Angry Iraqi throws shoes at Bush in Baghdad

Apparently this reporter was taken by US troops once and held without charge and then released when he hadn't done anything.

Now all locking him up will do is give him some kind of martyrdom, and make him a symbol. The Arabic news is praising him, and people are protesting in the streets.

Making an example out of him with some heavy handed sentence will do nothing to help.

He was kidnapped by insurgents before that.

Be glad he didn't. Nothing makes you look more like a major league asshole than playing the role of a feudal lord talking down to a lowly vassal.

Or maybe reminding him what exacting his political will and the result of lots of American blood and money gave the ungrateful bastard.

And a few years in jail doesn't even begin to compare to the torture-to-death he would have received if he tried that shit with Saddam.

We're a progressive nation. We don't torture people to death. We just stop at insanity.

If Bush had any class, he'd ask them to let the guy go.

OK... We created Saddam. Just like almost every other foreign relations nightmare in the Middle East - America funds these pricks when it achieves convenient goals for us but when they turn around and later bite the hand that fed them - having grown to love the power and money and stature - suddenly they're a problem. When they can't be controlled or manipulated anymore, or when they won't do our bidding anymore, they must be put down. http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82/press.htm

Don't misunderstand me - Saddam Hussein was a brutal, soul-sucking monster who deserved to die in my opinion. But let's not act like Bush isn't equally a monster to those people. They suffered a lot for a long time at Hussein's hands largely due to the support from our government that helped him grow in power, and then their country gets war-torn to "avenge daddy." Was getting Saddam out of power a good thing? Absolutely. Do those people have a right to be pissed at Bush and the American government regardless? Fucking A they do.

People keep talking about how throwing shoes is a sign of disrespect in Iraq, trying to add more in depth to a pretty shallow event. I want to visit the place where throwing your shoe at someone is a sign of love.

The dodge was pretty bad ass, gotta give Bush that. As for Hand Job, or Odd Job, or whatever the guy's name is, let him get a little punishment - it's not like if I threw a shoe at Nouri al Maliki'(god knows anyone with a name so silly deserves it) they'd just let me go. I doubt he'll get 7 years. He'll get like a year, and he'll get out, write a book, make millions, bang a bunch of those chicks with the towels on their head.
