Chapter 1

The first thought Dreslin had was “Why are my eyelids so heavy?” Then he became acutely aware of the massive pain in his side. He started to move his arm to cradle his pain only to find he could barely move his arms. After a moment his next effort was to try and open his weary eyes. As soon as they started to open he pushed them back closed. The blinding sun seemed determined to force its way into his eyes. Slowly the intense white faded to a soft orange as the light filtered through his eyelids. As the pain faded from the demanding light of the sun Dreslin noticed the sound of wind. Shortly thereafter he realized he was laying in what seemed like rocky dirt or sand. Suddenly his entire body felt as though it was engulfed in a blizzard. Every inch of him seemed to tingle and pulsate. Then it felt as though something from inside his chest was lifting towards the sky. Before he knew what was happening his entire body was off the ground. He tried to react only to find he could not move any of his limbs. As his body lifted further away from the ground the cold sensation grew less and less noticeable. When the tingling had all but disappeared he felt his body start to sink back towards the ground. The feeling in the middle of his chest slowly changed from a skyward pull to an imploding tightness. As his body sank lower and lower his legs began to drift into a standing position along with the rest of his body. Even with all of these happenings his mind seemed to grow clearer with each passing moment. The instant his feet touched solid ground his muscles tightened and responded to his thoughts, and his chest felt as though it was going to collapse into itself. After but a brief moment of being under his own control, Dreslin opened his watery eyes. After blinking a few times to focus his vision he noticed his massive axe in his hands and instinctively slung it unto his back. Suddenly he remembered everything; he had been ambushed by a goblin while running through Tahrongi Canyon. A fierce battle ensued and then his memory goes blank.

“The pain in your chest will go away really soon.” Came a very shrill voice from behind him. Dreslin spun around to see who was talking to him. At first he saw no one but then the voice came again from below. “You were attacked by a gobby-wobby.” Dreslin glance down to see a very small Tarutaru standing a few feet in front of him.

“Thank you.” Dreslin was able to say as he pulled his clenched fist to his chest in salute.

“Just be more careful-wareful.” The stranger replied.

“To whom do I owe my deepest thanks?” Dreslin asked as the small man started to bounce away.

After running a few steps the stranger turned around and replied. “My name is Sinapa-Horana.” And with a quick smile and a hop ran off into the distance. Dreslin focused once again on the pain in his chest. Every muscle was impossibly tight and the pain was just as intense. He clutched his hand tight to his forehead and let out a slight moan of pain. As the relentless sun beat down on him he fell to one knee. Hand still pressed to his head he remained motionless for several moments. Suddenly thinking how exposed he was he slowly raised to his feet. Glancing around for a safe place to rest he took notice of the great amount of wind that was blowing through the canyon today. After taking refuge in the bleached ribcage of some giant creature he collapsed to the ground. The pain in his chest seemed to fluctuate between a mild ache and a pain so intense he ground his teeth until he could taste blood. For several hours hey lay inside the pile of bones concentrating only on the pain that ravaged his entire body. The intense strain of fighting against the pain for so long left his muscles tired and useless. After the waves had become less awful he could barely move his legs or arms. When the weakness had finally subsided he stood slowly and tried to get his bearings.

“How long was I out for?” he thought to himself as he scanned in all directions trying to find the sun behind the high canyon walls. After spotting the sun and deciding it was, in fact, sinking he headed south in hopes of finding the Federation of Windurst.

Chapter 2

“Someone help!” Dreslin shouted as he ran for his life across a grass covered field. Close behind him was a small, oddly-shaped creature. With a large, white head and small, leaf-like arms. As Dreslin sprinted across a small arch bridge with his aggressor close behind an arrow shot skillfully and struck the creature in its chest. With a small moan the monster tipped forward and died.

“Hello therrre.” Said Dreslin’s newest savior.

“Thank you.” He managed to gasp out between breaths. The mithra smiled and nodded to him. “What was that thing?” Dreslin inquired.

“We call those mandragoras.” She gently replied, a smile still on her pretty face.

“It was so relentless…” Dreslin started. “It just kept throwing its body into me and I couldn’t swing my axe fast enough.”

“Yup.” She nodded again. “They’re pesky little buggerrrs.” Dreslin slumped over and rubbed his bruises left from the encounter. As he knelt tending to his wounds she stood silently and studied him. Out of the corner of his eye Dreslin noticed.

“Thank you again for your help.” Dreslin said as he stood up.

“Say therrre…” she started. Dreslin had begun to stare back at her ignoring his wounds. “Why are you all the way out here all alllone?”

“I am trying to find Windurst.” He replied, standing up straight. She glanced up at him with a coy look in her eye.

“Windurrrst you say?” she asked as she began to circle him.

“Yes. Do you know how to get there?” he said, frozen in place. She let out the slightest giggle and began to jog away. “Wait!” Dreslin shouted after her. She simply stopped and motioned for him to follow before starting away again. Dreslin let out a quiet sigh as he began to chase after her. After running a short distance Dreslin noticed a goblin prowling the banks of a peaceful river nearby. Remembering how vile a creature goblins are Dreslin reached for his axe. As he readied his axe he noticed the mithra had drawn her bow. To his amazement the arrow burst into flames the moment before she released it. As the flaming arrow struck the goblin it shrieked in pain. As the goblin patted its leather armor to put out the flames the mithra put away her bow and reached for her daggers. One dagger in each hand she rushed towards the wounded creature. With two quick blows the goblin slumped over dead. While securing his axe to his back Dreslin watched as she searched the goblin’s body. He slowly walked over to her as she placed a few gil in her pocket.

“He won’t bother you now.” She purred.

“How did you do that?” Dreslin asked in amazement. She just stared back at him with a puzzled look on her face. “That arrow…it was on fire…”

“Oh that.” She replied. “That’s just a little trick I learned.” And again she started to run away. Dreslin followed at a distance not knowing what her true intentions were. As he followed her, his glance occasionally wandered to the area around him. Nowhere did he see signs of a city in the distance. Everywhere he saw awkward looking creatures, yellow beasts with a dozen or more legs and no eyes. Giant bees and those awful mandragoras. Wading in the shallow river were hard shelled crabs and a familiar sight, pugils. Though these ones seemed to have shorter snouts and thicker bodies than the ones he fought outside of Sand’ Oria. And the most wondrous creatures he saw were the feather covered yagudo. He has heard tales of them but never seen anything quite so repugnant. They stood nearly as tall as he did which made him quite uneasy. As night fell Dreslin grew tired, as did his accomplice. When the pair stopped for a brief rest Dreslin took the opportunity to ask a few questions.

“So what do they call you?” Dreslin asked flatly.

“My name is Hrono Tomseli.” She answered. “Hrono.”

“Well, Hrono, how much longer until we reach Windurst?”

“It’s just past these mmmountains.” She replied. She was looking around nervously and seemed quite anxious to move. Dreslin stood up and began to look around trying to find why she was so nervous. He felt a slight tug on his sleeve and glanced over to see Hrono with a terrified look upon her face. He turned his focus to what she was looking at and he saw the object of her fear. What looked to be a Tarutaru child was running and screaming an awful scream. Close behind the terrified child was one of those awful yagudo. Without further hesitation Hrono dashed off in the direction of the poor youngster. Dreslin followed close behind her. When the pair was close to the awful yagudo Hrono stopped to place an arrow in her bow. Dreslin rushed past her reaching for his axe. Instinctively he let out a yell so fierce that the yagudo was drawn to him. As the horrid beast turned its attention to Dreslin he swung his mighty axe and hit the fiend right in the ribs. At almost the exact same moment Hrono’s arrow flew past narrowly missing its mark. The yagudo swung each of its mighty hands striking Dreslin one after the other. Dreslin grimaced in pain as the filthy claws tore at his flesh. As Dreslin reeled from the blows Hrono notched another arrow, this one sinking itself deep into the yagudo’s body. With the beast nearly dead Dreslin raised his axe above his head and with both hands brought it crashing down upon the yagudo’s skull. For a brief moment Dreslin stood motionless, his axe resting on the lifeless head of the yagudo. And then with a deep breath placed the axe back into its rightful place on his back. He glanced around for Hrono and saw her dashing off in the direction of the scared child.

“Wait!” He shouted after her. “I will come with you.”

“No.” she shouted in return. “He is too scared right now.” Dreslin started to respond to this but thought better than to argue with her.

“Well at least tell me where I can find Windurst.” He replied.

“Keep going south, you will come to a small archway, through that you will find the city.” She replied as she vanished over a small hill. With a small sigh Dreslin started off in the direction he had been instructed. Still he could not help but wonder if his trip was totally in vain…

Here is chapter 3...my apologies for it being so short but I did not want to bog it down with lots of useless things. Stay tuned for chapter 4 coming soon (gonna go write it right now)

Chapter 3

Blinking in the bright sunlight Dreslin soaks in his new surroundings. Not too far in front of him a galka bard lets out a mesmerizing, deep voice raised in song. To his left stood an important looking tarutaru next to a rather large green and yellow flag. Glancing back in the direction he had just came from, he sees a rather odd-looking sign. Turning around to see it a bit better he takes a step forward. As he looks at the sign he stumbles into yet another tarutaru. Both Dreslin and the tarutaru crash to the ground.

“Hey watch where you are going you jerk!” the tarutaru shouted angrily.

“I’m sorry.” apologized Dreslin as he dusted himself off.

“Don’t worry I am fine.” hinted the tarutaru as he stood up. Dreslin scoffed at how rude this little man was being. Gazing intently at the small sign that read Shiva’s Gate, Dreslin felt a slight slap on the back of his leg. With a quiet grunt Dreslin slowly turns to see the tarutaru motioning angrily at him. Amidst the movements the tarutaru was saying something but Dreslin could not understand his tiny voice. Crouching lower to be able to hear the small man Dreslin placed one hand on his knee. Barely able to make out what he was saying Dreslin’s eyes began to wander. Suddenly Dreslin felt a small hand smack him across the face. Outraged, Dreslin stood and began to advance on the tarutaru. Much to his surprise the small man did not budge. The moment before Dreslin drew his axe an important looking mithra stood between the two adversaries.

“Therrre’s no need for that.” She stated. Dreslin started to respond but was silenced by the look on her face. After staring off Dreslin she bent down and did the same to the tarutaru. As the tarutaru stormed off, still talking to himself, she stood once again and faced Dreslin.

“Who do you…” Dreslin started but was again silenced by her expression.

“Therrre is no need to cause trouble. Understand?” she asked. Dreslin simply responded with a tight-lipped nod. As she slowly walked away Dreslin was left to lament the first impression he had made on the city he hoped to soon call home. Needing to blow off some steam Dreslin returned to the area surrounding the city. He spent the next several hours hunting tiny versions of mandragoras and innocent looking bumblebees. The entire time asking himself if he had made the correct decision that day so long ago…

good stuff man! keep it comin^^

THESE are the kinds of stories I like reading. You're doing an awesome job, Heart. Keep it up.
I'm writing a story too, but I dunno if Traveller's Tavern would accept a non-FFXI story, even if it is fantasy and has the basic elements of the game. I mean, I started the fine copies of my story after I played FFXI for like a year and a half, so it's actually got a lot of similarities.

Great job, i really liked reading those ^^, keep um coming

Nice nice. Looking forward for more work. I'm going to read it when it's all done. You don't mind if a pring a copy do you?
