This is my first fan work. 20 some odd short stories, each revolving around one of the jobs of Vana'diel. I do a bit of writing, but not for any cash, though my friends all recommend I do.

*shrugs*

Here's the first on, enjoy.

The sword was a lot heavier than it looked. And it looked pretty damn heavy, slung over the mass of brawny muscle's shoulder, who more formally went by the name of Heavy Fists. The Galka twisted his head to the side and shifted his grip on the one hundred and fifty pound chunk of sharpened steel that was his sword.

He treasured it like a child, like every true warrior did. Built more for sever blunt damage, one did not need bother keeping a blade like his sharpened. It didn't need to be, for even a boulder with veins of mythril would shatter under the impact of such raw unhindered brute force.

"You sure he can handle his job? the guy doesn't look to intelligent..." The party's white mage, a diminutive Tarutaru, who was small even for his race, spoke out with his whiny voice.

Heavy Fists cocked an eyebrow and shifted his grip on the handle, this time a bit more meaningfully. The paladin spoke out, "Trust me, if it's the one thing he can do, it's make things hurt," he spoke with a chuckle, smiling at Heavy, who returned the easy going smile gratefully.

"Hmph, we'll see," was all the Tarutaru replied, crossing his arms and frowning. Heavy Fists glanced up and shielded his eyes from the hot altepen sun that beat down on them. This desert did not agree with his armor at all. A bead of sweat trickled down his forehead and came to rest upon the red visor on his face, only to be brushed to the side by his hamfist.

"God it's hot out here," before the Tarutaru could mouth a witty reply, the sound of their ranger crackled in on the party's linkshell.

"I got one, incoming!"

The paladin stepped forward, unsheathed his sword, and stood ready with his shield out. On cue, the ranger crested over the hill with a man sized beetle on his heels.

The paladin stepped forward into the sun and tilted his shield. The reflection off his polished white armor showed as a large bright spot on the sand. He then shifted, and the bright spot jerked, right over the beetle.

The beast shrieked as it's eyes focused involuntarily on the blinding armor. Stunned, the beast stumbled over itself onto the ground and rolled once, giving the ranger a chance to make his getaway.

The beetle righted itself and charged the paladin. Ready for this onslaught, he deftly stepped forward and smashed his shield into the beast, stunning it again.

That's where Heavy Fists came in. With a war cry that deafened the ears, he stepped forward and drove his sword down, crushing the beast's thick cartilage. It whimpered and scuttled to the side, only to be blasted with a sharp gale of wind from the black mage.

The beast gave a final twitch, before crumpling in a heap at the party's feet.

"Next," Heavy spoke, reassuming his languid pose, sword resting on his shoulder, one hand shielding his eyes from the sun.

Hope you guys enjoyed.

In a sudden flash of movement, the red blur that was Fredik dipped down and up underneath the orc's shoulder. Rising behind the brutish mass, the red mage plunged his rapier deep into the orc's back.

It emitted a low gurgle, before dropping to the ground. Following his movement, Fredik spun about, slashing the next attacker across the face. A spurt of dark blood spurted out as the beast screamed in agony, clawing at it's face.

"For San d'Oria!" He cried out. The temple knights at his back lifted their blades and roared! In an symphonic crash of metal upon metal, the knights atop their red and black steeds charged forward, trampling the orcs beneath them.

They didn't know what hit them.

And within the center of the raging battle in front of San d'Oria's gates was Fredik himself, dipping, tucking, weaving, slicing, and slashing the beasts about him.

"If we die, we take as many of them to the gates of Promyvion with us!" He roared, throwing one arm out to release a searing flame. Reaching its target, the ball of energy leaped upon the ranks of orcish archers amid the forest.

"Sir, there are two many of them, we should regroup behind the gates!" A knight cried out at Fredik's side amid the mass of chaos.

"If we back down now, they'll take the children. Bastok has sent us troops, we just need more time!" He called back, sending a shower of lightning on an opposing orc.

Suddenly the sound of a horn echoed across the acres of Ronfaure. The Iron Musketeers had arrived!

Zezerg, followed by two score knights crashed through the flanks of the orcs, sending them left right and sideways. The tides of the battle had turned.
