me and a girl i gave my promise ring to broke up about 6 months ago and i asked for my ring back.. does that make me a dick?

No it doesn't. If you broke up 6 months ago, that promise is done. If she hawked the ring, fuck it. Otherwise, move on.

When i broke up with my ex I gave him back the promise ring that he gave me. If it's a mutual breakup I wouldn't see a problem with asking for it back if it was a promise ring especially if it was something of sentimental value to you.

Well in my opinion, it depends. Are you asking for the ring back because you'd actually like it back? Or are you asking for it back just to be a dick so she can't have it? Seeing as it was a mutual breakup I'd have to agree with Stine, if you asked for it back tactfully and it wasn't a big ordeal then there shouldn't be a problem.

Nah. It represents a promise that was broken. Why would she want to keep it, other than to pawn it off herself? A lot of people ask for things back after a break up, and a lot of people give back things without being asked. Then there are those who insist you keep the things they gave you.

I am off the mind set that promise rings are like pre-engagement rings. You might not be at a point to get engaged (to young, lack of money, etc). With that being said I would say that the same rules of broken engagements apply here. If she left she should give the ring back probably when she broke things off (that is what I did when I broke of my engagement). On the other hand if you left her I think the accepted pratice is she keeps the ring kinda like a condolence/consolation prize. The way you talk it makes it sound like it was more her leaving. And no asking back for it doesn't make you a dick... she might think this and her friends might think that but you did what was proper as far as I'm concerned.

Oh and under any condition if it a ring that was passed down to you from another family member then you always have the right to get it back I think. Family items should stay in the family.

It was a promise that you would get married (although it's not an engagement ring, that's the idea). That promise didn't happen. It is your property, and not hers to keep just because she wants to. It becomes her gift when you get married and the promise becomes reality. Until that happens, you own the ring. She needs to give it back, especially if she wants nothing to do with you.

It's also not worth too much of your effort. Ask her for the ring back. If she's a bitch about it, tell her as much and then get on with your life. Lesson learned.

i want it back but i talked to her and shes all like well i still haev feelings for you and actualy said AND I QUOTE "i love you still" that made me just wana say bitch are you out yo mind your datin another guy. And i want it back cuz im gonna pawn it off or money, it was 100 Bucks i know thats not alot but i just want it back because i dont know if she is gonna pawn it off, and from what i heard.. she is

i agree its like in the movie the bronx tale when C is after that guy that owes him 20 bucks. the boss gave him some sage advice he asked if he like they guy when the answer was no, he said then let it go you got off cheap, he out of your life for ever. same applies here in my opinion.

ok well, here's what you do in this case:

- do you still harbor feelings for this girl?
- if you repeated what she said, then you don't have much else to stand on.

Just say "I still have feelings for you too, now can I have the ring back?"

That really sucks. :/ She wouldn't be dating another guy if she really cared. I'm not sure what to tell you to do. It sounds like she's just saying it so she can keep the ring. Yeah $100 isn't a lot but does she even wear the ring? I'm sure her current boyfriend wouldn't be too happy about her parading around with a ring that her ex gave her.

Oldest guilt trip in the book.

Clarify the timeline for this. Did you break up six months ago and only recently ask her to return the ring?

Either way, you gave it to her as a gift. It belongs to her now.
