Alpha Test System Requirements

Well to be honest, system requirements don't always mean as much. If a team develops the game well, the game can have oustanding graphics while having smaller requirements. Like Crysis for say, it still has the best graphics out of any game tech wise, but is no longer has the heaviest requirements. A good example would be Half-Life 2 when it released. That game looked amazing, but could run really smooth on medium PC's.

WoW needs to update theres. That 512 MB Ram really doesn't apply anymore. Try playing that game with that little of memory. It's impossible since the world is so big and processes so much. They've updated their graphic engine twice since release so yeah. Also Uzor, I like WoW's style just ok, but I like Final Fantasy XI's more. What I meant by beautfiul is the world itself and the tech behind it. It really is amazing what they accomplished (not visually, just software/hardware). The seamless world that is that massive, outstanding draw distance, vibrant colors and life, and being able to put that much in one zone with minimum requirements. It was a technical feat that hasn't quite been duplicated yet on the MMO front. The closest in LOTRO which is underrated big time. Conan, WAR, nor Aion have accomplished what those two did. Yeah, their graphics might be more "prettier", but on a tech level and scale, nope.

As far as Final Fantasy XIV. I trust SE will give us a beautiful game. Every game they put out pushed the graphics department. Final Fantasy VI looked amazing on the SNES. Final Fantasy VII started a whole new wave with cinematics, depth, and scale. Final Fantasy X pushed the PS2 very early in it's life cycle, and Final Fantasy XI was the best looking MMO on the market when it released in 2003. Final Fantasy XIII almost looks like it's running FMV the whole game. So yeah, I expect XIV to look just fine :)

Speaking of FFXIII, what amazed me the most about that game is that it barely has any loading times at all. It enhanced the gaming experience a lot to not have loading times. I mean, hell, Bayonetta has long loading times even when installed.

I think it might be important to distinguish some of the graphical capabilities of a PS3 and a PC for people like Uzor (no offense, just using your thread to make a point). Yeah, PS3 is capable of graphics that look great on an HDTV running at 1920x1080 30 fps MAX for most games with minimal if any AA.

There is very little comparison between the PS3's capabilities and that of a high-end PC. Especially with things like DX11 and all of the advanced shader techniques available to PC. Also, with an adequate rig your PC game is capable of running at a higher frame rate than a PS3 game (which as I said are typically optimized at 30fps if you're lucky).

Point being, games developed specifically for the PC are capable of looking much, much better than anything on consoles (Crysis). Hopefully FFXIV is going to at least hit a balance where both sets of gamers can be happy about their graphical fidelity.

Bit of a necro bump but bear with me… some of you might find this interesting/useful

So my old PC (3-4 years old):

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, OC @ 3GHz
5.5GB DDR2 RAM
1GB NVIDIA 7950GX2

Couldn’t really handle the Alpha build all too well. It played but at around 5-15 frames per second depending on where I was and what was going on.
In town very bad, outside in a field with nobody around was playable but still not great.

I had been planning to build a new system for sometime, so here it is:

Intel i7 920 (leaving it factory clocked for now)
6GB DDR3
1GB ATI HD 5850 - will upgrade or crossfire sometime in the future, when I can afford too :(
& a small SSD for running the OS and games only.

I haven’t had a chance to run any high-end games on it yet, only built the system yesterday and haven’t bought a PC game in a year since my old PC couldn’t run them very well. I’m sure I’ll have no issue with FFXIV but does anyone know of a good benchmark?

Next Alpha is tomorrow so will give it a go, if my GF lends me her account again :/

good old 3dmark maybe?

Been running with:

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (2.8GHz as it is)
Patriot Extreme Viper 6X2GB DDR3 1600MHz
Gigabyte GeForce GTX275 896MB
OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits

It's been a year now, no problem whatsoever. I tried a lot of stuff on that box so far and it seems to keep up still. The latest "heavy" game i played on it was Dragon Age: Origins and it showed absolutely no lag at all. I doubt I'll have issues playing FF14 when it will come out later :). I think my secondary rig will have more issues though.

Anybody who plays the alpha have something similar to:

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz (3.4GHz)
Patriot Extreme Performance 2X2GB DDR2 800MHz
ASUS GeForce 9600GT 512MB
Windows XP Professional 32 bits

and knows if it can handle it well? Because I really want to know if I'll be able to bounce between my 2 pcs to play due to my work D:.
