Actually driving by one in Japan (not going to it because cons are just lame imo) I'd have to say that you're uh... wrong.

A lot of japanese cosplay looks better than American just because they CARE more and they're less fat and a lot of pre-made costumes are already available there.

If you read Gaijin Smash he has a good post about Japanese people laughing at American cos-play. Link post later if ya'll want it.

It also helps for the japanese that theyre more conscious of what they look like(to the point of narcissism perhaps?) so when they look stupid they know when to not show themselves in public.

I've been to several conventions and even tried cosplaying myself, making a good costume takes a shit ton of work and more money than you'd think. Like someone else mentioned, in Japan there are places where you can simply go buy a premade costume, but I've never seen a cosplay store in America. There are some sites where you can get premade accessories and weapons, but unless you scour ebay, there wasn't many good premade costumes to be found. Not to mention that if you simply bought your whole costume, you generally got looked down on for not making it yourself.

Anyway, those Japanese costumes shown were indeed amazing.
