the head with a wooden...nevermind. Well I figure out in the end that this said person is in my linkshell, so she questions me on what I meant.
"So you were gonna hit me with a wooden what? Come on, tell me."
So my smartass says something along the lines of...
"I was gonna say a wooden dildo, but I thought that it has been overused for the day."
{Hence the phrase in my signature.}
BAM >.> Out the LS I went. I spoke with a few members of the said LS, and was told to speak with the leader to get a new Linkpearl. But I just decided to opt out of that LS, and went with the current one I am in. I had no clue some people were so emotional about a joke, and I really didn't mean it to piss anyone off. There were even a few laughs about it before I was kicked, so I thought myself that it was all for the sake of being funny. I thought wrong, evidently.

Or tell the person that was PLn you that you would like to get hit to build up your parry, evasion, guard, sheild skills so that when PL becomes impractical you don't suck.

If you throw a Cur IV at someone that's in the red and it completly fills them up, you will have hate pretty much for the rest of the fight. It saves MP and if they have a piece of "refresh" equip like a Vermillion Cloak or a Nobles Tunic, that means your power leveler doesn't have to sit. Making it much easier to power lvl someone and also making it much faster and more effective.

Sorry, you are a little too strange for my linkshell. Besides if you came in thinking it was a sex ls you would just get booted right out. It's a KINKY linkshell. You can be kinky without having sex involved, but I don't think I'd want to have sex without kink involved. Figure that out and I might have some hope for you.
I kicked a guy who made a racist joke on MLK day of all days, and I got about 30 complaints so he had to go...
