3K is just not enough to make me budge. ;)

To Alla the Alla sites were his full-time employment, paying his bills, health insurance, caring for the family, retirement, etc etc, same with Illa afaik, plus they were paying part time coders such as Danalog to do some of the coding. Add bandwidth and server resource requirements, and you are looking at a whole lot of money that needs to be brought in every single month.

The monetaty cost to run QCDN is currently $1,285/year.
Between the premium subscription, the previously lower hosting cost ($60/month), and adsense I was able to pay for that and hand some of the cash back out in form of contest. Now that we are at $100/month for hosting things do not look as good anymore, but there is enough cash to pay for hosting, so it's all good.

If I had more money, I would hire a programmer that would customize the heck out of vBulletin to make this site really shine. There is a lot that can be done to make the site more userfriendly, more useful in terms of added features, and of course looks (though we should be getting that $250 FFXI themed skin any day now).

I would love to run contest where the rewards are such that they attract more than half a dozen entires and less than 50 votes.

I would love to pay someone to effectivly promote QCDN among other FFXI sites, as well as market it to advertisers.

I would love to put out that Quetzalcoatl Tribune thing monthly, there is any number of things that would either be possible, or would simply work better/more efficiently, if I had cash to throw at it.

Any of those things require major time committments from the people that would be involved. Most everyone is simply not willing to give up that much of their time for essentially nothing, and I don't blame them at all.

Anyway, the point is that a larger operating budget makes things easier on the owner/admin, and often better for the end-user.

Leave to go where?
Sure, some hardcore folks will leave, so what, at 6 million page views a day it doesn't matter much if you lose a couple hundred people. Content wins! 99.99999999% of those who bitch about RMT on QCDN have no problem using somepage, same with alla really, the ideologists will leave, everyone else will enjoy the new and speedy site that provides players with an exceptional collection of resources.
Dude, sell out and start a new site. Although, I think Sneaky might be upset about losing his postcount haha.

I would think $3k would be a tempting offer to take something that is a money and time sink for you, Sculli. I know you are gaining a lot of expierence from this, but then what? No one runs a site indefinitly without something in return. I'm kind of surprised you didn't pass it off for that.

Edit: As an afterthought...I wonder how much Azrail has been offered for his windower site.

$3k is tempting no doubt, and I could use it for sure, but while QCDN is a timesink for me at this time, I do have a couple of sites I want to launch for-profit sometime down the line, and having QCDN will help with that in terms of experience as well as linkbacks.

Google listed some 44k indexed QCDN pages not too long ago, and now we are unfortunately down to a whopping 47 indexed pages. NFC what happened, Google indexes seem to be all over for many other forums as well, so who knows what will happen in the future.

Selling QCDN and starting it elsewhere isn't as easy as it may sound. Contractual provisions would prevent that for the most part. No one in their right mind is paying someone else without to have a reasonable contract to back things up if needed.

I'm ok with that.

:shok:

Sculli should hire me to do something. I need a job. =(

Too bad I don't know crap about php or sql.

I think people'd pay NOT to see that... x_x
Unless you guys are weirder than I thought, at least...

Pfft. That woman is HOT.

Duke Nukem: Shake it baby!

A buddy of mine runs a site with a moderately active forum and a separate site that basically pays the bills for the first. It's been working that way for quite a few years now. If you enjoy running a site like this, Sculli, and have something that can help subsidize it, then you're still coming out ahead.

Then again, if it's more work than it's worth, that's obviously a harder decision.

Hiring a programmer may not necessarily be a necessity, granted it seems like the most logical thing to do. However, I'm sure given the community and base of users, there's enough of a talent pool to search for people willing to help out on the technical side.

For example, i am a bonified computer programmer by day (no seriously, I am, my degree has Ahnold's Signature on it), I wouldn't mind putting some of my programming abilities and know how to further projects and ideas within qcdn.org. There are more people who would be willing to do something like that than you think.
