It's like a Yoshitoshi Abe title, you need to put yourself past a part of the series.
I found it a really good series with a plot that made me go "Wow!" and that doesn't happen very often anymore with anime.
Then again I am a whee bit older than when I started with Anime so my taste has changed considerably.

Other recomendations:
- Canaan
- Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East)
- Tytania (Space opera, personal taste though, I know enough people that didn't like it at all.)
- Cat Shit One (No.. Really!! As far as I know only one ep has been released so far, but it is a brilliant one.)
- Ghost in the Shell series
- Record of Lodoss Wars (Another personal favorite, Fantasy genre)
- Seikai series (Crest/Banner of the stars)

I would strongly advise the following
Code Geass (Death Note with Mech)
Gurren Laggan (The last good Gainax anime. Sorry Panty/Stocking lovers.)
Shojo Kakumei Utena (Evangelion Mind-Fuck with a dash of Bishonens and a truck load of roses.) *a favorite*
Kurokami (Was told to watch this recently.)
Fushigi Yuugi (If you can stand a 1/5 women vs men ratio.)
When They Cry (Myrhh advised this one to me. Haven't watched it yet.)
Ghost Stories (Dubbed, and only if you have a good sense of humor. One of ADV's last gems.)

Ergo Proxy - Psychological Thriller/Mystery
Witch Hunter Robin
Baccano (already stated, Thirded)
Jyu-Oh-Sei: Planet Of The Beast King
Claymore
Madlax
Black Lagoon
Wolf's Rain
Utawaremono

I own all of these and think of them as some of my favorite series that don't have tons of mechs in them.

And since you mentioned you like supernatural mystery/thrillers I suggest: Ghost Hunters. It's a decent series, I enjoyed most of it and it plays off of real life types of hauntings while adding the more fictional haunting style in as well. I kinda wish there was more to it, but it is what it is.

For a more Fantasy/Supernatural adventure watch: Shakugan No Shana. I really enjoyed this one, fits up there with my favorites.

-Canaan i already saw it , its was ok

- Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East) : i didn't really like this one ;/

- Cat Shit One : sorry but i will not watch this one

- Gurren Laggan : i know this and to tell the true, i'm not really into robots

You don't have to like robots to like Gurren Laggan. XD

I may collect gundam model kits, but I'm not a big mech geek either. (Men have a need to put stuff together..)

Me either, not one bit. However, this show is not one for the mecha genre in my opinion. It has its own genre: Pure Awesome. Also, I highly recommend Ergo Proxy, as Ecks mentioned. It's extremely smart and quirky. The only problem is the main character is a whiny twit, though it actually is necessary to the cause. As far as pure Sci-fi anime goes, I have yet to find an anime that touches it. It ends up being like Ghost in the Shell, too smart to continue, which is a shame, but it leaves things just exactly how they should be.

I forgot where you are from, that was rude of me my apologies.
This is one we better skip.

I'll replace that one with: Freedom Project
From the creator of Akira

Ghibli is a class on its own, but what have you seen so far from Ghibli because they have a lot to offer.
