Last night in Yhaotor Jungle, my party and I were doing very well. As always, right when things start getting really good, people have to leave. So we pick up to new people, one being Beng, A Drk. I told him he was my SATA partner and he gave me no repsonse. After 1 min or longer he sent me a /tell with ???. So I figured he was JP and knew what he had to do. So I pull a Mandy and he does not voke. my PLD vokes and we go on our way XPing. So I could not get SATA off very often and when I tried to SATA to him, he would move to the side. Note I would not SATA to him until the mob was more than half dead and the pld had a significant amount of hate. Well about an hour into him.her being in my PT he send "sorry got to go" "goodbye" and disbands. So I am like WTF. and I /slap him. Oh well. 10 mins later he was in another PT. Even though I was glad he was gone, he was such an ignorant fool, and played incorrectly, and made XPing difficult. I wanted to boot him, but I tend to be a very nice person. And I would feel bad. Now I wish I would have kicked him out ; ;
WHOOPS! Obviously I wasn't there - so I'm only going on what you reported. But just on what you reported, I don't think this was entirely his fault. In fact, if anything, it was more your fault.
This isn't a personal attack, so please don't take it that way, but consider things from the other point of view... (bear me out here).
You used a job-specific ackronym that not everyone should necessarily be expected to know.
Anyone who's played THF or at least with a lot of THFs, would know it's Sneak-Attack/ Trick-Attack. But I remember being confused the first time I saw people tossing the term carelessly about as though everyone just knew what it meant -- I was just bold enough to ask (and someone answered).
Actually I'd been people's SATA partner long *before* I knew the term "SATA".
I realize that you think this other person must be a poor player for not knowing, but hey, there has to be a first time for everyone.
As a mature player you recognize that there are noobs who don't "get it". But if you're REALLY a mature player, you'll ALSO realize that there are cool players who WOULD get it, if ONLY someone would take the time to explain it to them nicely. It's just human nature that when ackronyms are tossed about in a clickish environment (and the whole game is effectively a click) that nobody wants to look stupid by admiting they don't know what you're talking about. Be prepared for that and make the offer to explain it to them (in a nice way) if you start to get the idea that they probably don't know what you want/mean.
The reason I say it's not his fault is because you said he gave you a private "/tell" with a ??? in it. That should have been your clue that (a) the fact that it was in a private tell meant he was a little embarrassed to admit to the group that he didn't know what you wanted, but at least he was bold enough to ask you privately -- at least give him credit for that. You, on the other hand, made some pretty large assumptions that he just didn't speak english and would completely understand what you meant as soon as you started doing it (a leap on your part). How did you come to that conclusion? Did you /sea <playername> on him and see if his language comes up with a "J" in the column and no "E"? Yet, when it didn't work out, you're blaming him instead of considering that things might have turned out much better for both of you had you not made so many assumptions.
I have partied with people who I thought were complete noobs -- and later on turned out to be really cool players. We all had a day when we didn't know what SATA meant.
I was really lucky to have someone take me in when I was new to the game and explained a ton to help me through, then got me into an LS that was equally cool. I've still recall the first time I played with a Ninja and just didn't get it. Finally the guy says "ok, do you know what Utsusemi is?" and I replied "no. I don't". He explained it to me. I admit that even AFTER he explained it to me I probably didn't do very well recognizing when we had to trade hate back and forth (he could have had some better macros to make that clear), but it's just an example of someone with a job specific skill that really only works well if ANOTHER player, who doesn't have the same job and might not know the skill, works WITH you in order to make it work well.
